Plantations
In The South Pacific - Vanish To Vanuatu - Click
Here - There are perhaps three ways to look at
property: As a productive asset, as a speculative holding, or as a lifestyle
proposition. I've spent a fair amount of time and money flying around Vanuatu
to get a grip on property, and I think it's worth considering, possibly
on all three bases.Vanuatu is certainly one of the world’s more beautiful
locations. James Michener used it as the model for Bali Hai when he wrote
Tales of the South Pacific while he was stationed here during WW II. The
French developed numerous copra plantations on the islands over the 100
years up to independence in 1980, and they're still the dominant factor
in today's economy.
Relocation
to Shanghai - Our Move - Click
Here - "My first impression is that Shanghai is BIG,
exotic, with lots and lots of people, bicycles, and cars- but easy to navigate
and relatively cheap to live if I don't attempt maintain a totally american
lifestyle - which I didn't want to do anyway. The few chinese people I
have had contact with after 5 days have been very friendly, helpful, and
tolerant. A surprising number of chinese I have encountered speak some
English. English is taught as a required subject in most schools. Taxis
and bicycles are everywhere. I can get anywhere in the city for 2 or 3
dollars. We won't need a car here."
Expats
In Asia - Bill Heinecke, Entrepreneur Extraordianaire - Click
Here - Excerpted from the book, Expats in Asia
by Harold Stephens - "Bill Heinecke is one of the
best known expatriates in Southeast Asia. His father, Roy Heniecke, was
a war correspondent, stationed in Bangkok, where Bill went to high school.
I first met Bill, or I should say when I first saw him, was when he was
still in high school, hanging around the Bangkok World newspaper selling
ads for a harebrained project he had. That was in 1966 and I was a reporter
for the World at the time. It wasn't long after that that Bill's father
kicked him out of the house. Bill had graduated from high school but he
didn't want to go to college. His father gave him an ultimatum: go to college
or get a job. Bill didn't wanted to do either." by Harold Stephens

America Magazine. We've grown from
our humble beginnings to a magazine
with almost 24,000 subscribers.
(We're growing by 1,000 new
subscribers per month) We get a lot
of positive feedback and we're happy
about that. We're glad you like the
magazine and we never give up trying
to make it better. We depend on
your feedback and we listen closely
to what you have to say. We try to
make the magazine a publication that
provides real value and real ideas.
We are willing to take risks. It is
clear to us that there is too much
slag on the internet. No one minds
mining for quicksilver, but if
there's too much slag it makes the
effort to extract the worthwhile too
much of a tiring process. We don't
publish just to make ourselves
heard, we publish to provide
content. Content is tough to come
by. This month we focus on Asia and
the Pacific, we're pretty happy with
the issue, we hope you are too.

The
North Coast Of The Dominican Republic - Click
Here - John Schroder, our Dominican Republic Guru recently
took a trip along the North Coast of the Dominican Republic and brought
back a report. He writes, "We hear that local studio apartments in Cabarete
are renting for the equivalent of US$ 225 per month and “regular” apartments
for about US $ 400. Also, some property bargains may be found in
small farms or properties east of Cabarete in Gaspar Hernandez and the
areas on the way to Rio San Juan (possibly less than US$ 20,000 for a small
farm or piece of land)."

Story! - Classified Advertisement Section in this issue! -
Click
Here - Due to popular demand we are now posting Classified
Advertisements in this and all future issues of Escape From America Magazine.
We wanted to create a low cost way for EscapeArtists to advertise, and
for other EscapeArtists to make contact with their services, products,
ideas, real estate and escape routes. For those of us who spent countless
hours peering through the classified sections of magazines like Mechanics
Illustrated or similar classified sections, a classified section is like
looking through a collectable store for those surprises that make the hunt
a pleasure as great the discovery. This is the second issue featuring the
classified. If reader feedback is any indication the classifieds
are a resounding success. |

Paddling
Fiji's Kadavu Island - Click
Here - "Paddling to the edge of the lagoon's reef, I
looked over the side of the kayak. I had the uncanny feeling that I was
scuba diving. Acres of staghorn coral reached for the surface like millions
of deer antlers; countless tiny, florescent blue and green fish darted
among the antlers. Scores of purple-blue starfish lay like a handful of
jewels strewn across the sandy bottom. A large school of flying fish whisked
past. We lazily passed a few tiny, deserted islands ringed with powdery
white sand beaches and coconut-laden palms. I would given anything to set
up house on one of them." Join Melissa McCoy on a Fiji Kayak expedition.

Want You To Be Free - Harry Browne for President - Click
Here - The majority of expats we know prefer "none of
the above" to voting for an tyrant like Bush or and idiot like Gore. However,
if you're determined to vote and you believe that it makes a difference,
we'd like to make a recommendation. - "George W. Bush, Al Gore, Pat Buchanan,
and Ralph Nader are arguing over one basic issue: which one is best qualified
to run your life? Which one knows best what kind of school your child should
attend? Which one knows how your health - insurance company should treat
you? Which one knows best how to organize the economy, determine how much
of your own money you should be allowed to keep, and decide what is a proper
way for you to live? I am running because I don't believe they are
capable of running your life. I don't believe I am capable of running your
life. I believe only you know best how to run your life." - Harry Browne

Has A New Search Engine - Click
Here - We now have a search engine. Why so long
to build one, you might ask. Our website is a directory with various
categories and a standard search engine would not do. We had to build
a data-base driven search engine that searched by categories and topics.
A fuzzy search engine wouldn't work for our website. We have to enter
each topic into the database by hand. As you might imagine this is one
heck of a job, but we believe the end results are going to very worthwhile.
It's now on our home page only, going through beta testing and being added
to on a daily basis. Try it out, let
us know what you think. Your comments are important to us. We
will begin to add links to exterior websites within the next month or so.
At this point it provides links to our own website only.
