SPECIFIC NATIONS IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER:

AFGHANISTAN
Afghanistan before War - You Khan - Before the coup, before the Russians invaded, before ensuing tribal conflicts, before the US reprisal against terrorism, Afghanistan was a country on the "Overland Trail."  Many travelers passed though on their way to India or Europe. It was a country, which had not fully entered the twentieth century. It may be true, today. Mr. Ginger made his first trip to Afghanistan in 1976. Since then, he has traveled there on several occasions, the most recent being this year, before the terrorist attacks on NYC and Washington. Ginger's experiences in Afghanistan paint a picture of a people firecly proud of their Asian heritage, and a country where war is no stranger.
The Fierce Afghani Game of  Buskashi - The Afghan Pulse - The ancient game of Buzkashi has been played in northern Afghanistan since the days of Ghengis Khan, the Mongol warrior whose army swept across Asia in the 13th century.  It is a fierce game of competition played on the steppes of Asia by expert horsemen. The chopendoz strive to win at any cost. It is a Machiavellian game, where the end justifies the means and all means are utilized. In centuries past, the game of Buzkashi would begin at daybreak and last till sundown.  The fierce struggle for winning remains. The chopendoz are remarkable horsemen and frenzied competitors, where anything goes. Smashed noses, wrenched shoulders, and shattered thigh bones are not at all uncommon.

Sunset Over Africa - Click Here - “These people live so deep in the forest, that most people don’t even know they exist. Any history book on Madagascar will mention that there are nineteen ethnic tribes in Madagascar but this tribe is never even mentioned. They’re Pygmies and most people have never seen them.” “Yah, but they are a different people than the Ete Pygmies of Zaire,” someone else said. There had just been a quick reference on the radio, but supposedly, many Malagasy know about them.
Sunset Over Africa Part II - Click Here - The second part of a very popular article by Andrew Crone, the first of which appeared in The Escape From America Magazine Volume Two - Issue Number Five. "A seven foot yellow brick wall surrounded the offices. Two tall palm trees and a crumbling red tiled roof were visible from behind the wall. You needed to enter through a grand cast-iron gate and follow the dirt walkway, which was defined by two rows of rocks through the dirt yard. The offices were in a yellow one story building. In front was a verandah with several tall green French doors, each leading to a different office. The paint on everything was chipped and faded."
The Case for an International Venture Fund - Click Here - A friend of a friend of mine was starting a commercial fishing operation based in Africa. He had taken the time to have a proper business plan prepared; complete with his own audited financial statement.  This person was in need of a business loan to complete the purchase of a boat and equipment. He has had 12 years of commercial fishing experience, is familiar with various wholesalers to sell to, and had roughly 30% of his own cash in the deal. He could NOT get this deal done in the US!

ARMENIA
Live in Armenia ~ a place of culture, history, good people, and low cost of living - Click Here -
Raffi Kojian writes, "Although Armenia probably does not cross the mind of the average American very often, those considering retirement or life abroad would do well to consider all this first Christian nation has to offer. With an incredibly low cost of living, a variety of climates, choice of city or country life, many sites to visit, virtually zero crime and one of the world's most hospitable people, it has much to offer anyone. As part of the Soviet Union, Armenia was one of the most prosperous and advanced parts of the entire communist world.   Now, with independence and a depressed economy, it offers a chance to live in a Western city for very little money."

ASIA
Expats In Asia - Bill Heinecke, Entrepreneur Extraordianaire - Click Here - Excerpted from the book, Expats in Asia by Harold Stephens - "Bill Heinecke is one of the best known expatriates in Southeast Asia. His father, Roy Heniecke, was a war correspondent, stationed in Bangkok, where Bill went to high school. I first met Bill, or I should say when I first saw him, was when he was still in high school, hanging around the Bangkok World newspaper selling ads for a harebrained project he had. That was in 1966 and I was a reporter for the World at the time. It wasn't long after that that Bill's father kicked him out of the house. Bill had graduated from high school but he didn't want to go to college. His father gave him an ultimatum: go to college or get a job. Bill didn't wanted to do either." by Harold Stephens

AUSTRALIA
Escape Artist Evaluation of Australia As a Expatriate Destination - Click Here - As pointed out in the book Escape From America, measuring a nation's potential as an expatriate destination by looking only at the level of wages & personal income is foolish. Level of income tells you nothing other than how much is being earned. It doesn't tell you the price of tomatoes, the quality of the schools, nor the level of crime. If you have to put bars on your windows, bus your children 15 miles to a civilized school and eat polluted tomatoes, you've lost income and quality of life  - - Australia is noted for many things, but most of all it is noted for it's excellent quality of life.
Expatriates Build Wealth in Australia - Click Here - The Aussie dollar is at an all time low against the American dollar and the strong Pound Sterling, consequently there is strong purchasing power for Expats and UK residents in Australia. Australia welcomes foreign investment in real estate. Overseas investors can therefore obtain the benefit of freehold title.  To take advantage of this, major developers such as Central Equity apply to the Federal Government Foreign Investment Review Board to gain permission to sell their residential apartments to foreign investors prior to releasing their development to the public.

