Jazz drummer
Buddy Rich loved to tell the story about how Lawrence Welk introduced
the Billy Strayhorn composition "Take The A Train." Welk, the famous
middle America band leader said, "Now we're going to play the song, "Take
a train." Buddy would always get hesterical telling the story.
Welk got the song title wrong, but
his inadvertent suggestion is a good one - take a train.
The writer Paul Theroux starting
with a rush-hour subway ride to South Station in Boston to catch Amtrak's
Lake Shore Limited to Chicago and continued by one train after another
to the very tip of South America. It has become one of the most famous
train trips in the world and resulted in the book The Old Patagonian Express. |
