What better way to get to know a country but through volunteer work. There are different programs you can participate in. Here is a list of some of them:

Highland Conservation

If you love the outdoors and have a passion for animals volunteering with the Highland Conservation might be just what you are looking for. You will be trained to protect wildlife in the Scottish Highlands like like the European Wild Cat, White-Tailed Eagle, European Otter, European Otter, Osprey and Golden Eagle and undertake tasks as part of a small team like the felling of non-native trees, wildlife monitoring & research, removing invasive plants, maintaining footpaths, constructing fences, installing reserve signs, building boardwalks, repairing bird hides.

The minimum/maximum stay is of 24 weeks.

Whales and Dolphins of the Moray Firth

The courses include an 11-day training placement and participants will have the opportunity to learn about the whales and dolphins of the Moray Firth and their dynamic marine environment first hand. Participants will work closely alongside a dedicated team of biologists at the same time providing support for the organization’s research program.

Students will learn the principles of field research design, know the basic techniques of marine mammal rescue, and know the important conservation issues through marine conservation activities.

Edinburgh/Europe Travel writing Researcher Reviewers Project

The internship involves participating in Journalism creative workshops usually on weekday mornings while during the afternoons creating a travel guide aimed at young people visiting the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh.

The project members work together within their creative team and discover and explore the sites of Edinburgh. They undertake a set schedule and are involved in visiting the best historical sites of Edinburgh, the museums and all that Edinburgh has to offer the adventurous traveller.

Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue

Hessilhead depends on volunteers to keep the centre running. We would like to hear from dedicated, hard working people willing to volunteer either as part of our wildlife care team or maintenance team. Training is given on site, but plenty of common sense and an ability to cope with a variety of tasks is required for this rewarding job. You can help Hessilhead by volunteering your time, services or garden.

Resident volunteers stay in cabins on site. This gives an opportunity to become more involved with the running of the centre, to help with evening feeds and admissions and to take part in rescues, releases and fundraising events.

RSPCA – Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Our volunteers make a huge contribution to the work we do to prevent cruelty, promote kindness to and alleviate suffering of animals. As a volunteer you can gain important transferable skills in fundraising, campaigning, finance, team building, management, computers, administration – the list is endless. Anyone can volunteer. We value diversity and encourage volunteers from all sections of the community. There are many ways you can help us make a difference, no matter how much time you have available or the level of commitment you can afford to give.
