What does "Escaping" really cost? ~ The Impact of Personality and Personal Tastes - Click Here - In her second installment of escaping the rat race north of the Rio Grande, Sandy Caputo prosaically emphasizes the associated costs of living abroad within the context of wants and needs. She writes, "It was during my last planned five-week immersion back into the world of advertising and public relations in Tucson that my fiancé prevailed upon me to agree to allow him in on my adventure. While alone, I may be frugal, with him I become a lot more open to an if it feels good, do it attitude. In my year and a half of escapist living, I’ve lived cheaply and lived well. Now, there's a new version of living well in Mexico." It's still cheap, but not so cheap.

Editor's Note
You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime,
you just might find you get what you need.

hhh ... the DC3, the twin engine piston prop built by McDonnell Douglas and the flagship of Trans Texas Airlines until the early seventies and TTA became Texas International.
n flights from Houston into Mexico, pilots would sometimes drop to 200 feet once they'd left US airspace. We'd hug the Mexican coast all the way to Vera Cruz. No need for onboard, sophisticated navigational equipment. Just follow the coastline. That's all we needed.
mazing what we could see at that altitude ... miles and miles of driftwood beaches, the occasional coastal two-laner and a maybe a car, gilded fishing boats bobbing in the sea at sunset, the faces of people. The DC3 didn't have TV.
t the end, we'd land on the Vera Cruz tarmac, debark into a cool sea breeze, and walk to the terminal as the sun disappeared behind swaying palms. It was a far cry from Houston in more ways than one.  Away at last, away at last.
he means of transportation may have changed, but the destinations are the same. And, so are our needs ... time, space, and a chance to live our lives day by day. Every moment lived with meaning. Every moment remembered in total clarity, a kind of self-realization.
his issue of Escape from America Magazine brings you articles from people who have escaped their illusive wants and satisfied their real needs. Some are homesteading exotic wilderness, some are doing creative things in towns and cities, some are on-the-road in far-away places. All have realized it is possible to get what you need. All you have to do is try.
ivert your attention ... look up at the big sky. Flying among those bellowing white cumulus clouds is a DC3 on its way to a land of time and space where everything has real meaning, a place filled with sequential moments of total clarity. It's waiting for you. It's always been waiting for you. You can get what you need ... if you try. It's easier than you might think.

Revelations from a different kind of travel - Click Here - Phillip Ghee  is a self-described gypsy and sometimes Pharmacy Technician. What makes his stories uncommon are their humorous, sometimes mystical, and sometimes there aspect of self-discovery in the face of real or imagined conflict. Phillip writes, "We clearly choose our own paths, but if we are insightful enough to interpret the sign posts placed along those paths, we may find some interesting and perhaps some mystical manifestations along the way. At different points throughout my life, people have said to me, 'Look for the answer and you will find it.' I'd decided to make my next trip without a question."
Backpacking Aboard the Train to Djibouti: Rounding out the World as it is - Click Here - Kirk Melcher and  Maren Stoltenberg lived in Germany until about a year ago. They decided to put jobs on hold and see the world. This article finds them on a train in a very different land. They write, "This trip is not to find ourselves, or find the secrets of life. We just have the urge to experience something new and adventurous. The landscape in Djibouti was mostly barren and uninhabited. Once in a while, we would see a small village or a shepard with his goats. The houses were mostly made of piled up stones and thatched roofs like a thousand years ago. The whole train ride, Kirk did not really sleep, he was nervously watching the bags, especially where the laptop was. Every time we stopped, the local kids jumped onto the train. They seemed always interested in our bags.  Maren was able to sleep for short sections of the trip. Evening, the train got pitch dark."
