We all love to travel, right? The world has so many beautiful places to explore, such as warm-weather paradises like the Philippines, Malaysia, Madagascar, Maldives, and others. However, some people are looking for an adventure a little off the beaten path.
The truly bold could visit the North Pole, Alaska, Antarctica, or Spitsbergen. Polar bears, sperm whales, penguins, and floating icebergs can be at your fingertips. For most tourists, spending a vacation in ice-cold locations isn’t ideal – but for some, it is exhilarating.
The northern part of Norway is one of these magical places that keeps rising on my bucket list, especially during wintertime.
But why northern Norway? What makes this place so unique during the winter?
You should know that northern Norway isn’t just an ordinary place, it’s something quite special. You cannot underestimate how awesome northern Norway is, especially if you are new to experiencing winter wonderlands.
Without further ado, here are the reasons why you should book your next flight to northern Norway during this winter season.
1 – The Northern Lights
One of the reasons that I want to come to northern Norway is none other than the Northern Lights. It is one of my dreams to see the Northern Lights for real, not just on television and photographs.
The Northern Lights are one of the highlights of the cold world of northern Norway. It would be great for you to see them at night when you check in at the Holmen Husky Lodge, where you can stay in a tent-like room. You may also see its incredible view in Tromso and Alta, especially if it’s a blizzardy type of night.
2 – Hotel Made of Ice
Even for the well-traveled, this experience will amaze anyone. I know that there are several hotels you can find that are cozy, comfortable, and elegant. What about one made entirely from ice?
The Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel is one of the famous ice hotels in northern Norway. It is located in Alta, where the entire bar, walls, and beds are made of snow and ice. Usually, it takes them six weeks to assemble everything before Christmas Day. Much to my surprise, it remains open until mid-April when it completely melts.
3 – Arctic Cruising
If you are familiar with cruising, you might not want to miss this. In other countries, you can ride a big cruise ship to travel from country to country. On a cruise, it’s like you’re living in a mobile entertainment town. However, cruising in the Arctic is a different kind of experience.
You can find some of the best Arctic cruises and enjoy exploring the cold world as you’ve never seen it before. You will see various snowy landscapes that are fantastic and unforgettable.
4 – Dogsledding
One of the reasons that I would like to explore Northern Norway during winter is to experience dogsledding. In Alta, they’ve held annual dog sledding competitions, which create a lot of fun and excitement for the audience.
Although dogsledding is quite fun, it’s hard for you at the start. It requires control of the dogs who are carrying you to your desired destination. The good news is that you don’t need to drive, because there are experienced drivers who will give you a ride instead. The Holmen Husky Lodge and Tromsø are some of the best places for you to try dogsledding.
5 – Snowmobiling
I have never tried snowmobiling, but I’ve always wanted to. Here in northern Norway, you have the opportunity to do this with proper guidance from the tour guide or expert.
Although it won’t be easy, it’s going to be a lot of fun learning how to drive the vehicle. For experienced snowmobilers, the snowy trails of Alta and Tromsø may be just the dose of excitement you’re looking for.
