5 Things You Need to Know Before Moving to Switzerland

For the past five years, Switzerland has ranked as the best place in the world to work and live. It makes sense for multiple reasons. The country is not only beautiful but has a rich history, blends four cultures, and many excellent opportunities to grow your career. It sounds like the perfect place for anyone.

With that said, however, no matter where you move, it’s always helpful to be prepared. There are a few things you should be aware of to make sure you’re ready for a seamless Swiss transition.

1) Switzerland is Expensive

Zurich and other Swiss cities have consistently ranked as among the most expensive cities. The average cost of a one-bedroom flat in the city is now above 2000 Euros or 2165 Swiss Francs. That’s another thing to pay attention to—Switzerland is not a member of the Eurozone, so you’ll have to keep that in mind during any salary negotiations.

However, there is good news. While rent may be on the high side, there are plenty of ways to live frugally and happily in Switzerland.

First, you may want to consider moving any of your belongings into the country or purchasing them in nearby Germany, where things are generally cheaper. You’ll save a ton. Then, do as the locals do, and you’ll find other great ways to save. After a while, you’ll be able to find a ton of ways to make it as affordable as back home.

2) There are Four National Languages

Switzerland isn’t a nation in the same way as France, Germany, or Italy. In fact, it’s actually composed of different cantons, each with high levels of autonomy. Though you may have heard that Bern is the country’s capital, that’s not true. It’s only the seat of some of the federal government which is spread around the country.

As a result, Switzerland has four national languages—French, German, Italian, and Romansh. If you have to choose one, over 60% of the country does speak German, so that might be your best bet. However, all four languages can be beneficial.

Fortunately, there is also a very high level of English competency, so you should be able to get by for at least a while with that. But you’ll eventually want to start learning the main language of wherever it is you decided to settle in Switzerland.

3. Cybercrime is Rising Fast in Switzerland

While Switzerland is a very safe country to live, unfortunately, cybercrime is starting to grow out of control there. There are many reasons for this, including a large number of financial institutions and other attractive targets for criminals.

But hackers just as often attack regular people as they do major institutions. For that reason, you need to get serious about digital security and start thinking about a cybersecurity strategy.

Start using a VPN to protect your internet connection and privacy and invest in other cybersecurity tools. The benefit here is that these will keep you safe online no matter where you travel or live. Do yourself a favor and get all of this set up before your move in. It’s better safe than sorry!

4. Time to Love the Mountains

Switzerland is one of the most mountainous places on earth. Situated cozily in the Alps, you’ll never be far from one.

This makes the country ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Of course, everybody thinks about skiing and snowboarding in the Alps. But summer activities like hiking, fishing, kayaking, and others in the beautiful meadows are just as rewarding.

Again, this is another area where you’ll really benefit from having a few local friends. Swiss culture was born in the mountains, and you can enjoy traditional festivals, holidays, and so many other amazing activities there.

5. You Won’t Need a Car

Switzerland has an absolutely fantastic transit system. Even outside of the major cities, it’s very easy to get around by train and bus.

This means you can skip the expensive and complicated registration process and travel to every part of the country—and even the rest of Europe with ease.

Switzerland is perfectly located to make weekends in Italy, Germany, France, and other countries as easy as 1-2-3.

Moving to Switzerland Made Easy

Switzerland is truly a lovely country. Whether you’ve landed a job there, are going to school, or just taking up temporary residence thanks to the Schengen Visa, it’s truly wonderful.

Make the most out of your move, and follow these tips to have the best experience possible.
