You may have noticed the focus on Portugal lately, with so much well-deserved attention as a \u201cmust-see destination.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve talked about the history of Portugal in a previous article, <\/span>California in Europe<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\"Portugal<\/span><\/p>\n

Why? Because Portugal is the authentic Europe, unknown and unspoiled. It\u2019s legendary for its weather, wine, and food.\u00a0It\u2019s also known for the friendliness of its people. I hope you\u2019ll join us. You\u2019ll never forget it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Lisbon is one of Europe\u2019s most charming, timeless, and elegant cities. It is very clean and rated the third-safest city in the world. For this week, we expect guests from various countries; however, coming from North America, you would arrive in Lisbon in the morning. <\/span><\/p>\n

Highlights <\/b><\/h2>\n

Day 1 – Arrival \u2013 Lisbon <\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0have lunch and a glass of wine at an open-air caf\u00e9 at the Rua da Prata\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2026and while you are, reflect that archaeologists have excavated a <\/span>2,000-year-old Roman street directly underneath us<\/span>, with shops and caf\u00e9s just like what we\u2019re enjoying right now. I told you Lisbon is old \u2013 a thousand years old by the time of Rome.<\/span><\/p>\n

visit \u00a0<\/span>St. George\u2019s Castle<\/span><\/a>, Lisbon. The hill was used by indigenous Celtic tribes, then by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and finally the Portuguese themselves. In Portuguese, it is called <\/span>Castelo de S\u00e3o Jorge<\/span><\/a> and overlooks the city\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

After dinner, there\u2019s the option of either relaxing or checking out the nightlife in Baixa – Chiado, which is extremely popular.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 2 \u2013 Belem and Lisbon<\/b><\/p>\n

The nearby Belem area of Lisbon is considered the \u201cCapital of the Portuguese Discoveries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Torre<\/span><\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>Tower of belem<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is the landmark of Portugal, built in the early 1500s at the height of Portugal\u2019s great Age of Exploration. We\u2019ll enjoy breathtaking views along the Tagus River.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s across from the <\/span>World Heritage Site of the Monastery of Jer\u00f3nimos<\/span><\/a>, one of the most magnificent buildings in Europe and housing the tomb of Portugal\u2019s greatest explorer,\u00a0<\/span>Vasco da Gama<\/span><\/a>. It is a solemn moment to be in the presence of such epic history.<\/span><\/p>\n

While you’re in Belem, we\u2019ll visit two extraordinary museums. First, the Museu dos Coches, \u201cMuseum of the Coaches,\u201d from times when there were only horse-drawn carriages.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Museu\"Museu<\/span>And then there is the incredible Museu de Marinha, or \u201cNavy Museum,\u201d which houses original ships from Portugal\u2019s Age of Exploration. These are not replicas, you will be seeing the real deal.<\/span><\/p>\n

After stopping to sample the delicious pastries at the famous <\/span>Past\u00e9is de Bel\u00e9m<\/span><\/i>, we will head into Lisbon.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the Praca do Comercio (Commercial Plaza) near the water.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dinner will be delicious Portuguese cuisine nearby at a highly-rated restaurant. After dinner and a classic Portuguese musical fado show, those who are still energized can visit one of Lisbon\u2019s most popular clubs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 3 \u2013\u00a0 Historic Sintra <\/b><\/p>\n

Today, you’re <\/span>in Sintra, the famous historical city on a hill where we\u2019ll stay and tour the extraordinary <\/span>World Heritage Site of Sintra<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay at the classic hotel Tivoli, with panoramic views in the center of historic Sintra and access to everything in the village.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Palace of Monserrate<\/span><\/a> has a history that goes back to 1540, and it was completely renovated several times over the centuries to its current pristine condition. In<\/span> 1809,\u00a0<\/span>Lord Byron\u00a0<\/span><\/a>visited the place and described it as the \u201c<\/span>first and foremost beautiful place in the Kingdom.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

visit the magical fairytale <\/span>Pena Palace<\/span><\/a>, the summer residence of the Portuguese royalty during the 19<\/span>th\u00a0<\/span>century:<\/span>

\u2026descend to the famous <\/span>Lawrence\u2019s Hotel<\/span><\/i>\u00a0for afternoon tea and pastries.\u00a0This is where Lord Byron stayed in 1809 to write his poem\u00a0<\/span>Childe Harold\u2019s Pilgrimage<\/span><\/i>, in which he praised Sintra as a “glorious Eden\u2026 palaces and gardens rising in the midst of rocks, cataracts, and precipices; convents on stupendous heights.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After a hearty Portuguese lunch, we can explore this afternoon, visiting the <\/span>Quinta da Regaleira<\/span><\/a> with beautiful expansive gardens and their famous Initiation Well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 4 – The Portuguese Riviera <\/b><\/p>\n

After breakfast with a view at the Tivoli\u2019s buffet, head for the coast – the Portuguese Riviera. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cascais is teeming with cool and quaint little shops, cafes, and bars. Beer lovers can walk over to O\u2019Luain\u2019s Irish Pub for a Guinness or Kilkenny.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then you can stroll along the boardwalk to see classic architecture and year-round beachgoers as you pass all the pocket beaches along the Cascais-Estoril Promenade.<\/span><\/p>\n

take a spectacular scenic drive up the coast where we\u2019re likely to see surfers at Guincho Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then continue on to your first stop at <\/span>Cabo da Roca<\/span><\/a>, the westernmost point of land in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Up the coastline, you’ll arrive at our oceanfront hotel in the seaside village of Ericeira. This evening you can enjoy the quiet beach and the sunset before dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 5 \u2013 The Silver Coast of Portugal<\/b><\/p>\n

leave Ericeira and head out for a visit to the walled medieval city of <\/span>Obidos<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

All of Obidos has been declared a national monument. It is known as the “Wedding Present Town” because it was a gift that King Dinis gave to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Medieval Castle of Obidos<\/span><\/a> encircles the town, often called one of Europe\u2019s most romantic villages.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the day, drive to your hotel, Arribas in Colares \u2013 right on the sea at Praia Grande. Every single room at the Arribas has a spectacular ocean view. Have dinner overlooking the ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 6 – The Algarve<\/b><\/p>\n

continue on your way to the Algarve – the ever-popular summer destination for Portuguese and foreigners alike. It is also home to increasing numbers of non-Portuguese residents; many from the U.K., countries in Europe, and the U.S. Soon you will see what they love so much about it. <\/span><\/p>\n

First is Faro, on the Southern Coast, the regional capital of the Algarve. Faro has an international airport which makes it convenient if this becomes home.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can see Tavira, Albufeira, Portimao, and other towns to give you an idea of the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then it\u2019s a short drive to Lagos, an increasingly popular retirement and vacation spot.<\/span><\/p>\n
