What Veterans & Military Members Need to Know in 2020

If you have dedicated time to serving your country, your transition to civilian life can be easier when you take advantage of the resources that are available to you. It can be hard to know where to look, as all of the information is not in one place.

To get you started, we have compiled a list of things you need to know in 2020.

You Can Protect Your Family

Protecting your family starts with a life insurance policy from a reputable insurer. With the right plan, you will find comfort in the knowledge your loved ones will be financially secure if they are ever left without you. The plan can be customized to suit your unique circumstances and might cover education costs, a funeral or disability expenses resulting from an accident.

Not all policies are the same, and it is a good idea to compare them side by side. Some insurers such as USAA offer competitive military-related benefits and discounts.

You Can Get Discounts

Did you know military personnel, veterans and their families can get discounts from a range of different companies? If you have a valid ID, you could be entitled to a percentage discount on goods and services.

There is a long list of businesses that offer discounts, and they will usually advertise their conditions online or in-store. Don’t be afraid to ask, because your favorite local cafe might have a special deal that you aren’t aware of. Common categories for military and veteran discounts include financial institutions, retail outlets, medical services, hotels and restaurants.

You Can Find Others in the Same Situation

Even if you have a supportive family and friend group, you still might feel the need to connect with others who have had similar experiences. There will be a veteran or military association in your local area that caters to your interests. For example, you may like to join a group for seniors, become involved with a volunteering organization or meet semi-regularly for an icy-cold beer. No matter what you want from the social group, there will be a suitable match out there.

Do your research before committing to an association, especially if there is a fee involved. For those who don’t have time to commit to in-person networking, there is the option to join an online group.

You Can Access Health Services

There are healthcare benefits available for military personnel and veterans. You can sign up for a range of different insurance plans that are designed to help you maintain your independence.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and there are services available to offer you support if you need it. The list of resources includes a helpline for crisis, sexual assault, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse.

Accessing Military and Veteran Benefits in 2020

The good news is, military members and veterans are entitled to a range of benefits. In 2020 there is a significant amount of support available, including shopping and dining discounts, competitive insurance policies, networking opportunities and health services.

Whether you want to plan for the future or make your short-term living more comfortable, the ideas listed in the article above will be a good starting point.
