In The Shetland Islands: The Most Northerly Part of the U.K. - Click
Here - Occasionally you can buy something for as little
as GB£16,000, though it will probably need some work. UK properties
are probably physically smaller that US ones I believe, but bigger ones
occasionally come on the market, consisting of an old stone-built Manse
or Dwelling house of some past Laird (landowner). The unusual occasionally
becomes available, an island or a lighthouse property, though these are
rare nowadays.

a shipping container can be turned into. The finished product is
amazing! You can use this concept to turn a shipping container into
a portable dwelling that you can cheaply ship anywhere in the world.
It's sort of like global backpacking with your own house. Colin provides
details on how to build one yourself.

In Our Midst - What It's Like To Live In Medellin, Colombia - Click
Here - Amit Gilboa, wrote a book about a rare
breed of expats in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In his book, 'Off the Rails in
Phnom Penh,' Gilboa stated that a lot of the expatriates who love the exceedingly
dangerous excitement of Cambodia also end up living in Colombia and liking
it. Peter Van Dijck not only lived in Medellin, Colombia, he has developed
an excellent website about living in Colombia. The website has a
discussion board plus a lot of photos & information about living in
Colombia. Nicole Randolph decided to inteview Peter and find out
why anyone would want to live there and what the conditions are like for
a foreigner living in Colombia. Interview of Peter Van Dijck by Nicole

Welcome to our latest issue.
We sincerely hope that everyone reading this magazine restarts their life
abroad before it's too late. According to a very recent Gallup poll 5.7
million Americans believe that they have been abducted by extraterrestrials
at one time or another. ...EscapeArtist recommends that you escape
from America before you inadvertently become yet another gruesome abduction
statistic. Some abductees reported being returned to earth unable to live
in any other country but the USA - unable to do anything other than watch
T.V. and unable to eat anything other than hamburgers. It sounds like a
plot. |

Retirement Healthcare Insurance Considerations - Click
Here - One of the primary considerations when thinking
of international or overseas retirement is healthcare and medical insurance
cover. Many USA citizens already are very familiar with medical and
health insurance at home but have little knowledge of how such plans work
overseas, or even of the standard of medical facilities, hospitals, doctors
and so on, in the location they are considering for retirement. by J

is New Again In London - Click
Here - "It's got hallucinogenic properties," Matt says
holding a flame to the silver teaspoon. A lava-like stream runs into the
glass of clear liquid Absinthe. "Robin you may do the honors of the first
drink but you must do it in one swig." Everyone's favorite expat
writer, Robin Sparks is in London drinking absinthe, learning what London
has to offer as a ciry to live in and what absinthe has to offer as a hallucinogenic...

How
I found my perfect retirement home in Quito: a three bedroom house for
$20,000 - Click
Here - The first thing I noticed about Quito was the
absence of bugs. They always come after me before my wife Lorna, and when
I didn’t see any, I was encouraged about our decision to visit this place.
We were looking for a retirement home... We have read with great
interest Gary Scott’s articles in International Living. We were intrigued
by the prices, and by the descriptions of the countryside and the people.
We did some research on our own, and the more we looked, the more we liked
what we saw.

Travels
In Cuba - Iowa Yankee in King Castro's Court - part III - Click
Here - Kirk Stephan is the sort of person who
asks hard questions and seeks honest answers - He doesn't sugar-coat the
world and hand us answers that we already know. He takes the time
to look for the reality beneath the veneer. His writing and observations
are reminiscent of Andrei Codrescu. If Cuba and the Cuban people
have a false pitina that misleads us we should want to learn the reasons.
Kirk
Stephan is willing to show us the reasons. He is both willing to mock
Cuba and to love Cuba - to respect Cuba, and to look at Cuba's faults.
He isn't a typical gringo tourist, he's an experienced traveler willing
to take risks, but he'd be the last one to deny that in Cuba, part of the
attraction is the high and ongoing level of culture shock. Traveling
to Cuba is like going back in time fifty years into the past.
Prague
for the conciously inconspicuous unAmerican traveler - Click
Here - "The Prague party scene is a movable feast. When
the sun disappears behind Prague castle, local hipsters and young tourists
from around the world converge on the center of Prague, transforming it
into a massive playground for the drunk and romantically inclined. There
are even cafes where, dressed in a yappie uniform, one could sip cappuccino
(or if you want to really look cool, Absinthe) and write bad poetry. I
enjoyed intensely staring up at a corner of the ceiling, pretending to
ponder the meaning of my Kafkaesque existence and actually listen to other
yappies, donned in their yappie uniforms, discuss the influence of Paris
on the writings of Henry Miller and Ernest Hemmingway." David J. Farley
tells us how to visit Prague without looking like another American tourist.
The
Offshore Divorce: Getting Unhitched in a Hurry - Click
Here - Wondering about getting divorced in the
Dominican Republic? John Schroder tells us that, "if this
is your interest, you are in close company with the rich & famous."
The legislation permitting a special "3 day divorce is used by many rich
and wellknown people seeking a 'quicky' divorce." The legislation was codified
into law in 1971, and it is a booming business for local law firms in the
D.R. One law firm processes 8 divorces per week for US citizens,
and that is just one single law firm. It should be noted that this special
kind of divorce is only available to non-Dominican residents or citizens.
That is to say that there is separate legislation that cover the divorce
of a local resident or citizen, and in some cases, clients may in fact
prefer to pursue this if they are involved with a contested divorce action.

Using
The Yap Phone to Place International Calls From Abroad - Click
Here - Where I'm living a telephone call to the USA is
$2.50 a minute. Other international calls are even more expensive.
This means that each hour spent on the telephone to the USA cost me $150
- way more than I want to pay. I had tried early models of the Net2Phone
Phone Jack, but the sound quality left a lot to be desired. Then
I heard about the new Yap phone system and I decided to try it. What I
bought was the Yap Jack - It allows you to make telephone calls
over the internet without using a computer. You do need an ISP account,
through which you contact the Net2Phone center in the USA. The savings
I've realized are beyond belief and the sound quality is much better than
the early technology. I'm more than pleased with what I purchased.
If you live abroad the Yap Jack is the way to make international telephone
calls savings of over 70%.

Three
Days Two Nights - Bill Bonner In Nicaragua - Click
Here - When we first came to Nicaragua a couple of years
ago, the Pacific Coast was almost untouched. We thought it was inevitable
that it would soon become developed. It is too close to the United States...and
too beautiful to be ignored. So we decided to do our own development --
creating a place we could sell and a place that we would like ourselves.

Has A New Search Engine - Click
Here - We now have a search engine. Why so long
to build one, you might ask. Our website is a directory with various
categories and a standard search engine would not do. We had to build
a data-base driven search engine that searched by categories and topics.
A fuzzy search engine wouldn't work for our website. We have to enter
each topic into the database by hand. As you might imagine this is one
heck of a job, but we believe the end results are going to very worthwhile.
It's now on our home page only, going through beta testing and being added
to on a daily basis. Try it out, let
us know what you think. Your comments are important to us. We
will begin to add links to exterior websites within the next month or so.
At this point it provides links to our own website only.
