In the distance are buildings out of a Graham Greene novel. Graham Greene visited Panama many times and was a close friend of General Omar Torrijos. The presidential palace of Panama still sits in the center of Casco Viejo. While most of the modern functions have been transferred to contemporary buildings in the modern center of Panama City, state functions and decorative affairs are still held in Casco Viejo. In the near future, Casco Viejo will be the pride of Panama and an international
treasure. Would Torrijos be proud? I believe he would be. Greene on the other hand might see it all as a messy intrusion. After all, true decadence should not be tempered with a false patina of order.
