The plantain is a very popular food in Panama. It looks like a banana, but if you take a bite of a raw plantain you will know this is something different. Plantains are a member of the banana family and look very similar.

Panamanians love their golden frogs. Their status as a cultural icon dates all the way back to the Mayans who believed they could increase fertility. Their brilliant yellow color eventually gave rise to a myth that upon death, they would transform into actual gold. Frog-shaped talismans called huacas are still considered symbols of good fortune, and replicas are commonly found in Panamanian jewelry stores. Golden frogs are used to promote hotels and restaurants and have even been used on Panama’s lottery tickets. Small, golden, and lucky – hence La Rana Dorada, the perfect name for master brewer Brad Kraus’ microbrewery enterprise in Panama.

No worries when it comes to keeping warm: Fresh powdery snow, a crackling fire at the lodge, bundling up against the cold……if this is your idea of heaven, then Panama may not be the place for you!

I was recently given a tour of the upscale gated community of Altos del Maria by a Panamanian friend and knowledgeable attorney. It took us about an hour, heading west, to reach the turn-off at the Pan-American Highway from Panama City, then another 30 minutes up the road to the subdivision. It is a beautiful drive with breathtaking views on a well maintained road.
