Active Retirement in Denmark

If you like to spend time in the fresh air and enjoy activities like bicycling or walking, Denmark is the perfect place for you.

The Danes love their bicycles and it shows through their wide network of cycle routes throughout the country. You can choose between long distance national routes, regional cycle routes and local cycle routes which are very clearly marked and maps are available for most of them so you can plan your next tour from the commodity of your home.

There are special cycle paths throughout the country and you have as many rights and obligations riding a bicycle as you have riding a car.

If you prefer hiking there are numerous hiking routes throughout the country. The Nature Agency produces information leaflets containing maps and descriptions of all public nature areas in Denmark which are available for free at local tourist office as well as trail maps for a number of private forest and wilderness areas, produced by the Danish Forest Association.

If you like to bring fresh fish home that you caught yourself Denmark is the perfect country for you with its extensive coastline for sea and deep sea fishing, as well as many freshwater rivers, streams and lakes. Fishing is possible year-round, from angling in the long summer evenings to ice-fishing in the winter. If you are over 65 years of age you don’t need a fishing license. Anglers are obliged to seek information on any fishing restrictions and close seasons.

There are more than 200 great golf courses to be found evenly distributed throughout the country. Guest players are welcome on most courses in Denmark, with payment of a green fee. Clubs have different prices and accessibility, so it’s a good idea to contact the course before you go, especially if you are a disabled player. You can pretty much play all year round in Denmark, depending on the snow. That means that winter greens are common between November and April.

In Denmark you’re never more than 50km from the coast, which means there are plenty of great opportunities to do water sports like diving, surfing or kayaking there’s something for you. You can paddle your own kayak through Copenhagen, learn Stand Up Paddling, take a trip in a canoe down Lindenborg Å or try out windsurfing or kitesurfing, you are never too old to learn something new.

If you prefer to get to know your new country by car the best way to do so is to follow the marguerite route. It is the most picturesque route in Denmark and you only have to follow the signs by the roadside to stop by the best attractions Denmark has to offer. The Margueritrute is a 3,500 km tourist route which passes through the Danish landscape in Jutland, Fyn and Zealand. The long route is characterized by the small Marguerite-signs in the road side. It is named the marguerite route, because the marguerite is Queen Margrethe’s favorite flower.

There are almost 60 zoos, animal parks and aquariums in different cities of Denmark which will make for a nice weekend excursion. Or if you like parks, why not visit the Botanic Garden of Copenhagen or the oldest royal garden, King’s Gardens next to Rosenborg Castle. And if you want to take out your grandchildren to have some fun in your new home country there are many amusement parks, circuses and events to choose from.
