Living Overseas
Live in Armenia ~ a place of culture, history, good people, and low cost of living - Click Here - Raffi Kojian writes, "Although Armenia probably does not cross the mind of the average American very often, those considering retirement or life abroad would do well to consider all this first Christian nation has to offer. With an incredibly low cost of living, a variety of climates, choice of city or country life, many sites to visit, virtually zero crime and one of the world's most hospitable people, it has much to offer anyone. As part of the Soviet Union, Armenia was one of the most prosperous and advanced parts of the entire communist world.   Now, with independence and a depressed economy, it offers a chance to live in a Western city for very little money."
Musings on Living in Jakarta - Click Here - Jeannie Fairfax writes, "I live in a distinctly Indonesian neighborhood, or, "kampung."  And, although bordering Jalan Sudirman, one of Jakarta's largest, most important thoroughfares, here in "Ben-Hill" (Bendungan-Hillerman) I can safely wander the curving, crooked paths day or night and feel far away -- in another world from the city." And with keen wit and intuitive observation she tells about the push cart vendors selling fruits, vegetables, dinners, houseplants, herbs, and about other people who make noise in front of her house.

Unique Travel
The Mood of Southeast Asia - Click Here - Harold Stephens returns to Escape from America Magazine with an excerpt from his novel, Return to Adventure: Southeast Asia. Stephens writes, "There are images so powerful you cannot forget them. The sounds that came to me, at first, were inconsequential, until I minded them. When you sit there long enough, you wonder if your senses are deceiving you. I heard, very faintly, the echo of a gong somewhere far off. A gong in the forest! In an instant more, it was clearer, and louder, and mingled now with faraway voices. Then came the sound of a flute, and another, and more gongs. I watched them grow from fuzzy silhouettes into focus, like a camera zooming in on its subject. I could see them clearly now, all wearing sarongs, white sarongs, and around their waists were scarlet cummerbunds fastened with rich buckles carved in gold."
TWILIGHT Zone - Click Here - Teacher, missionary, screenwriter, Maurice Blaise tells of his experiences in Liberia, Africa. This two page article written in descriptive detail tells of human strife and love of life on the dark continent. Blaise writes, "Each

"We are all guilty of crime, the great crime of not living life to the fullest, but we are all potentially free. We can stop thinking of what we have failed to do and do whatever lies within our power. What those powers that are in us may be, no one has truly dared to imagine. That they are infinite we will realize the day we admit to ourselves that imagination is everything. Imagination is the voice of daring." - Henry Miller

morning, between five and twenty containers of yellowish river water greeted them at liturgy. The villagers believed in the efficacy of prayer. Peter's hand no longer shook. He quickly dropped the host on her withered tongue. She was the third and last recipient, from a total congregation of seven. Turning, he ascended the altar's three steps. A rooster, outside the doorless, ocean entrance, lined with large yellow and red hibiscus, greeted the rising sun with a startling screech. As she receded, he returned to his thoughts. No, it wasn't loneliness, male hormones, or friendship that had driven him to seek out this Mona Lisa."

Tax Time with an Overseas B&B - Click Here - Ron Winkles and his wife run a Bed and Breakfast establishment in the Czech Republic. They spend about six months of each year in the US and six months in the Czech Republic. Ron writes, "Our return on investment has run about 5 to 8 percent annually, and we have had a great time making a little more than stateside CD rates while earning a nice tax write off. I was audited once by the IRS, the agent was curious and could not believe a retired couple earning $55,000 a year could afford to live in America and own a villa in Europe. Jokingly, I told him we saved money by not shopping in Wal-Mart."

Classified Advertisements
Success Story Continues! - Click Here - Due to popular demand we are now posting Classified Advertisements in this and all future issues of Escape From America Magazine.  We wanted to create a low cost way for EscapeArtists to advertise, and for other EscapeArtists to make contact with their services, products, ideas, real estate and escape routes. For those of us who spent countless hours peering through the classified sections of magazines like Mechanics Illustrated or similar classified sections, a classified section is like looking through a collectable store for those surprises that make the hunt a pleasure as great the discovery. This is the fifth issue featuring the classified.  If reader feedback is any indication the classifieds are a resounding success.
