The coaches run to Johor Bahru from approximately S$3. Average running time is 1 hour 18 minutes, but most of this is up to the queue at the checkpoint. There are approximately 138 services per day, with the first service at 07:00 and the last at 23:03. Pick-ups: Changi Airport, Expo MRT, Woodlands Civic Centre and Tuas Checkpoint.

The trip to Johor Bahru is short. The waiting is not. Most of your time on a Singapore to JB bus goes to standing in a checkpoint queue, not to sitting on the road. Get the timing right and the same trip takes half as long.

This guide covers the two land crossings, what a seat costs, where coaches set you down, what happens at immigration, and the hours when the border moves fastest.

The Two Land Crossings and How Long Each One Takes

Two roads link the island to Johor. Every coach uses one or the other, and which one your service takes changes both your journey and where you end up.

CrossingSingapore sideJohor sideLands you near
Northern linkWoodlands CheckpointJB checkpointJB city centre
Second LinkTuas CheckpointGelang PatahIskandar Puteri, west Johor

Confirm which crossing your operator uses before you book.

redBus puts the average run at 1 hour 18 minutes. On a quiet weekday morning it can be under an hour. On a Friday evening or the first day of a school holiday, two to three hours is normal. The road part barely changes. The queue is the whole story.

What You Pay and Where the Bus Sets You Down in JB

The price of a fare is from S$3 to approximately S$10 depending on the operator and the location of the boarding point. Johor Bahru to Singapore is priced at around S$3.13 when returning. It is a very inexpensive trip anywhere.

Where you can board in Singapore

  • Changi Airport – useful if you land and head straight for Johor.
  • Expo MRT Station, Exit B – the main east-side pick-up.
  • Woodlands Civic Centre – closest to the northern crossing.
  • Tuas Checkpoint – for services using the Second Link.
  • Central stops include Grantral Mall, Cantonment Link, Great World City and Resorts World Sentosa.

Where you get off in Johor

  • Johor checkpoint – clear immigration and walk through to JB Sentral and the city centre.
  • Gelang Patah Terminal – for Second Link services and west Johor.
  • Selected roadside stops, which vary by operator.

Check the drop-off before you pay. Gelang Patah and the city centre are about 30 km apart, and a coach to the wrong side of Johor costs you an hour you did not budget for.

Booking Ahead Online, and When the Counter Is Fine

With 138 daily services, this is not a route where seats vanish. Even so, booking a bus ticket online fixes your departure time, and that matters more here than the seat itself.

Book ahead when

  • You travel on a Friday evening, a Sunday evening or a public holiday.
  • You have a fixed appointment on the other side.
  • You want a specific boarding point rather than whatever leaves next.

The counter is fine when

  • You travel midweek and outside the commuter peaks.
  • You are flexible about which coach you take.
  • You are already standing at the terminal.

Booking in four steps

  1. Set Singapore to Johor Bahru and your date.
  2. Filter by boarding point before you compare fares.
  3. Check which crossing and which drop-off the service uses.
  4. Enter each name as the passport shows it, then pay by card.
Beat the Border Traffic at JB Checkpoint With These Quick Tips

Immigration at the JB Checkpoint, Explained Simply

You clear immigration twice, once on each side. You take your bag off the coach both times and get back on the same vehicle afterwards. Nobody waits for you, so note the plate number when you board.

On the northern crossing, Malaysian clearance is at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, the complex known as JB CIQ. Second Link services clear at the Sultan Abu Bakar complex instead. Photography and video are not allowed inside the immigration halls.

What the stop actually looks like

  1. The coach pulls in on the Singapore side. Everyone gets off with their bags.
  2. You clear departure immigration and walk to the reboarding bay.
  3. The coach crosses and stops again on the Johor side.
  4. You clear arrival immigration, collect your bags and reboard.
  5. The coach runs the last few minutes to your drop-off point.

Quiet Hours and Busy Hours at the JB Border Crossings

Tens of thousands of people cross this border every day, most of them for work or school. The traffic follows their week, not the tourist calendar. Once you know the pattern, you can plan around it.

WhenWhat the border looks like
Weekday mid-morning to mid-afternoonQuietest window in either direction
Weekday early morning, northboundHeavy, commuters heading into Johor
Weekday early evening, southboundHeavy, the same crowd going home
Friday eveningBusiest of the week in both directions
Sunday eveningHeavy southbound return traffic
Public and school holidaysAdd an hour or more to any slot

Four ways to lose less time at the border

GLOBAL RELOCATION BLUEPRINT
  • Cross between 10:00 and 15:00 on a weekday if you possibly can.
  • Submit your arrival card the night before, not in the queue.
  • Keep your passport in your hand, not in your bag.
  • Skip Friday evening. Move the trip to Thursday or Saturday morning instead.

Johor is also a useful starting point for longer trips north. If you are travelling onward, the Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur[1]  route runs separately, and Tourism Malaysia shares current information on what is open in the state.

This is one of the least expensive border crossings you can make, but planning still is important. The ticket costs just a few dollars one way, but the key is making the right choice of departure time!

To have a hassle-free journey, you can choose to take your Singapore to JB bus during the day of the week, fill out your arrival card before you depart and find out which crossing the service will take. This way you will land on the Johor side that is best suited for your plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the bus from Singapore to JB?

From S$3 to about S$10 one way. The return from Johor Bahru starts at S$3.13. The operator and your boarding point decide where you land in that range.

How long does the bus to JB take?

The average is 1 hour 18 minutes. Off-peak on a weekday it can be under an hour. On a Friday evening or a holiday it can stretch to two or three hours, almost all of it at the checkpoint.

Do I need to book a JB bus ticket online?

Not always. With 138 services a day you can usually turn up midweek and take the next one. Book ahead for Friday evenings, Sunday evenings, holidays, or whenever you have a fixed appointment waiting.

Where do buses drop you off in Johor Bahru?

Most set you down at the Johor checkpoint, which puts you in the city centre on foot. Services using the Second Link drop at Gelang Patah Terminal instead, about 30 km west.

The Bottom Line

This is the lowest cost border crossing you’ll ever cross and the most rewarding to plan. The ticket price is a couple of dollars one way or the other. The hour you save comes from choosing the right slot. Arrange your Singapore to JB bus for a midday bus on a weekday and get your arrival card in advance to make sure that you get on the side of Johor that you want to be on.
