Starting Your Business in Australia 101

People all around the world look for opportunities by moving abroad and starting a business in another country. This happens for a number of reasons, but it’s usually because people are looking for an economic benefit they can’t achieve in their own countries of origin. One of the countries that provides some of the best business opportunities in the world is most definitely Australia. This article aims to serve as a short guide on how to start a business in the Land Down Under.

As we all know, Australia was basically founded by successful migrants who’ve come from all over the world in a search for a new life. Some of them managed to create multimillion-dollar businesses and gain world fame during that process. So, if you were looking for a place to start your new business, far away from home, here is how you should approach it in Australia.

Things to consider beforehand.

It’s true that Australia has a lot to offer to all striving businesses, but there are some things you have to keep in mind before you simply book a plane ticket and start packing. First of all, you must make sure you have all of the necessary visas for your specific purposes. You also have to make sure you follow all the relevant laws and regulations tied to your specific business branch. Another important thing to keep in mind is insurance, so don’t forget about insurance for your business and your assets, and do your homework. There are loads of amazing companies that provide you with exactly the services you need, you just have to do some researching on your own.

Some of the most relevant visas you might need are as follows: the Business Talent visa (permanent, subclass 132), the Business Innovation and Investment visa (provisional, subclass 188), the Business Innovation and Investment visa (permanent, subclass 888). There are other visas that might suit your needs better, so make sure you contact the Department of Immigration and Border Protection or visit the nearest Australian embassy or consulate to learn more.

Choosing the right business structure.

When you have developed your business plan, you will get to decide what type of business structure would suit you the best. There are a few common business structure types used in Australia, so take them all into consideration.

The simplest and the most affordable business structure you can choose in Australia is to operate as a sole trader. What this business structure allows you is to solely control and manage your business. You are considered the sole trader, but you still can employ other people. The second most common business structure used in Australia is registering a company. This process isn’t that easy, but if your business needs a company structure to become successful, you will have to contact the Australian Government. Some other options you might go for are a limited partnership, a trust business structure, and a co-operative structure. All of these business structures have their own advantages and disadvantages, and there are different laws and regulations following them, so make sure you do a thorough research.

Market researching.

Starting a business in a completely different country might be a bit challenging, especially if you don’t know exactly what to do, or who to consult. However, even if you don’t have prior experience with starting or running a business abroad, there are some things you can do on your own. One of those things is market research.

If you want to start a successful business, you must fully understand what the new market has to offer. Luckily, in this age of the internet, market research isn’t that hard. You should make sure you’ve contacted as many relevant people you know, and take detailed notes. Talk to your family, friends, associates, but also try to find people from Australia to talk to. Use networking to your advantage. Consider coming to Australia and focusing on a related part-time job. It will give you quite a useful insight into how things work, and how you can use them to help your business grow.

Developing business premises.

Let’s say that you’ve followed all of the previous steps, and now, you have reached the point where you simply need to start developing an Australian home for your new business. As with any building development in the world, there are some laws, rules, and regulations you will have to follow.

One of the easiest ways to deal with this challenge is to find experts to help you buy investment property in Sydney. With the proper help, you can easily achieve almost everything you’ve dreamed of. How? Well, professionals can help you understand everything that you might need for business development. They will help you with acquiring all the necessary certificates like a zoning, construction, compliance, occupation, and other certificates. They can also help you understand all of the necessary things you might have to apply for, like, for example, making changes to a heritage listed place. Having your own business premises is a giant step towards the success of your business, so you must ensure everything is done absolutely by the book. It requires quite a bit of time, effort, and even resources, but it can pay off quite significantly in the long run.

Wrapping it up.

As you can see, when you’re thinking about starting your own business in Australia, not unlike in many other countries, you have to follow various rules to get what you want. However, even though this might require quite a lot of your dedication, having a business in a well-developed country like Australia can really have an unexpectedly positive effect on your business. Do your research, don’t be afraid to talk to people, and you could soon be sitting in your own CEO office, overlooking Sydney, and enjoying the fruits of your labor.
