South
Korea as a Potential Expat Haven - Click
Here - Compared to
other destinations around the world, South Korea has been overlooked
as a destination for those looking for alternatives to life in North America.
Most expatriates know about Japan, Thailand, and the Philippines—but few
have made an effort to settle in South Korea. Those who choose to expatriate
to South Korea can take advantage of opportunities in the following areas:
business and consulting, education and training, and, of course, the Internet.
And, retired professionals and retired military personnel are living quite
happily here.
Getting
a Domestic Helper: Employing and Managing a Necessity - Click
Here - Margaret Short Sierakowski has written
a book about hiring a domestic helper. Anyone who has lived abroad
for any length of time has probably had a maid or two, but choosing the
right maid can be a real challenge. The editor of this webzine has
been known to go through as many as two maids a year. The author writes,
"Even people who are perfectly level-headed in the office strangely find
themselves at a loss when they have to hire full-time domestic help for
their homes." This article, taken by permission from Sierakowski's book,
The
Guide to Employing and Managing a Live-in Maid, offers some good tips
in hiring maids abroad.

Idea to Reality: The Story of Expatboxes Start-up - Click
Here - Four expat escape artists from England band together
and form Expatboxes.com, a new internet site e-commerce company based in
the heart of Devon, England. The company went online in November
2000. Founder Susan Ubl has lived abroad for 20 years. Susan says,
“After returning to the UK five years ago I have been constantly asked
by all my expat friends to send them various essential things they miss
from home!" This is the story of their start-up, a feat easily accomplished
with a little of that ol' British fortitude and ingenuity.

Here - Steeping back through time, the author, recounts
the events of a short trip to Cuba -- his fifth. "Though recovering, my
energy level was hovering around zero plus 2 or so. I told my girlfriend
I would pay her plane ticket to come to Havana from Santiago de Cuba, but
this was tantamount to telling a North American girl in Los Angeles that
her lover from Europe had arrived, but she'd have to travel to New York
in order to see him! All this was compounded by the fact that Cubans
aren't allowed to just travel about at will, but Havana is starting to
shape up. In the next couple of years, I guess, it'll be looking
a lot more like it did in the old capitalist glory days." photos by Håkan

Lonesome Donegal: Travels in Dunfanaghy, Ireland - Click
Here - Donegal, the wind-swept
and rugged northernmost province of Ireland, is arguably also
Ireland’s most beautiful region. A stark and serene beauty
pervades the barren fields and rocky hills that make up the
majority of Donegal. The author writes, "Legs aching from the hilly ride,
a firm wind tearing through the clear autumn sky, I saw an impressive feature
of the Celtic past -- one of the high, rounded ‘Viking signal-towers’ utilized
in the 8th century to watch for maurauding Norsemen. All alone on the edge
of the world, with the waves pounding off of the black crags
and no sign of human existence save for this one forgotten tower, I felt
supremely at peace with the world."

A
Painful Visit - Click
Here - This article chronicles an emigrant's experiences
at a medical clinic and questions the high price of medical care in the
US, compared with his home country of Poland. "As an old Polish saying
goes," writes Ryszard Krasowski, "The further in, the deeper. I had sunk
so deep I felt I'd been swallowed up by a sea of questions. I'd had
complete confidence in the clinic, so when the doctor proposed surgery,
my only concern was where I would find the money to pay for it. Why
did he tell me I had to have surgery if I didn't need it? Why did I have
to pay more for the first visit if I wasn't sure if I would have to come
back for a second visit? Maybe I'd choose to go to a different doctor.
When I was going to pay a doctor a visit in Poland, I wasn't afraid of
it. Here, in America, I am scared to death. I am scared to death, not because
I have a health problem to solve, but because the visit makes me sick even
more." All oil paintings are by the author.

Here - Due to popular demand we are now
posting Classified Advertisements in this and all future issues of Escape
From America Magazine. We wanted to create a low cost way for EscapeArtists
to advertise, and for other EscapeArtists to make contact with their services,

countless hours peering through the classified sections of magazines like
Mechanics Illustrated or similar classified sections, a classified section
is like looking through a collectable store for those surprises that make
the hunt a pleasure as great the discovery. This is the fifth issue featuring
the classified. If reader feedback is any indication the classifieds
are a resounding success.
