Costa Rica provides excellent health care for its residents and there are many health care options to choose from. Whether you choose to go through the public routes or pay a little extra for care at a private hospital, you’re sure to be impressed by the quality of medical care in this country.
These hospitals are managed by the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS), which is the basic healthcare provider for many Costa Ricans. Although the exteriors of many of Costa Rica’s public hospitals look a bit battered, don’t let their appearances deceive you. These hospitals provide excellent medical care at very low prices. Still, while there are usually nurses or doctors on staff that speak English, they might not always be available to help translate for tourists or expats that are injured. Below is a list of several of the public hospitals in Costa Rica.
Hospital San Juan de Dios
Located near the center of San Jose, this hospital has very well-equipped facilities and is the only hospital in Costa Rica with an adult burn unit.
Hospital Mexico
This hospital is located in the neighborhood of Uruca in San Jose. Hospital Mexico can be crowded and occasionaly suffers from shortages.
Hospital Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia
Located in San Jose as well, this hospital has well-equipped intensive care and cardiac units.
Hospital Nacional de Niños
This hospital, also located in San Jose, cares for children age 12 and under. The pediatricians here are some of the best in Central America.
Hospital San Vicente de Paul
This public hospital is located in Heredia, Costa Rica.
Hospital Nacional Dr. Max Peralta Jimenez
This is the public hospital for Cartago, Costa Rica.
For those who have the money to pay for them, the private hospitals in Costa Rica offer truly phenomenal medical care. In fact, these private hospitals may bear more of a resemblance to the hospitals you are used to from the United States. There is also a better chance of finding more English-speaking staff in a private hospital.
Cima Hospital
Located in the neighborhood of Escazu, about 15 minutes outside of San Jose, Cima Hospital is one of the most popular private hospitals. English is more commonly spoken here, and many expatriots choose Hospital Cima as their favorite hospital, as its look is very similar to hospitals in the States. There are also doctors’ offices on the Hospital campus.
Clinica Biblia
In the center of San Jose, Clinica Biblia is another very popular private hospital which provides excellent care.
Clinica Catolica
This private hospital is located in Guadalupe, Costa Rica. While not quite as new as Cima, Clinica Catolica has a reputation for very good care and friendly and accommodating staff. Also, the prices are less than Cima’s.
