Volcan is located in the Bugaba District in the Province of Chiriqui, at an altitude that varies between 4,000 to 5000 feet and boasts a comfortable year-round climate which ranges between 55°-78° F. This small town is home to the highest point in the country, Volcan Baru, Panama’s only volcano.
Travel in Panama
I have only considered that a foreigner must apply for one of the numerous residency options available through attorneys if they plan to make Panama their new home. A recent visit to Volcan caused me to re-think these residency options. Of course, I knew there were ‘renegades’ that had chosen NOT to apply for residency for some reason, but I never really considered it a way of life.
Panama is the only place in the world where you can surf good waves in two oceans on the same day. Both the Caribbean and Pacific sides of Panama have year round good weather and it’s not a far drive to the various surf beaches to find the perfect wave.
Frommer’s calls Coiba Island “one of the 500 places to see before they disappear”.
The uninhabited Coiba National Park (Nacional Parque Coiba) is 80% ocean and contains the largest coral reef in the eastern Pacific. The park is made up of 38 islands 30 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama in the Chiriqui Bay, including Coiba Island, the largest island in Central America with 503 square kilometers (194 square miles).
“I had an incredibly enriching learning experience, but I also feared that we might be objectifying and exploiting the lives and history of the Embera people.” This is some of the feedback that Anne Gordon de Barrigón received after she led a recent tour deep into the jungle to visit an indigenous Embera tribe. As the owner of a tour company in Panama, it’s a question she must consider often.
I was recently given a tour of the upscale gated community of Altos del Maria by a Panamanian friend and knowledgeable attorney. It took us about an hour, heading west, to reach the turn-off at the Pan-American Highway from Panama City, then another 30 minutes up the road to the subdivision. It is a beautiful drive with breathtaking views on a well maintained road.
Located in Cerro Punta, less than 10 minutes outside the small highland community of Volcan, Hotel Bambito is nestled in among the mountains and jungle. The nicely landscaped grounds and surroundings made me feel like I was back on the Big Island of Hawaii.
One of the most beautiful architectural buildings in Panama is the Church of our Lady of Mount Carmen. Located in the heart of Panama City on Via Espana, it is the most visited church in the country by international tourist. The Gothic architectural style is reminiscent of the Middle Ages, although the first stone wasn’t placed until the 20th century.
Mandarin Chinese is the language spoken by more people than any other in the world. Spanish is the second most popular language, with between 350-400 million native speakers. And English is not far behind in spot number three.
Almost 90% of the population in Panama speaks Spanish. So if you plan to be spending time in the country, you’re going to miss out on a lot if you don’t know the language!
On a recent drive from Panama City to David, we decided to take a short detour and check out the beach at Las Lajas. Las Lajas beach is less than an hour east of David and not far off the Panamanian Highway on the Pacific Ocean.