BELGIUM
Trying to Pick a New Country to Live In - Part Two - Click Here - Last month we looked at the subtleties in making judgments about an expatriate destination.  We saw that while a country like Belgium has excellent schools, high culture, fine art, good food, great beer and all of the amenities we might desire, it doesn't have the open spaces, excellent real estate prices and low population density of a country like Belize.  Which is better? -  Escape From America Editor Roger Gallo provides more wit and wisdom in part two of this inquiry.

Adapter Kit: Belize ~ Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Living, Retiring & Investing In Belize ~ by Lan Sluder - Adapter Kit: Belize - Belize is a favorite of those seeking a calmer lifestyle in close proximity to the wonders of nature.  It's a place where Big Brother isn't looking over your shoulder and you can set your own building codes or own a flock of chickens. It's a place where you can spend the day fishing without trying to keep up with the Jones's. It's also become one of the hottest expatriate destinations in Latin America. In a world that cries out for 'how to' books, a 'how to' book on moving to Belize was sorely needed. That need was recently met by Lan Sluder, with the publication of his Adapter Kit: Belize from Avalon Travel Publishing.

From that day to this he has been talking and writing about the wonderful country of Belize.  If you want to move to Belize, the half dozen or so books by Emory King are required reading.

The advantages of Living Overseas: a new and refreshing way to look at Offshore - Click Here - Edmund J. Pankau writes about the broader meaning of offshore, this time in terms of the real advantages to the ordinary person seeking a lower cost of living, a better quality of life, reasonable and fantastic real estate, lower taxes, and ground floor business opportunities. "In recent years, Central America has become the Florida, California and Arizona of the 1950’s.  Remember when you could buy beachfront property in Florida for a song? When prices in California were dirt cheap?  Well, those days are now in full bloom just a little further south of the border.  The slower paced climate of Central American has awakened to the realization that is can revitalize its economy by becoming the retirement center of the western world. All of the things that made Florida and California boom are now happening in Belize, Honduras and Costa Rica, as is starting to emerge, Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador and Guatemala."

What they didn’t know was that the biggest storm to hit the Caribbean in 500 years would rearrange their plans -- it would kill one of their dearest friends, nearly destroy their catamaran, and cause months-long delays and financial depletion. No one said moving to a third world country would be easy..."
You'd Better Belize It's Better - Click Here - Tim Sheppard and his wife Yumiko took a trip to Belize and ended up buying property there.  Tim says, "I have been looking for my own personal spot in the sun for several years.  The US is too crowded, expensive, and I’m tired of all the damn rules.  I’ve been searching Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua for that great deal.  I’ve been disappointed as I searched from Tela to Trujillo, and from San Juan del Sur to Blue Fields and Isla de Maiz.  Unfortunately, too many people saw “gringo” and thought that meant “mucho greenbacks.”  I love the countries and culture, but the prices have just been too high.  I was surprised that Belize, undoubtedly the most expensive Central American country for day-to-day stuff, had the best deals I’ve found on land."

Their destinations are any one or several of over 2,200  workcamps scattered over 90 countries, from Argentina to Zimbabwe.  Some will work with farmers in the fields, others with children in the inner cities. By volunteering their time and money to help distant neighbors, all share the common goal of global peace and responsibility.

CAMBODIA
Building Self-help in a Cambodian Community - Click Here - On a sweltering February day, balancing unsteadily on a thin strip of wood five meters above ground, I twisted my body enough to accomplish a simple feat: hammering a nail. My small triumph was part of a much larger undertaking—building homes for the poorest of the poor in a threadbare country. After three decades of war and instability, Cambodia, which has experienced horror rivaling anything in history, is on the mend, and the people are cautiously optimistic about the future. Optimism exists because of Tabitha-Cambodia, a nonprofit organization based in Phnom Penh.

The non-resident Canadian Canadian - Click Here - Last month, Escape from America Magazine told about taxes for US citizens working abroad. Canadians have it even better. Tax policies derived from British Commonwealth Laws allow Canadian citizens to receive non-resident status and enjoy no taxes levied obn capital gains and interest accrued outside of Canada. Non-resident Canadian Sam Barsoumian writes, "Unlike US citizens who are forever doomed to file annual taxes, Canadian citizens can elect to become non-residents and forever bid Canada Customs and Revenue Agency farewell. By taking residency in just about any country other than the US, capital gains and interest generated outside of Canada ceases to attract any tax whatsoever. Apart from the tax advantages, taking up residency in other countries allows Canadians to live in a climate of their own choosing and experience a better quality of life for comparatively the same amount of Canadian living expenses. In many cases, the cost of living is far less depending on their choice of country and spending habits."

CAPE VERDE
Cape Properties: Exotic and a Bargain - Click Here - I've come to the conclusion that property in South Africa is now among the best bargains in the world, in both absolute and relative terms. On this trip, I stuck to Jo'berg and the Cape; it's a big country and I simply put myself in the hands of my fairly numerous South African relatives. I can't make any recommendations on Jo'burg property because although it's cheap, I can't see the opportunity, and have no personal interest in it. That's not to say parts of Jo'berg aren't quite nice. - Doug Casey on South Africa.

