From the misty cliffs of China to the windswept plains of Patagonia, our planet is resplendent with jaw-dropping natural beauty. But what does it take to elevate a place to truly breathtaking? It’s not just the scenery—it’s the mix of geological wonder, vivid color, rich culture, emotional connection, and the sense that you’ve stumbled into something unique. Eternal. Maybe even magical.

And while there are no doubt countless potential entries throughout the world, here are 10 breathtaking places in the world we’ve found that prove we live on one magnificent masterpiece of a planet.

1. China – A Living Scroll of Earthly Wonders

Tianzi Mountains in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Hunan Province, China

For a country as guarded and shrouded in mystery as China, you might not know that it boasts some of the most breathtaking places in the world. In a single country, you can hike floating stone pillars, drift past ancient karsts, and wander through rainbow-colored alpine valleys. These landscapes are more than scenic—they are saturated with culture, legend, and biodiversity. They blend geological wonder with mystical and cultural resonance.

Just a few spots you might consider visiting if you make it to China include:

  • Zhangjiajie, Hunan: These sandstone pillars defy gravity and reality. Shrouded in fog, they were the inspiration for the movie Avatar’s floating Hallelujah Mountains.
  • Guilin and the Li River: A masterpiece of water-land harmony, where karst peaks pierce the sky like a classical painting. The blend of gentle water and rugged rock creates a visual poetry known across China.
  • Jiuzhaigou Valley: Imagine turquoise lakes, tiered waterfalls, and forests aflame with seasonal color. Its kaleidoscopic palette turns a hike into a surrealist painting come to life.
  • Huangshan (Yellow Mountains): Granite spires erupt above the clouds. Watch the sunrise as fog spills over peaks, and you’ll understand why poets and monks have been climbing here for centuries.
  • The Three Gorges, Yangtze River: A dramatic canyon passage carved by one of the world’s great rivers. Towering cliffs, ancient temples, and echoing history—this isn’t just a place to see, but a place to feel.

2. Iceland – Where Fire Meets Ice

Iceland feels like a planet unto itself: lava fields, geysers, glaciers, and black sand beaches. You can stand beneath waterfalls, bathe in geothermal lagoons, or chase the Northern Lights across the Arctic sky. It’s the ultimate collision of elements. Few places on Earth are more beautiful, diverse, and dramatic than Iceland. Iceland’s sheer scale and power is a constant reminder that Earth is still in motion. It’s humbling and heart-pounding all at once.

Two destinations you definitely do not want to miss if you’re lucky enough to get there are:

  • Seljalandsfoss: One of the few waterfalls you can walk behind—a shimmering veil with the sunset glowing through it. Scale and movement make it feel alive.
  • Reynisfjara Beach: Black basalt sands, roaring Atlantic waves, and hexagonal stone columns. This is nature’s design studio.

3. Scotland – Storybook Highlands and Fairy Pools

Scotland is a moody poem of green hills, misty lochs, and dramatic cliffs. This is landscape soaked in legend. Scotland’s mystical and cultural tie-ins—from Celtic folklore to ruined castles—give it a romantic gravity few places can match. But its wild heart beats loudest in the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. If you get a chance to visit, make sure to check out:

  • The Highlands: Sweeping moorlands, roaming stags, and lochs that mirror the clouds. There’s an almost cinematic tranquility to it all.
  • Isle of Skye: Fairy Pools, jagged peaks, and coastal cliffs that plunge into the sea. You half expect a wizard to appear from the fog.

4. Canada – Wilderness in Technicolor

In Canada’s west, the Rockies rise with snow-dusted grandeur. But what really takes your breath away is the vibrant color palette of the land. This is nature in high-definition. Biodiversity thrives—grizzly bears, elk, bald eagles—and the scale of the mountains offers both awe and stillness. It’s adventure, serenity, and storybook color in one.

Make sure to get to:

  • Banff & Jasper National Parks: Electric-blue lakes like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake shimmer beneath towering peaks. In summer, wildflowers blanket the valleys; in winter, snow turns everything into a snow globe.

