From trade warnings to tourism perks, the global landscape this week is shaped by shifting policies and rising anxieties. Spain cracks down on Airbnb, the US State Department issues a rare global security alert, and Japan dangles free flights to lure international visitors. Meanwhile, the latest Global Peace Index reveals where calm still reigns—and where it doesn’t. Here’s what’s making the latest global news this week.

Global Alert

The US State Department has issued a rare worldwide security advisory ahead of the summer travel season, encouraging Americans abroad to stay informed and exercise added caution. The notice cites elevated global tensions, along with a general increase in security-related incidents in certain regions.

While such alerts are unusual, they are not without precedent—and with international travel continuing to rebound, most travelers appear undeterred. The advisory serves as a reminder to stay aware, register with local embassies if needed, and follow updates while abroad.

Free Flights for Tourists

Japan Airlines is offering international travelers a sweetener for 2025: free one-way domestic flights within Japan. Visitors from countries like the US, Canada, Australia, and China who book an international ticket through JAL can now add a domestic leg—such as Tokyo to Sapporo or Osaka to Fukuoka—at no extra cost.

The promotion aims to boost regional tourism and spread visitor traffic beyond Japan’s major cities. With inbound tourism surging post-pandemic, Japan is keen to showcase its full geographic and cultural diversity.

Where Peace Reigns

The 2025 Global Peace Index has just been released, ranking Iceland, Denmark, and Ireland as the world’s most peaceful countries. Meanwhile, the United States failed to crack the top 100—landing at #128, behind nations like India and South Africa.

The index evaluates 163 countries based on political stability, crime rates, and conflict levels. The report also noted a general decline in global peace, citing ongoing wars, political unrest, and rising violence in many parts of the world.

Trade Talk Tensions

In a recent rally, Donald Trump warned that Japan’s trade privileges could be on the line. Calling the country “spoiled,” Trump suggested that a US-Japan trade deal may not materialize if Japan doesn’t offer more favorable terms.

The remarks have drawn mixed reactions in Tokyo, where officials are watching closely but avoiding public escalation. For now, the rhetoric adds yet another layer of uncertainty to an already shifting global trade landscape

Airbnb Under Fire

Spain has ordered the removal of more than 65,000 Airbnb listings as part of a sweeping crackdown on short-term rentals. The government says the move is aimed at addressing housing shortages and rising rents in major cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia—where locals have long complained about being priced out by tourists.

The decision marks one of the most aggressive anti-Airbnb actions in Europe to date. As housing protests grow louder across the continent, Spain’s stance may signal a broader trend toward regulating the sharing economy.