Buy a Rolls Royce for the price of a Chevy - and other ways to profit from an international lifestyle - Click Here - Often a crashing currency also comes attached with an economic crisis. This creates an even better opportunity. In the case of my Rolls, I took advantage of an English economic crunch (which drove the price of luxury cars down and forced many diehard owners to sell), a weak pound, and a U.S. customs loophole. Three distortion opportunities like this are the best.So talk to a tax attorney experienced in international structures, keep and eye on currency fluctuations (right now the Euro is still relatively weak, although it has moved up in recent weeks, which helps create European bargains), and look for distortions relating to fun things you want to be involved in.

At first I had no refrigeration or electricity, but everyone was fascinated by the wonderful meals prepared over a wood fire with locally grown products, such as yuca, fish, plantains, fruits of all kinds, and coconuts.  Bread was baked on the wood fire. We picked cacao from our own trees, and roasted the beans to make hot chocolate and fudge with coconut milk.

From Santiago de Cuba to Havana in only Three Weeks - Click Here - Linda Thalman is the director of WebFrance International and editor of the Paris In Sites Newsletter. She has traveled extensively. On a recent trip to the land of music, laughter, and rum, she lived Cuba from east to west. Linda  writes, "At the first step out of the Santiago de Cuba airport on Saturday, 12 February, we salsa-ed through a receiving line of costumed dancers moving to the beat of Cuban music. And the beat went on and on throughout our trip from east to west in Cuba. After three weeks of almost no TV -- CNN and even France-2 television are available at the big hotels, no newspapers -- only the Spanish-language national daily Granma, and no Internet -- no Internet cafe anywhere, es bueno!, we found it actually is possible to totally disconnect -- what a fiesta!"
Gaviota, The Last Cowgirl in Cuba - Click Here - This ratiocination of events in Cuba leads me to a bizarre vision of the future: Havana stands very little chance of not becoming another Juarez or Tijuana, with their controlled and horrific professional prostitution, gambling and gangsterism (a lot like present day Russia, too). Historically, this has been the payback for cultures which deny and try to suppress the natural instincts of their peoples.  Kirk Stephan doesn't pull any punches when he writes about Cuba.  Andrei Codrescu would like his writing...  we know we like his writing, but perhaps it's good advice that weaker souls should stay away.
Iowa City Yankee in King Castro’s Court - Click Here - Obviously the situation here on the island was closer to the opposite: Nearly everyone was HIGHLY educated and had had in the past many varying opportunities, cultures, and comfort-levels. This probably was a significant contribution to their becoming what they are: one of the most articulate, bright, and passionate peoples. ...they exhibited daily their tremendous joy in living. Without the comforts which most of the world enjoys (TV, computers, magazines, presidential sex-scandal-entertainments, etc.) they resort to music and dance, poetry and art, dialogue and personal interactions... life as we used to know it.
Iowa Yankee in King Castro's Court - Click Here - Steeping back through time, the author, recounts the events of a short trip to Cuba -- his fifth. "Though recovering, my energy level was hovering around zero plus 2 or so.  I told my girlfriend I would pay her plane ticket to come to Havana from Santiago de Cuba, but this was tantamount to telling a North American girl in Los Angeles that her lover from Europe had arrived, but she'd have to travel to New York in order to see him!  All this was compounded by the fact that Cubans aren't allowed to just travel about at will, but Havana is starting to shape up.  In the next couple of years, I guess, it'll be looking a lot more like it did in the old capitalist glory days." photos by Håkan Rönnblad.

I was audited once by the IRS, the agent was curious and could not believe a retired couple earning $55,000 a year could afford to live in America and own a villa in Europe. Jokingly, I told him we saved money by not shopping in Wal-Mart."
Top Tips for Expats - Making the Move - Chris Westphal and his family of four moved lock, stock, and barrel to Prague in the Czech Republic. They learned a lot, so much they wrote a book about it. We fit neither of these categories. What's more, we had no family ties and no cultural ties to the Czech Republic. In fact, we had never even visited the country. If you've ever considered living abroad with your family, here are some of the most important things to keep in mind before you go, while you're there, and when you return.

Crisis investing in Ecuador: Rock-bottom property prices, fabulous ocean views, and easy living- Click Here - “Ecuador has it all,” I said to the group of adventure-some International Living readers traveling with me to my adopted homeland. “Beauty, convenience, and incredibly low cost. And right now, prices are lower than ever.”   I was having little trouble convincing this crowd. We sat at a cliff-top restaurant and watched the Pacific stretch blue and serene to the horizon. Miles of empty beach lay in our view. And we had just returned from inspecting Mediterranean villas that overlook a sleepy fishing village and the sea (on offer for only $35,000). by Gary Scott - From the Best of International Living
Henshaw in Quito - Click Here - Expat Vernon Henshaw and his wife Lorna moved to Quito, Ecuador, in 1999. Prices have risen, but the cost advantages are still real and there's that sense of freedom he has.  Vernon writes, "We found our new home for about $22,000. A house like ours (2000 sq. ft. in a gated community) will cost about $50 - 60,000 today, but prices are still cheap compared with living in the USA. Our property tax: $38.60, registration of our used car: $18.00; monthly electric bill: $3.50; monthly gas bill: $2.50.  Gasoline costs $1.00 per gallon.  Our maid costs $3.50 per day (3 days each week, and she's a great cook). Most of all, I love Ecuador because of the freedom I feel.  I can do essentially anything I want to, without having to negotiate a plethora of rules and restrictions.  I can make changes to my house without a building permit; I can put in all the glass I want without violating a building code."

