New
breasts, a new nose, or a tucked tummy
(for a fraction of what
you’d pay in the United States)

Budapest
is one of the best places in the world to have plastic surgery. A strong
dollar, modern medical facilities, and inexpensive prices to begin with
mean you can have common procedures, such as laser treatment, collagen
injections, liposuction, breast augmentation, nose surgery, and facelifts,
done for much less than what you’d pay in the United States…40%-70% less,
in fact.
The care you
receive here is some of the best in the world. Plus, with the money you
save, you can pamper yourself with a three-week vacation at a spa hotel,
where you can soak in luxury, massages, mineral baths, beauty salons, pools.
The surgical facilities in Budapest rival any I’ve seen in the States.
The doctors
While I was
there recently, I met with Dr. Gusztav Gulyas, the president of the Hungarian
Society of Plastic of Plastic Surgeons. The Society, with 123 members,
is an active member of the International Society of Plastic Surgeons, which
also includes the equivalent U.S. medical associations. Dr. Gulyas practices
reconstructive surgery at the National Institute of Oncology and also in
a private practice in a quiet Budapest suburb. He and the other members
at the Institute speak German and English.
I also met
with Dr. Istvan Szemerey, a plastic surgeon with an private practice in
his own office in Mediburg since 1991. He struck me as warm and friendly...like
my family doctor at home. I toured his
state-of-the-art
facility. He speaks English and German, and specializes in breast augmentation,
liposuction, laser rejuvenation, forehead lifts, hair removal, and burn
scar correction, many of which are outpatient procedures with minimal recovery
time. He has privileges at a full service hospital when applicable and
is also a member of the Hungarian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Association
of German Plastic Surgeons, and International Society for Plastic, Reconstructive
and Aesthetic Surgery.
Pampered

For a place
to stay, I recommend the Danubius Hotels, a Hungarian chain. Some of the
Danubius hotels are located in secluded areas of the city. You should have
no problem finding a two- or three-week Spa vacation package for $600 to
$650 per week. Here you can take part in a wellness or weight-loss program,
massage and physical therapy, mineral baths and beauty/cosmetic programs.
If you want familiarity, comfort, rest, and practicality, the five star
Hyatt Regency on Roosevelt (Roosevelt square) is my recommendation. It’s
stylish…and ideally located along the Danube River, and within walking
distance of the city’s best sites. There’s a full-service fitness center
(the Swedish massages are a bargain at $15 dollars for 30 minutes), a swimming
pool, a business center with three Pentium-powered work stations, a highly-efficient
concierge service, a beauty salon, a Malev Hungarian Travel Agency and
Airlines office, a casino, several nice restaurants, and spacious
rooms with multinational cable TV and modem/fax connections. Ask
for a room with a view of the river and the Buda side of the city. My favorite
restaurant in the city is the Merleg on Merleg utca (street), two blocks
from the Hyatt. Here you’ll get an authentic Hungarian meal for two for
less than $20. IL
