Even
though it is one of the smallest country in the Americas, (slightly smaller
in size than Washington State), Uruguay has its own cinema, its own poetry,
its own literature, its own culture, its own unique food, and in its way,
its very own architecture. It is said that
the Tango originated in Uruguay, not Argentina. Uruguay is unique in many
ways. The links on this page is but a sample of the art and culture of
Uruguay. There is no nation in the world of similar size that is so culturally
rich, and certainly no state. Uruguay's economy is characterized
by an export-oriented agricultural sector, a well-educated work force,
and high levels of social spending; hence it is not a very rich nation,
but a highly educated nation. Its experiments with socialism have
produced a decent society of wonderful people, but not a very productive
society, except in the field of art. Sadly, the lack of sufficient industry
pushes many young people abroad in search of jobs. They go abroad
with excellent educations, which drains Uruguay of brains. The problems
created by socialism, and the benefits created by socialism are clear for
all to see. Many people in Uruguay turn to art; probably because they are
intelligent, and there are no opportunties to use that intelligence in
commerce. The bottom line is, that Uruguay is rich in art; perhaps, per
capita, one of the richest in the world. As the Argentine writer, Jorge
Luis Borges said of them, “ . . . Their heroic disposition to differentiate
themselves, their persistence in being themselves, their searching and
early rising soul. If on many occasions, they not only search but find,
it will be mean to envy them for it. The sun, in the mornings, passes by
San Felipe of Montevideo before it comes to Argentina.”

de Torres - El Taller Torres-García
(TTG), the workshop school established by the Uruguayan master Joaquín
Torres-García, served as a catalyst for the consolidation of Torres-García's
aesthetic philosophy as well as for the elaboration of his theories concerning
the role and function of modern art in Latin America. It became a testing
ground for ideas regarding the role of constructivism and abstraction in
the production of an American art, as well as a laboratory for experimenting
with new and traditional materials and techniques. The members of El Taller
produced a significant body of work that included painting, sculpture,
ceramics, wood and iron reliefs, furniture, murals, and architectural projects.
As a model for an integrated artistic community, as well as for the breadth
and range of media and materials that characterized its output, the TTG
has had no precedents or parallels in Latin America. |

| IMAGENES
- is a film and video production house founded in 1986 based in Montevideo,
Uruguay. Its goals are the production and promotion of audiovisual and
other artistic works based on the recording and reproduction of moving
and still images. "Since our foundation we have promoted the right of Uruguayans
to have their own images. Uruguay, with just three million inhabitants
and two million moviegoers has virtually no filmmaking tradition nor legal
regulation for the production, distribution and exhibition of local films." |

Torres Garcia in the Art Museum of the Americas
-A Joaquin Torres Garcia was a pioneer of modernism, Torres-Garcia was
born in Montevideo in 1874 of a Catalan father and Uruguayan mother. His
family moved to Spain in 1891 and settled in Barcelona. Torres-Garcia studied
at the Escuela Oficial de Bellas Artes de Barcelona (the "Llotja") and
at the Academia Baixas. By the end of the decade he had become, along with
Pablo Picasso and Julio Gonzalez, part of the bohemian milieu of the cafe
Els Quatre Gats. In 1903 Torres-Garcia assisted Antoni Gaudi with stained-glass
windows for the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca and later with the windows
for the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. During this time the artist also
executed various mural commissions and developed a style of pastoral and
monumental classicism derived from that of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. |

The art of Uruguay and the richness
of its culture is phenomenal. When we keep in perspective that Uruguay
is smaller in size than Washington State and has a population of less than
4 million it becomes all the more astounding that this tiny nation (second
smallest country on the continent) should have such a rich and pronounced
artistic heritage. It has it's own literature, music, poetry and
visual art. In addition it produces it's own style of cinematography. |