As things turned out, I came for a break and stayed for two years. I was seduced by landscape and seascape, by the lure of mythology and romantic legends. But the reality of life in Cornwall turns out to be both more and less than anyone could imagine.

My Secrets to a Lifetime of Making Money in Overseas Real Estate - Click Here - by Gary Scott - If we can now buy a ranch in Argentina (or Uruguay, or New Zealand, or name your spot,)  for ten cents on the dollar of what a similar property inside the United States would cost us, and if we can carry on commerce from anywhere we are, how long do you imagine it's going to take your neighbor to realize the very same thing? Gary Scott tells us more, in an article from the best of International Living.

The Wasteland - From The Daily Reckoning - Click Here - T.S. Cairo
A Place in the Sun: Renting a Flat in Cairo - Click Here - Cairo is an unpredictable city.  It is a place where life moves both quickly and slowly and one must find the rhythm quickly if one wishes to not only survive but to live well. Once one finds a place to live one feels more at ease.  One has a base of operations from which to sally out against the magnificent and ancient streets, which teem and seethe in ways alien to the western mind.  With this information however you should be able to quickly and efficiently locate and rent a flat.

ETHIOPIA
Warm Milk and Closed Windows - Ethiopia!!! ~ Take Me Home Toto! - As a Peace Corps volunteer recently returned from Ethiopia, Gina Perfetto’s stories are varied. She has had authentic human interaction in foreign cultures as the following story well illustrates. The story records an encounter with an irate passenger on a bus in Ethiopia. Gina writes from the hip and tells it like it is: of dusty friends on a back road to nowhere, of dominating males in an archaic society, of a longing for logic and sense ... a return to sensibility.

Operation: Dollar Storm - Click Here - Just six weeks ago, the price of gold reversed its steady decline of the past several years. The European Central Bank (ECB), as well as the central banks of 14 other European countries, announced a moratorium on more gold sales and loans for the next five years.  ...this was just the first shot in war that will force new highs in the dollar price of gold, and make fundamental changes in the balance of economic power between Europe and the US. ~ Hard metal advocate Willy Smith lives in Costa Rica with his wife and three daughters.  In this article he talks to us about our monetary future.

As a Fulbrighter," you don't have to quit your job, sell your house or make any major changes. And you can still cut your tax bill by deducting all related expenses for yourself and the accompanying family members (air fare, travel gear, etc.). One English teacher from Rosemount, Minnesota says that one year as a Fulbright foreign-exchange teacher in Hungary left her so invigorated that she took a leave of absence and a pay cut to stay a second year.

Wandering the Canals & Rivers of Europe - Click Here - I flew into Paris from Seattle by way of Toronto on an Air Canada flight. Not only did Air Canada have the cheapest fare but they allowed me to bring my bicycle as part of my baggage allowance at no additional cost.  It was quite a struggle lugging my bags and the bicycle from the airport into downtown Paris to catch the metro and then the train for my trip to Dijon. From Dijon I had to catch a commuter train for a 40 min ride to the village of St. Jean de Losne, located at the confluence of the River Saone and the Bourgogne canal, where I had left the boat in a marina for the winter.
Wandering the European Canals & Rivers - Click Here - We eventually approached Paris from the west and made our way up the River Seine past the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, under countless bridges, amidst heavy barge traffic to the marina at the Bastille. The trip from Amsterdam to Paris had taken us just under 7 weeks of leisure travel. The Bastille marina has a convenient location in the heart of Paris and costs about $US28/day. After a two week stay in Paris, my daughter & girlfriend left for the States. I continued on south for more than another month finally arriving the end of Sept. at a marina in the village of St. Jean de Losne, just south of Dijon.

FIJI
Living and Working in Fiji - Click Here - When I was reseaching an island to move to, Fiji kept popping up in the top five for cost of living, quality of life and friendliness of the people. But living in L.A. at the time, I knew I wanted a slower pace.  To be on island time.
Paddling Fiji's Kadavu Island - Click Here - "Paddling to the edge of the lagoon's reef, I looked over the side of the kayak. I had the uncanny feeling that I was scuba diving. Acres of staghorn coral reached for the surface like millions of deer antlers; countless tiny, florescent blue and green fish darted among the antlers. Scores of purple-blue starfish lay like a handful of jewels strewn across the sandy bottom. A large school of flying fish whisked past. We lazily passed a few tiny, deserted islands ringed with powdery white sand beaches and coconut-laden palms. I would given anything to set up house on one of them." Join Melissa McCoy on a Fiji Kayak expedition.
Paradise Found on Fiji - There are No Rules - Collin McKenny first had dreams of getting out of corporate America in 1988. The idea of a gold watch to send her off into an unwelcomed retirement, someday, didn't appeal to her. She and her husband wandered the South Pacific, then the Caribbean, then decided Fiji would be their paradise found.  That was 1997 and the year they said good by to the rat race and set about to achieve their dreams. Now, they have a tropical retreat on that beautiful island. Their retreat is called Lomalagi, which means "Heaven" in the Fijian language. Lomalagi has six bungalows, swimming pools with waterfalls, a "playhouse" with pool table & games, a dining pavilion with bar, and a coconut plantation where locals harvest the coconuts. They're living the good life.

