The
Road To Charlie's House - Living On An Island - Isla Taboga - Click
Here - Sea breezes circulate through the open shutters
facing the sea. The opposite end of the house has veranda-like balconies
that hang over the street. The verandas provide a restful place to sit
and view the village with its narrow winding footpaths and colonial architecture.
The village is nestled against a lush green tropical hillside and the footpaths
meanander like a labyrinth up through the village and into the surrounding
jungle. The house also has a basement floor which leads out into a garden
at the rear of the house. In the garden there are lemon and orange
trees as well as the ancient foundations of a long forgotten structure,
the stone remains of which stick up through the riot of bougainvillea,
jasmine and wild hibiscus and give an effect like that of an abandoned
sculpture garden gone crazy with flowers.
Discovering
Panamania - Living On An Island In Panama - Realizing A Dream - Click
Here - Isla Taboga, like many of Panama’s islands,
is a city boy’s answer to island living. Fourteen miles off the coast
of Panama City, within sight of the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal,
Tabogans are never far from the amenities and services of the most metropolitan
city in the Americas between Mexico City and Caracas, Venezuela.
It’s only a one-hour ferry ride to the city, and the boats depart the Tabogan
pier four times a day. I’m a commuter.
Sunday
in the City: An Early Morning Run - Click
Here - Take an early morning run through the streets
of Rome. Alan Epstein takes us through Rome as few others have the ability
to do. His book "As The Romans Do" is a book every intended and current
expatriate will want to read. Alan and his family live in Rome and
make it abundantly clear that they intend to stay. This fine sketch of
Rome is rendered all the more dynamic by the excellent photographs of Diane
Epstein.
Emory King Talks About
Retirement In Belize - Click
Here - The name Emory King is probably recognized
by more people in Belize, (and thousands of people abroad), than any other
except the Right Hon. George Price, the Father of Belize, and Hon. Said
Musa, the current Prime Minister. King arrived in Belize in
1953 when the yacht he was on crashed onto the reef at English Caye. From
that day to this he has been talking and writing about the wonderful country
of Belize. If you want to move to Belize, the half dozen or so books
by Emory King are required reading.
Granada
- Nicaragua’s Grandest City - Click
Here - One more thing: If the old Spanish colonial structures
in Granada appeal to you as much as they appeal to me…you can buy one for
$80,000 to $100,000 (it’ll need a lot of work)…or you can spend as much
as $200,000. A few years ago, these places sold for $40,000 or $50,000,
or less. The trouble is there aren’t many of them. The city burned in 1856
and was rebuilt according to the same plan. Most of the colonial-style
houses are 150 years old. You can count on your fingers those that date
back more than 400 years. From The Best of International Living -
Slovenia:
Old Europe at its Best - Click
Here - Slovenia feels the way Europe did 30 or
40 years ago, when life was slower and more civilized. The capital, Ljubljana,
often compared to Paris and Prague, is more manageable and relaxed. The
Kras wine region reminds me of Tuscany before the crowds, and the Slovenians
are aware of the need to limit development.

is an Offshore Newsletter and Website with a whole lot going for it, in

and inadvertant humor.
lso,
those of you who have mockingly criticized my spelling and typographical
vandalism should be satisfied to know that you won't have me to kick around
any more. Although I will still contribute articals to the magazine, you
can now blame the descrpencies on Charlie McElroy and knott on me.

Success
Story Continues! - Classified Advertisement Section in this issue!
-
Click
Here - Due to popular demand we are now posting
Classified Advertisements in this and all future issues of Escape From
America Magazine. We wanted to create a low cost way for EscapeArtists
to advertise, and for other EscapeArtists to make contact with their services,
products, ideas, real estate and escape routes. For those of us who spent
countless hours peering through the classified sections of magazines like
Mechanics Illustrated or similar classified sections, a classified section
is like looking through a collectable store for those surprises that make
the hunt a pleasure as great the discovery. This is the third issue featuring
the classified. If reader feedback is any indication the classifieds
are a resounding success. |

Jobs
On Offshore Oil Rigs - Click
Here - To be successful in seeking offshore employment,
you must be willing to do what average and ordinary people are not willing
to do. First of all, there’s likely to be travel involved with your
job. Ron Edwards, for example, has been at it since 1972 and has worked
alongside Americans, Spaniards, Brazilians, Norwegians, Dutchmen, Mexicans,
Englishmen, Philippines and Australians. He says he’s seen the good, the
bad, and the ugly, but he’s made a lot of friends, as well as a few acquaintances
that were not quite so friendly. His only regret is he didn’t get started
sooner.

Perhentian
Islands - Click
Here - The Perhentian are a cluster of islands off the
East coast of peninsula Malaysia and are only accessible by a one hour
boat trip from the main land. There are two main islands, known as
Besar and Kecil or more simply big and small island. Both rise up
out of the sea covered in a lush tropical rainforest and are fringed by
palm fronted, white sand beaches. Roads are non-existent and
the only way to get around is by the many small boats which ply round the
islands delivering guests, food, and collecting rubbish. Unlike more
famous Asian beaches, the Perhentian islands are remarkably undeveloped
and no high rise hotels, loud bars or concrete disturbs the natural landscape.

Investing
in Korea - Click
Here - A Korean business man spent four years developing
a relationship with a Malaysian. The Malaysian finally agrees to
a joint venture in Malaysia. But, he wants a contract with guarantees
in the event of breach. He also wants to use modern accounting methods
and have a means to keep track of the money. The Korean backs away
making lame excuses. The real reason is that he did not want anything
in writing, especially a contract. His remark was, "You must understand
the Korean way. This is how we do business in Korea. You don't
trust me." He openly displayed insult over the Malaysian distrust.
It was an affront to his honor and reputation. Actually, he would
have disappeared all of the cash and the Malaysian was smart enough to
know what the Korean was about. The deal never happened for good
reason.
The
Looting Of America - How over 200 Civil Asset Forfeiture laws enable police
to confiscate your home, bank accounts & business without trial. -
Click
Here - Police stopped 49-year-old Ethel Hylton at Houston’s
Hobby Airport and told her she was under arrest because a drug dog had
scratched at her luggage. Agents searched her bags and strip-searched her,
but they found no drugs. They did find $39,110 in cash, money she had received
from an insurance settlement and her life savings; accumulated through
over 20 years of work as a hotel housekeeper and hospital janitor. Ethel
Hylton completely document-ed where she got the money and was never charged
with a crime. But the police kept her money anyway. Nearly four years later,
she is still trying to get her money back.
