Homage to the Victims, the Living, the Future
A Message From Roger Gallo Regarding Recent World Events - A Message From Roger Gallo Regarding Recent World Events
Images of Sorrow ~ The World Weeps ~ Photos from Around the Globe - Photo Essay - The images included in this photo essay were gathered from the magazine's subscribers all over the world and from Internet resources.  They depict with understated clarity the sorrow felt the world over in the week following the terrorist attack on US citizens and citizens from over 80 other countries who were in New York and Washington D.C. on the morning of September 11, 2001. The photographs also demonstrate the ability of a world of people to stand together united in concern for the welfare of others.  Let peace throughout the world finally reign. We invite all readers to contribute to the contents of these pages by sending their photos as JPEG attachments to the Editor of Escape from America Magazine so they can be shared with others.

An Ex-Ex-Pat ~ Even Cowgirls Get the Blues - Home Home on the Range? - Libby Royster returned to the US after two years as an instructor of English as a foreign language in Madrid, Spain. Those two years were the best, most challenging, of her life, she says. Returning wasn't an easy choice. She left a lot behind. Her observations show that expats can return home, again, but not without leaving much behind. She says, "Life does not end when you come back. You just have to try harder, rage against the known, and mix it up a little. And you can always go back…"

Living Overseas
Top Tips for Expats - Making the Move - Chris Westphal and his family of four moved lock, stock, and barrel to Prague in the Czech Republic. They learned a lot, so much they wrote a book about it. Chris writes, "Most of the millions of U.S. citizens who live abroad are either single people getting a taste of adventure while teaching English abroad, or career expatriates. We fit neither of these categories. What's more, we had no family ties and no cultural ties to the Czech Republic. In fact, we had never even visited the country. If you've ever considered living abroad with your family, here are some of the most important things to keep in mind before you go, while you're there, and when you return.
Putting Wheels on You Dream Wagon - No Fear - Just Do It - Roger Van Parys with wife Carol left the USA for a job assignment in Turkey to oversee a $50 million construction project. They were in for a surprise. In this article, Van Parys tells escapeartists what they learned. Now, years later, Roger is currently serving as a program/country manager for a major international engineering and construction firm. In 38 years of marriage, the couple has managed to spend 10 years overseas. Current plans call for at least another ten years of globe trotting before settling down.

Book Review
Adapter Kit: Belize ~ Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Living, Retiring & Investing In Belize ~ by Lan Sluder - Adapter Kit: Belize - Belize is a favorite of those seeking a calmer lifestyle in close proximity to the wonders of nature.  It's a place where Big Brother isn't looking over your shoulder and you can set your own building codes or own a flock of chickens. It's a place where you can spend the day fishing without trying to keep up with the Jones's. It's also become one of the hottest expatriate destinations in Latin America. In a world that cries out for 'how to' books, a 'how to' book on moving to Belize was sorely needed. That need was recently met by Lan Sluder, with the publication of his Adapter Kit: Belize from Avalon Travel Publishing.

Here are 10 tips for weathering your hunt. by By Rose Marie Burke - writing from Paris.

Unique Travel
Touring the South of France - Paris to Vichy, the Cevennes, Arles, the Camargue - Out-of-the-Way Places in the South of France - Linda Thalman from Paris In Sites Newsletter discovers great places to wine, dine, shop, and taste the culture that is the South of France. She and her traveling companion, Pierre, are ahead of the pack in this article that takes you to the best known and the least known places of
Arles and Vichy. They beat the tourist season and got great deals.  She writes, "Zooming down the auto route on the last lap home we knew we wanted to explore more of France. Treasures await you. Don't miss them."
Warm Milk and Closed Windows - Ethiopia!!! ~ Take Me Home Toto! - As a Peace Corps volunteer recently returned from Ethiopia, Gina Perfetto’s stories are varied. She has had authentic human interaction in foreign cultures as the following story well illustrates. The story records an encounter with an irate passenger on a bus in Ethiopia. Gina writes from the hip and tells it like it is: of dusty friends on a back road to nowhere, of dominating males in an archaic society, of a longing for logic and sense ... a return to sensibility.

Editor's Note
"Bali Ha'i, will whisper, On the wind of the sea.
Here am I, your special island. Come to me, Come to me."
Rodgers and Hammerstein II

Once upon a time there was joy, there was song, there was perfect harmony... it was 1958, the movie South Pacific was on the screen, and waltzing was in everyone's heart.

Over the last 50 years, America has undergone many changes since the days of consensus politics and Kennedy's Camelot. The process of change is evolution, and the changes that have occurred have bettered the world. The world will get better, yet, but the elements of war must give way to the elements of peace.

Those elements of war were again reiterated last week by the Secretary General of the United Nations. Kofi A. Annan said the elements of war have remained the same throughout  recorded history ... they are power, discrimination, and greed.

A global consensus of humility, acceptance, and sharing are the elements of global peace.

We, as a global community, must endeavor to make these elements a way of life. Only then will factions of outlying extremists bent on destruction, mayhem, and the annihilation of human life be swallowed up by the good inherent in all humanity.

Thomas Paine, the great American patriot and clear thinker, the man who first proposed and first wrote the impressive words, "the United States of America," said it best in the 18th century, and says it best in the new millennium:

"Independence is my happiness, and I view things as they are, without regard to place or person; my country is the world, and my religion is to do good."    Thomas Paine

In this issue of Escape from America Magazine, we bring you a photo essay of images from around the world of people caring for others in time of trouble and sorrow. A commentary by Libby Royster recounts her desire to return home to the United States of America after two years living and working abroad in Madrid, Spain.

Chris Westphal tells us how he moved his family of four, lock, stock, and barrel to Prague in the Czech Republic. He has pointers on how to make your move successfully. In a similar article on setting aside the jitters and just doing it, Roger Van Parys with wife Carol left the USA for a job assignment in Turkey. They're still on the move, and enjoying life.

Roger Gallo reviews a new "how to" book entitled, Adapter Kit: Belize. The book tells you everything you ever wanted to know about living, retiring, and investing in Belize.

Rose Marie Burke gives us 10 tips on how to land a job in Paris, France. If you've another destination in mind, check out the International Jobs Marketplace, the best search tool on the Internet for working abroad.

The King and I ~ Lost in Fez - Mazing it in Morocco - J. Marcia Night has lived and worked in virtually every corner of the world. She recentlty visited Morocco. "Hopelessly lost, unable to find my way through the maze as the light is becoming dimmer, I search for a way out from amongst the ancient medieval structures that seem to go on forever, perched along cobblestone streets. Houses have closed their shutters, and the deserted alleyways are beginning to fill me with a sense of intrigue mixed with awe; a bit of fear is admittedly beginning to creep in. It is my first evening in the city of Fez. The King arrives tomorrow."
