Working abroad can be an exciting, lucrative and rewarding experience.  Virtually all careers and services are needed almost anywhere in the world that interests you.  If you’ve been dreaming of shaking up your life while still bringing in the bacon, then perhaps it’s time you looked overseas for employment.

Why Work Overseas?

People choose to work abroad for numerous reasons.  Some are intrigued by the chance to immerse themselves in a new and different culture.  Even if they’re still doing the same work or something similar, navigating through the trials and tribulations of a new country can provide a richer learning experience than any university or school can provide.

For other people, pursuing an international position is the best way for them to progress their careers.  Having international experience not only looks great in any field on a resume, but the insight gained from colleagues who have a completely different set of values and traditions is irreplaceable in the workplace.

Of course, many choose a job overseas purely for financial reasons.  Lots of companies offer fantastic relocation packages and bonuses for employees that make the leap to live and work in a new country.  In addition, the desire to counteract a weak economy has fueled more than its fair share of international careers.

Where to Look for International Jobs?

These days, largely in part to the Internet and progressive inter-country relations, finding employment abroad is easier than ever.  You can take your search in two different directions:  Search for jobs within your field internationally or determine where you’d like to work and look for employment there.  If you’re lucky, you get the best of both worlds:  Progressing your career in your location of choice.

No matter which route you decide to go with, before agreeing to anything, make sure that the area’s work culture is conducive to your life.  For instance, you might be expected to work 60 to 80 hours per week in China.  If the standard 40 hours per week in the States is a stretch for you, then China may not be the best choice.

When first starting your search, reach out to your connections and acquaintances.  Social media sites like Facebook and LinkedIn are an easy way to put the word out that you’re in the market for an international position.  Plus, companies are always more likely to hire someone they’re familiar with or who has a good referral.

Your second best resource is the Internet.  Here you can find an endless number of trade sites, placement agencies, international head hunters, and job search engines to assist in your goal of an overseas job.

With a little planning and lots of ambition, finding your dream job abroad can be one of the most gratifying  undertakings of your life, both personally and professionally.
