Finding employment in Costa Rica, especially as an expatriate, can be difficult. Costa Rica has very strict employment laws with the purpose of keeping most jobs in the hands of native Costa Ricans, and it is for this reason that unemployment is quite low here.
However, the Costa Rican government does occasionally see the need for foreign workers, and there are a few different jobs that may grant you work visas here.
Teaching English
Everyone and their brother thinks that with a month-long TEFL course and a Spanish dictionary, they can come get a job teaching English in Costa Rica. This is NOT the case. For as many legitimate teaching organizations out there, there are just as many scam teaching opportunities. Most English teaching programs looking for new teachers want people who aren’t just TEFL or TESOL certified, they want people who at least majored in Teaching English as a Foreign Language in college. Many private universities and high schools in Costa Rica also hire English teachers, but their requirements are often even more strict. Many look only at candidates with a Masters in TEFL. And even if you manage to find a teaching organization or English school that will accept your TEFL certificate or degree, that establishment may not grant you a work visa. Don’t be discouraged if you are very serious about coming to Costa Rica to teach, but know that there are many road blocks ahead. The more education and experience you have in the field, the more likely you are to find a high paying, legitimate employer that is willing to go through the difficult process of helping you obtain a work visa.
Working for Online Gambling
Online gambling is illegal in the United States, but it’s perfectly legal here in Costa Rica. In fact, its a huge business for high rolling tourists and permanent settlers to Costa Rica. As with any large website, there are a myriad of jobs available, from basic security to webmaster to SEO guru, to bet-taker. There’s no guarantee that you will be granted a work visa working for online gambling or sports betting, but depending on the company, it could become a possibility. This is a line of employment that often hires native English speakers, since many of the people making the bets speak English as well.
Becoming a consultant
One of the best ways to get a job legally in Costa Rica is to become a consultant in your field. Legally, any job in Costa Rica that can prove they require your advice and consultation can hire you. However, you’re not actually allowed to do any work. Your role in the company must only be as a consultant. Still, this is a great way to continue on with your current profession while living in Costa Rica.
