Get to Know the Companies that Let You Make Your Own Job

I know it sounds illusory: Being in charge of only the things you like doing, making your own schedule, or working from a beach house during summer months sounds like your typical 9-to-5 employee’s make-believe job. However, many companies understand that success and prosperity are strongly related to their employees’ happiness and well-being.

Here are some of the most flexible companies around the world:

LivingSocial

Located in: Sydney, Australia and Washington, DC

LivingSocial is an online marketplace that encourages its employees to find a work style that they are comfortable with. This means working from home, a park, or a mountain top cabin – as long as you have a reliable internet connection, anything goes.

LivingSocial employees regularly travel the globe for work, extending their time in cities that appeal to them. Another perk of working at LivingSocial is being valued for your abilities and initiative. Ideas for new strategies, activities, or partnerships are encouraged and will not go unnoticed. The company is pervious about each employee’s responsibilities, offering diversity and adaptability.

Rocket Games

Located in: Wymondham, United Kingdom

The work environment at Rocket Games is laid back and goal-driven. They focus on results and creativity without looking at the hours an employee spends at their desk or logs into their system. There is no set vacation policy and no maximum number of sick days; an employee can spend 5 hours per day working as long as objectives are met.

Working at Rocket Games is rewarding. Regular meetings in which employees freely discuss their challenges, likes, and dislikes are taken into account to create a positive working environment where productivity derives from happiness.

Urban Airship

Located in: U.S.A. (California and Oregon), Norway (Oslo), and Alkmaar, Netherlands

Another tech company that makes use of the internet to keep its employees happy, Urban Airship helps brands approach their mobile users. For a passionate mobile developer, working at Urban Airship can be a dream come true: Free time, a flexible work environment, and unlimited vacation policies make the ideal work-life balance.

Being passionate and good at your job doesn’t have to mean leaving the office at 8 PM, and Urban Airship is a clear example. The company also encourages its employees to travel, and they offer the possibility of relocating to offices in other countries for cultural exchanges and self-development.

Upwork

Located in: San Francisco, CA and Oslo, Norway

The great idea behind Upwork is to directly connect freelance talents with casting personnel. Office hours are flexible as long as goals and critical deadlines are met. Wednesday, the middle of the workweek, is the day everyone replenishes their energy and works remotely. However, any other days that a team member feels more productive working remotely, they are encouraged to do so.

But Upwork doesn’t only believe in connecting and communicating when talking about their product, they also strongly believe that people can be brilliant in fields that they never thought about before. This is why constant feedback from the employee regarding their tasks is taken seriously to determine which activity suits them best.

Finding the right career or the perfect place to live can be a challenge, but it pays off. Long, dreadful workdays are replaced by time spent doing what you love. In a world where information is at our fingertips, only curiosity, initiative, and consistency are needed to find your ideal career.
