Getting Residency In Antigua and Barbuda

In this article, I will look at how to get residency in Antigua and Barbuda. This second passport and second residency program is one of the most popular in the Caribbean. Here’s everything you need to know about getting residency in Antigua and Barbuda.

Seeing the great reception I have been getting from my citizenship by investment articles I can see that there is a lot of interest on how to get a citizenship, residency, or second passport from another country. Anyone considering a second residency in the Caribbean should definitely give Antigua and Barbuda a look!

The government of Antigua and Barbuda, like many other jurisdictions in the caribbean, has welcomed foreign investment with open arms and has facilitated the entrance to the country to any one who wishes to make a substantial investment. Antigua and Barbuda has cut the red tape in an effort to attract high net worth investors to their residency program.

There are several different paths to residency in Antigua and Barbuda. Some of these routes also lead to citizenship and a second passport.

The lowest cost path to becoming a resident of Antigua and Barbuda is by living on the island for at least 4 consecutive years. Of course, in practice, this is rather rare… most get residency through investment.

The common ways to get residency in Antigua and Barbuda are: being a student in the island for 4 years, having made a substantial investment, being a government employee, or getting married to a citizen or resident of Antigua and Barbados.

Along with the application associated with any of these methods to obtain residency you must prove that you entered the country of Antigua and Barbuda legally and that you have no criminal records. A background check is enough to clear the last part.  

The following are some of the requirements that you must file to apply:

  • Payment of the necessary fees
  • Police certificate of character from Antigua and Barbuda
  • Proof of residence of the place where the applicant has resided for over six months
  • Health certificate
  • Letter from Statutory Boards to show that you have paid the necessary taxes
  • Copy of of the applicant’s passport
  • Birth and/or marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Any other documents that the Chief Immigration Officer that might help your case

Depending on your situation you will have to present any additional documentation that will advance your case. This is the traditional route to obtain residency in the country, it takes at least 4 years not including the bureaucratic process, but there is another way to speed this up.

As I mentioned before, the fastest way to obtain residency, a second passport, and citizenship in a foreign jurisdiction is to make an investment. Antigua and Barbuda is no different as it offers a very practical citizenship by investment program.

In order to qualify for the citizenship by investment program in Antigua and Barbuda you must make an invest in any of this ways:

  • Contribute $100,000 to the Antigua National Development Fund
  • Invest $1.5m in establishing a business
  • Invest $400,000 in a government approved real estate project

Every one of this methods needs a different application form and needs to meet different requirements in order to be approved. In any of this cases you can include your dependents, but you have to provide proof that you can maintain them financially.

Another great program offered by Antigua and Barbuda is the tax residency program. If you are approved you can become a permanent residency of the island. The requirements for this program are:

  • Have a home in Antigua and Barbuda, rent or owned
  • Visit Antigua and Barbuda at least 30 days a year
  • Have an annual income that exceeds $100,000 dollars
  • Pay an annual tax of $20,000 dollars