Hollywood to Paris: Making the Move Now - From Glitter to Intrinsic Reward - Quarkscrew Jones is the chosen pseudonym for a former executive assistant at a major Hollywood studio. Just before September 11, Quarkscrew decided it was time to return to childhood dreams and escape that madhouse she'd been led to believe was everything. Existence as she knew it no longer sustained her. Deep within the fraz and glitter of Hollywood, she'd begun asking the question we are all asking, "Is this all there is to living? ... On Sept. 11, 2001, we watched  the Twin Towers disintegrate before our eyes, like Snow White's kiss, naptime was over. We felt helpless that day, and despite what the media tries to sell us, we feel helpless now. I want to hear at least one happy story come out of a world like this.  I figure, might as well start with my own.  It is not a crime to be an American, and we shouldn't have to give up our dreams just because someone, somewhere out there doesn't like us. I am living again and I wouldn't trade this feeling for anything."
Intricacies Of Working And Living In Paris - Click Here - I came here the first time and got hooked. Once every few years quickly turned into coming year after year, always staying in the same hotel in the same neighborhood, dreaming about calling that neighborhood home. But the fact that you don't speak French begins to make things interesting. You have to plot how to get from here to there after you figure out where there is. And that means learning how to use Europe's oldest subway system, the Métro. You need to make a phone call, but first you must find out where to buy phone cards, and then where to use them. Where is the laundromat and how do you use it once you get there?

Passion Play In Paris - Click Here - By Robin Sparks - I set out to “know” Paris in my favorite way --  by blending in and pretending to be one of its residents. I negotiated Paris via the Metro. I sipped kirs at Les Deux Maggots (OK, so I did hit one or two tourist spots). At en plein aire cafés I stared unabashedly with the rest of the audience at the street theatre as it strolled past. I learned quickly to pick out the Frenchmen from other European males by the similarity of their narrow noses and lips, wire rimmed glasses, receding hairlines, and thousand dollar suits. I shopped daily at the patisseries and the boucheries and the tabacs and the outdoor markets.  I paraded down the Champs-Elysées adapting the I-Love-Being-A-Woman attitude that French women wear so well.

I take off my glasses, look him in the eye, and say, "Je ne parle pas beaucoup Francais. Parle vous Anglais?" "Un petite peu,"? he says.

"Ménerbes was made famous by Peter Mayle in his tale titled "A Year in Provence," the trials and tribulations of an Englishman and his wife who have set out to retire to an old stone Provençal home in "peace." Tourists flock here now, but the charm remains and we lunched on big beautiful salads in an open terraced restaurant with a view of the surrounding hills and farms. - - Corsica is a perfect blend of France and Italy. The architecture is simpler in style as in Italy, but isn't quite as "laisser faire." The cuisine is a blend of traditional French and pastas and we found the restaurants to serve a good quality for very reasonable prices, about 25% less expensive than dining in Paris."

GERMANY
Backpacking Aboard the Train to Djibouti: Rounding out the World as it is - Click Here - Kirk Melcher and  Maren Stoltenberg lived in Germany until about a year ago. They decided to put jobs on hold and see the world. This article finds them on a train in a very different land. They write, "This trip is not to find ourselves, or find the secrets of life. We just have the urge to experience something new and adventurous. The landscape in Djibouti was mostly barren and uninhabited. Once in a while, we would see a small village or a shepard with his goats. The houses were mostly made of piled up stones and thatched roofs like a thousand years ago. The whole train ride, Kirk did not really sleep, he was nervously watching the bags, especially where the laptop was. Every time we stopped, the local kids jumped onto the train. They seemed always interested in our bags.  Maren was able to sleep for short sections of the trip. Evening, the train got pitch dark."

GREECE
Fire in the Kitchen - Living On A Greek Island - Click Here - A word about this nonuser friendly oven. Most kitchens on Spetses don't have the generous sized ovens we're used to in America. You know, the kind with the big old burners on top, which are great for heating soup and making Jiffy Pop. Then they have a cavernous area which I think you use for baking cookies and roasting things. All I know is, they're hell to clean. And I only know that because every time I moved to a new apartment, I had to clean one. Of course one cleaning was all they usually needed during my tenure, because those frozen pizzas don¹t make much of a mess.

While I had traveled widely in Greece, and had many Greek  friends, I had  never met a Cretan. I was warned by  the mainlander Greeks that Cretans were a little bit dangerous -- ornery, quarrelsome, vindictive  and boorish.  Happily, these stereotypes weren’t true at all -- rather, the people I met during the course of a  year were, like my kindly hosts near Amari, very friendly, curious, and hospitable. The relaxed Cretan lifestyle is well-geared towards those who enjoy sipping coffee in an outdoor café as the hours lazily  pass, or sleeping in the shade of a palm beach."

