A Few Things That You Need to Know About Working in Australia

Whether or not you’ve only seen glimpses of Australia from the movies, there’s no denying that that place has an alluring charm that draws many people to travel to it at least once in their lives. You may want to take a short and leisurely trip there to take in the sights and sounds, or may even be planning to move there for a longer period of time in order to get some work done. Whatever the case, moving to a new location will always come with its own rules, some of them obvious and some of them not quite as clear-cut. In this article, we’ll discuss a few important pieces of advice that you should keep in mind in order to make your professional experience in this new continent a hassle-free and pleasant one:

You Will Have to Get Yourself a Tax File Number (TFN)

According to an article on RTW Backpackers, you can’t start working in Australia unless you register for a TFN regardless of whether you are already a citizen of the country or are just passing by for an extended visit. Though legally you are not exactly required to get one, it’ll make several processes for you so much easier, such as when you have to start applying for a taxback. It will also ensure that you will only be taxed with an appropriate amount, which is quite minimal compared to that which regular citizens would have to pay.

Though you can apply online for a TFN at the official site of the Australian Taxation Office, you first have to officially arrive in the country before you can start filling anything out. Also, keep in mind that you will be asked to give them a specific address where they will send you your essential documents. Whether you are reserving a room at an establishment such as a hotel or sleeping over at a good friend’s house, make sure to inform the people who are always staying there to expect something with your name on it to arrive sometime soon. This ensures that your important papers do not mysteriously disappear.

You May Want to Consider Taking on Remote Positions

If you do not exactly envision yourself staying at a specific company for a very long period of time, or you just do not want to have to deal with the hassle of commuting or driving from your temporary residence to your assigned office, then you may want to consider taking on jobs that can allow you to work from home or from any other location. These types of jobs are growing in popularity, and you can take on many different kinds of positions that are tailored so as to take advantage of your specific skillset and experience. You can choose from a variety of industries. Some possible jobs you can take on include becoming an accountant, a project manager, a writer, or even a technical support worker.

According to an article by Laura Shin on Forbes, several studies show that telecommuting job positions are rising in popularity, increasing by nearly 80 percent in 2012 compared to seven years before that, and the number of remote workers is only growing even bigger as the years go by. While most jobs require you to at least have access to your own personal e-mail account, some positions require you to use specific software, such as instant messengers and even online meeting tools. If you are planning to take on a tech-related type of job, you may want to look into good quality cameras for video conferencing for IT purposes and explore popular communication platforms such as Blue Jeans.

Quick Tip: Opening a Local Bank Account May Make Things Easier

Planning to stay in the area for at least a year or two? You may want to open up an Australian bank account to make your finances much easier to handle. By doing this, you will be able to avoid having to pay for additional fees due to mandatory bank transfer policies for foreigners. Plus, you will have an easier time depositing and withdrawing your well-earned cash.

Time to Get Started

Now that you have a better picture of what to expect when you try to launch a career in Australia, you should be equipped with the right knowledge and expectations once you finally arrive in the continent. Remember that working in a new location means that you will be subject to different rules, so do not go around expecting things to function exactly the same way as they did back home. Once you have managed to adjust and adapt to your new location, whether temporary or permanent, you will be able to take on any job with a clearer vision of where you want to be in the long run.