5. Croatia – Water’s Masterpiece

Plitvice Lakes National Park feels like a natural symphony: 16 terraced lakes flowing into one another through waterfalls and mossy bridges. Shades of turquoise and emerald swirl together, creating pure visual poetry. The contrast between cascading water and still pools is spellbinding.

Croatia proves that sometimes beauty lies in geometry—how water flows, how color settles. It’s a quieter form of majesty, but just as profound.

6. Bolivia – Thunder and Silence

Bolivia is an unexpected land of extremes—sky-high altitudes, flamingo-dotted lakes, and landscapes that look like another planet. Bolivia is more than beautiful—it’s otherworldly. These landscapes challenge your senses and shift your perception of what Earth can look like.

Areas of particular notice are:

  • Salar de Uyuni: The world’s largest salt flat, stretching over 4,000 square miles, becomes a giant mirror during the rainy season. It’s like walking through the sky.
  • Laguna Colorada: A blood-red lake populated by flamingos and fringed by white borax beaches and steaming geysers.
  • Eduardo Avaroa Reserve: A kaleidoscope of volcanic mountains, colorful lagoons, and surreal rock formations.

7. Zambia/Zimbabwe – Smoke That Thunders

The sensory impact of Victoria Falls is unreal. You hear it before you see it. You feel it before you touch it. This is raw, overwhelming beauty—sheer power that carves valleys and reshapes ecosystems. At over 5,600 feet wide, this is the world’s largest curtain of falling water. The spray from the Zambezi River alone creates a rainforest in the middle of savanna.

8. Peru – Sacred Geometry in the Sky

Machu Picchu isn’t just a beautiful site—it’s a cultural monument that dates back to the 15th century. Its terraces and temples tell stories of ancient engineering and spiritual connection, carved into the bones of the Earth. Set high in the Andes, this Incan citadel blends architecture and mountain into a single sacred structure. Surrounded by jungle mist and cloud-topped peaks, it feels untouched by time.

9. Madagascar – The Alien Island

Madagascar is Earth’s evolutionary playground—an island where time and isolation have shaped life into astonishing forms. Over 90% of its wildlife exists nowhere else. This is not just biodiversity—it’s biological storytelling at its finest, where every branch and cliff holds a species found only here.

  • Avenue of the Baobabs: Towering, alien-like trees that line dusty roads like ancient sentinels.
  • Tsingy de Bemaraha: A jagged forest of limestone needles, home to rare lemurs and orchids.

10. New Zealand – Nature’s Masterpiece

A near-mythical variety of landscapes in a compact space, in New Zealand the journey feels as rewarding as the destination. New Zealand’s landscapes are so cinematic, they’ve literally become the backdrop for some of the greatest epics ever filmed, including the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Game of Thrones series. But movies don’t do it justice. The South Island’s snowcapped peaks and turquoise lakes contrast beautifully with the North Island’s geothermal wonders and Māori culture. Whether you’re hiking Tongariro, kayaking through Milford Sound, or sipping wine in Marlborough, NZ is where raw beauty and adventure collide.

New Zealand condenses every type of epic terrain into two islands. Glacial fjords, volcanic craters, rolling hills, and primeval forests—this is Middle-earth brought to life.

  • Fiordland National Park: Towering cliffs, blackwater lakes, and deep fjords like Milford Sound shimmer with moody, atmospheric light.
  • Tongariro National Park: A volcanic landscape so otherworldly it starred as Mordor in The Lord of the Rings—geysers, alpine meadows, and lava plains.

These are just a handful of countries and regions that serve as portals into Earth’s profound beauty. Each one a masterpiece of power, color, shape, and spirit. They remind us that nature isn’t just visual; it’s visceral. You feel it in your bones, your breath, your heartbeat. And whether it’s a mist-veiled mountain in China, a roaring waterfall in Africa, or a silent canoe ride under the stars, these places will take your breath away and give you life at the same time.