The beams weighed 100 lbs. per foot and were 6 to 14 feet long.
The Sailing Life On The Río Dulce, Guatemala - Click Here - The Río Dulce is not generally regarded as a place to retire. “That’s because property is pricey. Most people on the river are living on boats. They come and go.” But, having fallen in love with Guatemala and it’s people, Sharon and Big Al decided to stay and build a house boat. Due to the heat and humidity in the Río Dulce area, they felt that a house boat would give them more wide open breezes and the ability to enjoy the beauty of nature. Turning Haiti Into A Tropical Paradise - Click Here - ...in essence, it's possible to transform a hellhole like Haiti into the kind of place you'd want to move to, no matter where you now live, regardless of other considerations. If there were ever a true free market country, the place would be so overrun with rich people that workers now making $1 a day would be in demand at $15 an hour... Doug Casey has a plan to turn Haiti from a basket case into a tropical paradise - Is this just a pipe dream or is it a possible reality?  Doug Casey's reputation is world renown, his expertise is amazing.

HONDURAS
Roatan
Secrets of a Real-Estate Developer ~ “How I built a profitable Roatan resort on a shoestring budget” - Click Here - One of the most important lessons I learned in this project was this: Build your amenities first. For us, this meant the pool…the dock…and the landscaping. You do this because when people come to look at your place they buy into the whole package. If they can see the pool and other amenities in place they know 1) that they will definitely be there and 2) what the place will look like when finished. What I’ve realized is that people are as interested in what their surroundings will look like as they are with what their actual house will look like. [From The Best of International Living]

Global Nomadic Housing For Expatriates ~ Part One - Click Here - Global Nomadic Housing for expats?  Why not?  Design your living space & workshop and take it with you...   Maverick designer Colin Reedy tells us how.  "I felt like I had enough information to start designing. I searched for examples of prior efforts to modify shipping containers for housing.   The companies that sold the containers sometimes made modifications like windows or doors for the contractors to use at construction sites, but nothing interesting. I found images from Hong Kong where people were living in containers set on huge metal frames in an apartment-like arrangement. Not much had been done to the containers except stairway access.   The best examples I found were not for shipping containers, but from mid-century efforts at modular housing or “utopian” mass housing."

As one writer put it, "those folks who buy that ranch in Argentina today are going to have grandchildren who will think they were a genius." Gary Scott tells us more, in an article from the best of International Living.

HUNGARY
An American in a Refugee Camp -Click Here - by Charu Newhouse - I’m often asked how and why I went to the camp.  It’s relatively simple, my background is in human rights and international relations. After bartending and waitressing my way through Europe, I was interested in doing something a bit more meaningful.  I’ve always felt the need to give something back to the countries I’ve traveled through and lived in.  After all, those countries have given me some very profound experiences. So when I arrived in Budapest, I grabbed a telephone book and found out the Hungarian Red Cross was just down the street from my hostel.  I went there with an interest in refugee work anywhere in Eastern Europe and they in turn dropped me off at Debreceni Menekült Tábor, the Debrecen Refugee Camp.
Budapest - Budapest - An article on Budapest by an expatriate living there.  Budapest - Paris of the East - The Pearl of the Danube, The Little Paris, The City of Baths - It's a good place to be.
Living in “Strange and wonderful” Budapest - Click Here - Budapest, where the living is increasingly pleasant...and still very cheap - "The best arrangement I ever had in this city of 2 million was living a block from the river off Szabadság Bridge, just west of the Hotel Gellért on Bartók Bela. It was an elaborate, dusty three-bedroom apartment with 18-foot-tall ceilings and a living room the size of a fine restaurant, and I got the luxury of walking across the Danube each morning on my way to work. I shared the place with two colleagues, for a total of $160 a month. On warm spring nights, we would open the huge windows to the street below, an endless circus of squeaking trams and honking Ladas, and let the Danubian breeze flow through while we conjured the ghost of Bartók and let his spooky Gypsy string quartets play through the boom box. On $800 a month, I lived better than I have in San Francisco, New Orleans, or Washington on $3,000."
On The Road - - Budoia To Budapest - Click Here - For travelers who miss the pre-EU border checks and passport stamps as souvenirs, a trip to the edge of the Balkans should satisfy their nostalgia.  On a recent spur-of-the-moment, 5 day soggiorno intended to just explore the northeast corner of Slovenia, we decided to keep on going.  Budapest isn't that far.  The following are some road tips gleaned from making a 1500 km. odyssey into, around, and out of the Magyar Zone.
Plastic Surgery in Hungary - Click Here - While Budapest is fascinating and provides a myriad of opportunities, you will want to save more rigorous sightseeing and budget accommodations for another trip.  At this point you have given yourself permission to pamper yourself for two to four weeks so you will want to arrange accommodations to do just that without sacrificing value.  Living well is comparatively inexpensive in Budapest and you will find most transportation, dining and entertainment to be priced near communist era prices. - - - Many of the minor procedures have only one to two week recovery times allowing for numerous possibilities.  You might want to consider scheduling any rigorous activity before the surgery.  Only you can decide where and when you may or may not want to be seen with any bandages, but that is also a problem you would have at home.  Instead, deal with the dilemma in pleasant and comfortable surroundings.
The Fulbright Teachers Exchange Program - A Step By Step Guide - Click Here - By Pamela Campbell and Igor Smirnov - After spending 8 years teaching in Europe, this time I decided to go on a Fulbright exchange.

