Women, Wellness, and the New Escape

Adventure travel is no longer just about the thrill—it’s about empowerment, connection, and inclusivity. A growing wave of female travelers is reshaping the industry, driving demand for women-led expeditions, safety-conscious itineraries, and experiences that foster community and self-discovery, according to a newly released report from the ATDI.

Alongside this shift, fitness-based tourism is booming, with travelers seeking more than just sightseeing—opting instead for workout retreats, immersive wellness journeys, and active escapes that blend movement with exploration. From the peaks of Patagonia to yoga sanctuaries in Bali, the modern traveler isn’t just chasing destinations—they’re chasing transformation.

Women are redefining adventure and wellness travel.

Nomad’s New Frontier

South Korea’s Jeju Island has launched the “Jeju Style” digital nomad visa, designed to attract remote workers seeking a unique work-life balance. This initiative provides long-term stay options in one of Asia’s most scenic locations, positioning Jeju as a prime destination for global digital nomads. Jeju Island, where volcanic landscapes meet digital-age ambition, is rapidly evolving from a serene getaway into Asia’s premier hub for remote work and innovation.

The Gulf’s Growing Pay Gap

As the UAE continues to draw expatriates seeking opportunity and lifestyle perks, a growing paradox is emerging—more jobs, but fewer financial incentives. Despite ongoing economic expansion and workforce growth, a new report highlights a troubling trend: salary competitiveness is slipping in 2025.

Companies, tightening budgets amid shifting market conditions, are making pay raises harder to come by. For expats accustomed to the Gulf’s once-lucrative packages, the region’s evolving economic landscape signals a recalibration of expectations in an era where opportunity no longer guarantees prosperity.

Dubai, the UAE’s melting point, is home to over 3.5 million expats.

A Blessing or a Burden?

Last week it was announced that Spain welcomed a record-breaking 94 million international tourists in 2024, cementing its status as a top global destination with visitor numbers predicted to rise by 9% in 2025. However, the surge has led to housing shortages and increased living costs, this month prompting cities like Málaga and Barcelona to implement stricter regulations on short-term rentals and introduce new measures to protect local communities.

Thailand’s Tax Shift

Expats residing in Thailand for more than 180 days will now be required to report and pay taxes on their global income, leading many to rethink their plans. As some expats prepare to leave, the government has also announced a citizenship program for over 483,000 long-term stateless residents from Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos—though Western retirees remain excluded from the initiative.

New Realities in Europe

Germany is set to increase its minimum wage and raise housing benefits by 15% in 2025, making it a more appealing destination for expats on lower incomes.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands is rolling out changes to its tax policies, including adjustments to the 30% ruling for highly skilled migrants, impacting financial planning for expats working in the country.

Beyond the Pages: Must-Read New Releases

This week’s literary lineup brings a mix of introspection, adventure, and cultural exploration. Pico Iyer’s Aflame: Learning from Silence offers a deeply personal meditation on solitude and spirituality, drawing from his time at a Benedictine hermitage in Big Sur.

Meanwhile, Rick Steves takes readers on a nostalgic journey with On the Hippie Trail: Istanbul to Kathmandu, revisiting his early travels and the experiences that shaped his career as a world-renowned travel writer. Whether you’re in search of quiet reflection or a window into the golden age of backpacking, these new releases promise to inspire and transport.
