Find Your Future

Main Reasons For Becoming An Expat

There are many reasons for people to live abroad this is a very personal question, so I guess every expat will give a different answer.  Moving overseas can dramatically change your life for the better.  In fact, there are a whole host of reasons why people decide to move to another country. Living overseas can offer new opportunities, new lifestyles, new careers and a new direction.

Better Employment

One of the main reasons that people cite to move abroad is employment. Perhaps you’ve been seconded to an overseas branch of your company, or perhaps you’re a remote worker who is no longer tied down to any particular time zone. Or perhaps you’ve just decided to take a chance abroad.

Gain Independence

Gaining independence in every aspect of your life is an invaluable asset. It is truly wonderful of being skillful to depend upon yourself. You are encouraged to just depend on yourself by moving abroad. By learning different things, you begin to develop self-confidence and trust in yourself as independence is a big move that helps you in different areas of your life.

Experience a New Culture

For those who are looking to broaden their horizons, there is nothing better than experiencing a new culture abroad.

Adapting to a new culture can be difficult, especially when moving abroad. Most people who live in a foreign country for some time go through an adjustment period during which “Culture Shock” is experienced. Once culture shock is understood, its effects can be minimized dramatically.

Expatriates usually experience the following phases while adjusting to their new country:

  • Honeymoon phase
  • Negotiation phase
  • Adjustment phase
  • Reverse culture shock
  • Countering Culture Shock

Be open to accepting cultural differences and alternative ways of doing things. The unfamiliar may be frightening at first but in time you will find yourself taking these once-unfamiliar situations for granted.

Family Bonding

Parents will often choose to move abroad for the numerous advantages it brings for their Children will get an invaluable experience of learning more languages and mixing with other children from different cultures and backgrounds. Both of these advantages may benefit them later in life.  Many US American expats move abroad to live in their partner’s home country or for love, and will stay abroad forever.

Better Education

Many expats move abroad with their families to give their children better prospects for their learning and development. Countries in North America and Western Europe are rightly famed for their world-leading education systems, and we are accustomed to seeing high proportions of foreign students enrolling in our educational institutions.

But it works the other way too. There are some excellent centers of education around the world that offer superb possibilities for your children’s learning and development

Make More Money, Or Save More Money

Expats often reference the reduced cost of living as a primary factor in moving abroad. Typically, money earned at home goes further abroad, and additional disposable income makes many experiences and adventures more accessible to expats.

Some big cities where many companies have second offices are notoriously expensive, but not all of them are. Especially if you are able to keep your current salary, or even negotiate a salary increase in return for going to work for your company in a different country, you might make and save more money. You also might find that just working in a different country will save you money if the cost of living is less. Plus, taxation policies for British expats in many countries are extremely beneficial. So while you may get the same Figure on your payslip abroad as you are at home, in reality, you are making significantly more.

Your Tastes Will Change

Once you start living your new expat life, your taste for fashion, food, and various lifestyle products will change gradually. You will probably broaden your horizons and outlook on people and culture. You will soon realize that you are purchasing things that you normally won’t bother to look at. Once you start mingling with the locals and submerge in the culture and traditions of a new destination, your preference for almost everything is bound to change… maybe for the better.

You Might Not Ever Get This Chance Again

Even challenging experiences help build us as people and there will be plenty of those along the way. You can also expect plenty of life affirming moments that you’ll simply never forget. New dawns, new jobs, new friends and new relationships are all great reasons to embrace the dream.  When you live in a new city, there will always be a learning curve.  You are going to get lost a few times on your way back home and communicating with a language barrier and making new friends can be difficult at best. But it is all about pushing through and having the patience to make it through the adjustment period. Like with all things, living abroad does get easier with time.

You Like The Idea, Now To Decide Where To Live

Some of the best countries to begin an expat life in 2023 include:

  • Mexico – Living in Mexico can be very enriching: you will enjoy amazing weather, wonderful nature and great food while most likely reducing your cost of living, and there are a lot of expats in Mexico, so you will be in a good company.
  • Indonesia – One of the fastest growing countries in South-East Asia, with a vibrant local culture and a rich history of dance, music and crafts. Due to its economy and industry, Indonesia is also home to a rapidly growing expatriate community and has many things to offer newcomers.
  • Taiwan – Taiwan is an autonomous democratic island.  The people are friendly and welcoming.  Many expats who’ve set up camp on the island live a cushy lifestyle thanks to the benefits provided by their companies. It has a thriving expat scene with loads of clubs, social gatherings, and events.
  • Portugal – With its welcoming locals and pleasant climate, offers expats a very good quality of life.  Almost eight out of ten expats (79%) are generally satisfied with local socializing and leisure activities.
  • Spain – Has a lower cost of living , is retirement friendly, thanks to the non-lucrative visa.  It has low property costs, and free (or cheap) top-notch healthcare.

Making The Move To Another Country Can Be Challenging

Whether you travel light or heavy, you will be forced to cull some of your belongings when you move, or at least leave them behind. This is liberating in itself, and is one of the key reasons why so many people change for the better when they move.

You will lose your attachment to material things, and become more aware of people and what they can offer you.

Wherever you move, go with total peace of mind. Life is for living and if you have a burning desire to become an Expat then go for it.