Bali
Looking At Real Estate In Bangkok, Bali & The Philippines - Click Here - I then went to Bangkok, a hot and crowded place, but my favorite city in this part of the world, probably even ahead of Hong Kong. Poor planning got me there in the middle of the Thai New Year, which meant everything was shut down for a week, and I didn't get a chance to see a lot of property. On the other hand, the whole city goes wild with a water festival; you walk down any street and after five minutes you're completely soaked from squirt guns and buckets of water thrown at you, day or night. It's great fun. Bangkok reminds me of L.A. without the social problems. If you're thinking of living in the Orient for a while, this is the place. - Doug Casey looks for real estate in the Orient.

Musings on Living in Jakarta - Click Here - Jeannie Fairfax writes, "I live in a distinctly Indonesian neighborhood, or, "kampung."  And, although bordering Jalan Sudirman, one of Jakarta's largest, most important thoroughfares, here in "Ben-Hill" (Bendungan-Hillerman) I can safely wander the curving, crooked paths day or night and feel far away -- in another world from the city." And with keen wit and intuitive observation she tells about the push cart vendors selling fruits, vegetables, dinners, houseplants, herbs, and about other people who make noise in front of her house.

Overseas with a Toddler: Traveling in Italy - Mama Mia - This timely article by Maura Madigan dispels some of the misconceptions and fears surrounding life outside the USA. Maura's article focuses on the benefits for children living an international life, such as increased cultural awareness and tolerance of differences and indifferneces. She says, "It’s the chance for them to experience life, not prefabricated kiddie fun." Why not show them the world. Maura, her husband, and their two-year-old daughter are on the road again after living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on a three year work contract. By the time their daughter was 18 months old, she had lived in three countries. Maura writes that many people, including friends and relatives, think it's outrageous to move and travelabroad with children.  They keep urging them  to settle in the US, but they don't feel that travel and fun need to end once children enter the picture.

IRELAND
At Doolan's Bar in Waterford - Click Here - By Bill Bonner from the Daily Reckoning - "The music style might be best described as Irish self- pity. The songs were political. Sentimental. Maudlin. When they weren't describing some guy who had to leave Ireland to find work in Florida, poor fellow, they expressed the familiar Irish themes: irredentism, patriotism and pathetic proletarianism. They were sung in that whiney Irish tenor voice that brings a mist to your eyes -- if you are in a particularly lugubrious mood or an alcoholic stupor."
Blind Date ~ Ireland - Top O' The Mornin' - Prior to her very, very early "retirement" and her move with her Irish husband and two young boys to their North County Dublin village of 8,000, Lori Alexander was a Behavioralist and Program Coordinator for a large California day program. About this article, Lori says, "We have just passed our year anniversary here, and have basically run the adjustment gauntlet."  Her article entails an overview of the honeymoon phase, her initial shocks, homesickness, and a year after.  "I have begun to feel as though I have a  place here, some idea of what is expected of me, and where I fit in.  I want to stay who I am, hang onto what was instilled in me my first thirty years, and now Ireland is becoming a part of that tapestry."
Doing the Dishes in County Kerry: My Brilliant Waitressing Career - Click Here - After a brilliant and fruitful career in advertising, escape artist Lynette Chiang writes about the comedy of waitressing in County Kerry, Ireland, bicycling in Currabeg, falling in love at first sight, and getting the boot for unrequited devotion to job, although, she recovered quickly, she says. Escape To Dublin - By Dale Heinen - Click Here - "...this was the place that spawned the monumental new playwrights Conor McPherson and Martin McDonagh, it was also the home of two seminal theaters, the Abbey and the Gate. I would find more funding, more public support for my plays, wonderful actors, writers on the verge of discovery, and a burgeoning film industry which would throw open its arms when I was ready to segue into film directing." Playwright Dale Heinen talks about the new Dublin.
Looking Down the Barrel of My Second Irish Winter - Settling In - Lori is the mother of two living in Dublin, Ireland, going on two years.  For Lori, the thought of settling in, planting roots in a foreign land, starting anew in every aspect, began with apprehension. Lori's concerns deeply reflect on the concerns shared by all people of a postmodern culture. We're a transient people, moving on average every five years. Lori is about to experience her second Irish winter, a prospect made more foreboding by the strange land she's trying to settle into. But now, after a year, she says,  "All of my realizations have persuaded me to get past my American - Expat - anthropology lovin’ cut-and-dried preconceptions and start understanding the real Ireland."

Resonant, Lonesome Donegal: Travels in Dunfanaghy, Ireland - Click Here - Donegal,  the wind-swept  and  rugged northernmost  province of Ireland, is arguably also Ireland’s most  beautiful region.  A stark and  serene beauty pervades the barren fields and rocky  hills that make up the  majority of Donegal. The author writes, "Legs aching from the hilly ride, a firm wind tearing through the clear autumn sky, I saw an impressive feature of the Celtic past -- one of the high, rounded ‘Viking signal-towers’ utilized in the 8th century to watch for maurauding Norsemen. All alone on the edge of  the world,  with the waves pounding off of the black crags and no sign of human existence save for this one forgotten tower, I felt supremely at peace with the world."

