Living Overseas
An Escape Artist finds True Escape on Isla Margarita - Click Here - Terry Bannon found true escape on the Isle of Margarita off the Venezuelan Coast where he could have been satisfied just sipping coconut milk under a swaying palm sitting on the cool swept sands of this Caribbean island. Instead, he and his escape artist friends decided to have a little fun. The Mosquito Coast Bar and Grill is a laid back place enjoyed by locals, tourists, and yachties, worldwide; it's mentioned in several guidebooks to the Caribbean, and it was named the region's best disco by Rum and Reggae. The good life comes to escape artists who act now.
The Meeting Place on the Mekong Riviera - Click Here - A quick surf through the Mekong Riviera website and it was clear we'd found the survivors of Coppola's Apocalypse Now some 30 years later.  We'd also confirmed the existence of seasoned expats of the Rick's Place in Casablanca vein living in Thailand. After an hour of browsing, we'd discovered a uniquely esoteric package of resources for expat interests in Laos and Thailand. The Meeting Place, adjacent to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, is the expat hangout in that region of Southeast Asia.  It's a place to learn the ends and outs of Thailand and Laos.

Overseas Jobs
An Introduction to Living and Teaching in
Bangkok - Click Here - Right now the English
Language industry is booming in Thailand, and Bangkok is awash with language schools both big and small. There is absolutely no reason why any native English speaker need spend more than a week or two finding a job suitable for him or her. Currently, only top-notch institutions hire from abroad and the best place to land a job is in the city itself. Almost every issue of the Bangkok post carries at least two or three advertisements for language teaching positions and even those schools stipulating qualifications/experience necessary are realistic enough to compromise if the applicant seems reliable and smart.

Volunteer Vacations - Click Here - It's 6 a.m. in Bansko, a farm village at the foot of Bulgaria's Rila mountains. Joulia, the 20-year-old Bulgarian leading this workcamp, wakes her twelve volunteers for a breakfast comprised of banitza, homemade cheese pastries, and milk so fresh it's still warm. The dirty dozen is bleary from a late night of plum brandy and dancing in Bansko's disco. Every summer, 33,000 people leave their countries for parts unknown. Their destinations are any one or several of over 2,200  workcamps scattered over 90 countries, from Argentina to Zimbabwe.  Some will work with farmers in the fields, others with children in the inner cities. By volunteering their time and money to help distant neighbors, all share the common goal of global peace and responsibility.

Unique Travel
On The Road - - Budoia To Budapest - Click Here - For travelers who miss the pre-EU border checks and passport stamps as souvenirs, a trip to the edge of the Balkans should satisfy their nostalgia.  On a recent spur-of-the-moment, 5 day soggiorno intended to just explore the northeast corner of Slovenia, we decided to keep on going.  Budapest isn't that far.  The following are some road tips gleaned from making a 1500 km. odyssey into, around, and out of the Magyar Zone.
Steam Train Excursions to Roll Again in Guatemala - Click Here - The much anticipated arrangement to provide narrow gauge Train Excursions on a weekly basis to Guatemala's growing tourism sector has become a reality.  It's a feat that not many could have accomplish.  The 52 year old "Guatemala Choochoo" is not being deterred from running "El Tren Alegria" and even plans to do so daily. Steam engine 205, a Baldwin 282 steamer built in 1948, was returned to service.
Through the Looking Glass -- A Madras Indian Living in the States Visits Kuwait - Click Here - Pradeep Selvakumar discovers the culture of this oil rich Islamic nation and the way others look at the US from abroad. There are no taxes in Kuwait, living expenses are few, and only Kuwaitis are allowed to own businesses and property.  At the mall, he got his first indication that Kuwait isn't as conservative as most people probably think. The lingerie on the mannequins are as kinky as any he'd ogled in Victoria's Secret magazines. The movie "Speed" was on TV, and someone was asked if "things like that" happen in the US. He said that life in the US was pretty boring, actually. Then they wanted to know if he owned a gun . . . .
Classified Advertisement Section ~ Click HereSuccess Story Continues! ~ Due to popular demand we are now posting Classified Advertisements in this and all future issues of Escape From America Magazine.  We wanted to create a low cost way for EscapeArtists to advertise, and for other EscapeArtists to make contact with their services, products, ideas, real estate and escape routes. For those of us who spent countless hours peering through the classified sections of magazines like Mechanics Illustrated or similar classified sections, a classified section is like looking through a collectable store for those surprises that make the hunt a pleasure as great the discovery. This is the fifth issue featuring the classified.  If reader feedback is any indication the classifieds are a resounding success.
