Sunday Funday with New Friends—Chronicles of Life in a New Land
No matter the country, folks in almost every beach town across the world look forward to celebrating Sunday Funday. In the sweet little town of San Pedro, Belize—which sits on an island called Ambergris Caye, which sits, consequently, in the Caribbean Sea—tourists and locals alike are no exception.
One fun spot I happened across this past Sunday is Crazy Canucks. It’s an expat-owned (Canadian, if you haven’t guessed) bar and grill that hosts not only Sunday Funday bands and BBQ, but karaoke, trivia, and more live music all throughout the week. The best part—for me—is that it’s ever so conveniently located on the beachfront of the Exotic Caye Beach Resort— right down the road from the property of my apartment at the Grand Baymen Gardens. I can walk right over.
A few days earlier a friend of mine back home in North Carolina virtually—via Facebook—introduced me to a friend of hers who has been living on Ambergris Caye since the spring. Through a series of messages, this lovely lady offered to come pick me up and take me to Crazy Canucks, her regular Sunday Funday spot. We set a time, and I told her where I was staying. She offered to pick me up and said she should be able to find it without directions.
But, this is where we went wrong.
When she couldn’t find her way after about 45 minutes, she decided to simply stop at Crazy Canucks and ask for directions. That’s when we found out that my place was a mere three-minute walk from the bar.
It can be frustrating, but these are the kinds of Abbott & Costello-style catastrophes you have to get used to when you haven’t hooked up that lifeline that we all like to call a cell phone, yet.
However, we did finally find each other, along with a spot in the sand to drink watermelon mojitos. The fresh breeze from the ocean blew just strong enough to cool the humid night and keep away unwanted mosquito munches. Since there’s no front wall to this place, revelries spill straight out onto the beach. A live band covers popular hits while small groups laugh and chat at tables or dance barefoot in the sand.
My friend has lived here longer than I have, and she introduced me to a couple other locals she’s befriended. I feel happy to be expanding my social circle. Moving to a place without knowing anyone is sometimes intimidating, but there are always a few friendly faces to count on. And, even if we don’t get to become life-long friends, it’s a pleasant enough way to pass an afternoon and gather insider intel about the island.
So, before I knew it, I had a scuba dive date on the Belize Barrier Reef planned for Saturday and a trip to Caye Caulker set for next Sunday. My social calendar is growing and I’m excited to see what adventures await me around the island, especially out in this beautiful bit of Belizean blue water.
