This week’s World News Roundup moves between structural inequality and unexpected innovation. A new UN report warns that the gap between rich and poor nations is widening, even as global growth continues. In aviation, a radical rethink of economy travel takes shape, while in Honduras, a rare wildlife sighting offers a moment of hope. Meanwhile, controversy grows over plans for a new airport near Machu Picchu, and Donald Trump once again unsettles global observers with unpredictable political moves. Here’s what’s making headlines this week.

Widening Divide

A new United Nations report has found that the gap between rich and poor nations is continuing to grow, reversing years of progress in global development. While wealthier countries have recovered faster from recent economic shocks, many lower-income nations remain burdened by debt, inflation, and limited access to investment.

The findings raise concerns about long-term stability, as inequality between countries increasingly shapes migration, trade, and geopolitical influence. Analysts warn that without coordinated action, the divide could deepen further, leaving entire regions struggling to catch up.

Sky Innovation

Air New Zealand is introducing a new concept for long-haul economy travel with its “Skynest” design, featuring bunk-style sleeping pods for passengers. The layout includes six individual spaces where travelers can lie flat and rest in shifts, offering an alternative to traditional cramped seating.

The concept reflects growing demand for more humane long-distance travel experiences, particularly on ultra-long-haul routes. While access will be limited and likely come at an additional cost, the design signals a broader shift in how airlines are rethinking passenger comfort.

Rare Sighting

A clouded jaguar has been spotted in Honduras’s Sierra del Merendón mountain range for the first time in years, sparking excitement among conservationists. The elusive big cat had not been recorded in the area for decades, raising fears it may have disappeared locally.

Its reappearance offers cautious hope that conservation efforts and remaining forest habitats are still supporting biodiversity. Researchers say the sighting highlights the importance of protecting fragile ecosystems before species vanish entirely.

Sacred Debate

Plans to build a new airport near Machu Picchu have sparked growing controversy in Peru, with critics warning the project could damage one of the world’s most important archaeological and cultural sites. Supporters argue the development would boost tourism and improve access to the region.

Opponents, including archaeologists and environmental groups, say increased traffic risks overwhelming the fragile landscape and undermining preservation efforts. The debate reflects a broader tension between economic development and the protection of heritage sites.

Political Shockwaves

A fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran has done little to calm global nerves after Donald Trump issued a series of escalating threats on social media during the final hours of negotiations. In one post, he warned that Iran would face “devastating consequences” if it failed to comply with US demands on shipping routes and regional security.

While the ceasefire has temporarily halted direct confrontation, diplomats say the tone of the exchange has raised concerns about how quickly tensions could reignite. For allies and investors, the episode underscores a familiar risk: that policy can shift rapidly, not through formal channels, but through public statements that move markets and reshape geopolitical expectations overnight.