Down on the Farm - Homesteading In Japan - Click Here - Homesteading in Japan?  If not, why not?  The author of of this article, David Markle is a 17 year resident of Japan. He first came to Japan as a student and has resided there pretty much ever since. In this article he covers homesteading in Japan, what it takes, how it's done and where to look. "...some local governments will actually pay you to live in their village. I am not kidding. Granted it is not enough to get rich on, but, believe it or not many localities are falling all over themselves to recruit families especially with younger children, to move to their town. They are offering all sorts of incentives and assistance to try to “revitalize” the countryside."
Etiquette, Manners and the Japanese Business World - Click Here - CEO Richard Bysouth of Career Cross Japan delivers more valuable insight into the world of doing business in Japan. "As one would expect from a country with such a strong sense of hierarchy and honour, there are many unwritten laws regarding etiquette and manners that apply to the business world. Although no-one will expect a foreigner to know and abide by all these "codes of conduct", knowing a few of the basics will go along way to smoothing the path to success in Japan.
Resources for the Japanese Job Market - Click Here - CEO Richard Bysouth of Career Cross Japan, tells Escape from America readers about the ins and outs of where to look for Japan's job vacancies and what it's like in the Japanese workplace. Richard writes, "The typical Japanese worker tends to view the use of time rather differently then a western one. With the western approach, emphasis is placed on completing a task in the most efficient manner and within the shortest time possible. For the Japanese, it is considered more important for the whole team to work together to accomplish a goal. Eachindividual will know the limit of their responsibilities and what is expected of them, and will work selfishly to complete that task in hand.  The concept of "thinking out of the box" or looking for a quick result are very rare indeed and are often frowned upon. However the Japanese approach does ensure the end result will be something that is unanimously acceptable to all and is as complete as possible."
“The Gaijin Life for Me” - Teaching English in Japan - Click Here - I went to Japan with no definite plan on leaving. It was a post-grad school adventure, and a time to be without a plan.  Right after graduation with a master’s degree in social work that I wasn’t keen on using right away, the interim goal was to find a job teaching English abroad, most likely in Asia somewhere. An ad in the Boston Globe lead me to Nova Group – what turned out to be a corporate-run extensive network of English language schools all over Japan.

KOREA
Investing in Korea - Click Here - A Korean business man spent four years developing a relationship with a Malaysian.  The Malaysian finally agrees to a joint venture in Malaysia.  But, he wants a contract with guarantees in the event of breach.  He also wants to use modern accounting methods and have a means to keep track of the money.  The Korean backs away making lame excuses.  The real reason is that he did not want anything in writing, especially a contract.  His remark was, "You must understand the Korean way.  This is how we do business in Korea.  You don't trust me."  He openly displayed insult over the Malaysian distrust.  It was an affront to his honor and reputation.  Actually, he would have disappeared all of the cash and the Malaysian was smart enough to know what the Korean was about.  The deal never happened for good reason.
Relishing Narcissus in South Korea- Click Here - Barry Walsh is wandering the world trying to find a place between the gloom of mundane routine and the vivacity of the new. Sometimes travel makes it happen, even on weekend getaways to the environs of mountain hermitages of South Korea. Walsh writes, "This is bliss. I am the only Westerner traveling today as always, but whereas during the week I am detached, now I feel I belong. My weariness of heightened cynicism is replaced by a tempered tranquillity, my spirit found by renunciation. To me this is what experiencing a foreign culture is all about. I have done nothing uniquely Korean on my journey, but my self-assurance is sufficient. I ask the bus driver in my limited Korean how long the stop is for. I already know – it’s always the same – but right now my self-love is smothering my self-consciousness. While in the toilet, I observe my appearance – why don’t I have a girlfriend?"

KUWAIT
Through the Looking Glass -- A Madras Indian Living in the States Visits Kuwait - Click Here -
Pradeep Selvakumar discovers the culture of this oil rich Islamic nation and the way others look at the US from abroad. There are no taxes in Kuwait, living expenses are few, and only Kuwaitis are allowed to own businesses and property.  At the mall, he got his first indication that Kuwait isn't as conservative as most people probably think. The lingerie on the mannequins are as kinky as any he'd ogled in Victoria's Secret magazines. The movie "Speed" was on TV, and someone was asked if "things like that" happen in the US. He said that life in the US was pretty boring, actually. Then they wanted to know if he owned a gun . . . .

LIBERIA
TWILIGHT Zone - Click Here - Teacher, missionary, screenwriter, Maurice Blaise tells of his experiences in Liberia, Africa. This two page article written in descriptive detail tells of human strife and love of life on the dark continent. Blaise writes, "Each morning, between five and twenty containers of yellowish river water greeted them at liturgy. The villagers believed in the efficacy of prayer. Peter's hand no longer shook. He quickly dropped the host on her withered tongue. She was the third and last recipient, from a total congregation of seven. Turning, he ascended the altar's three steps. A rooster, outside the doorless, ocean entrance, lined with large yellow and red hibiscus, greeted the rising sun with a startling screech. As she receded, he returned to his thoughts. No, it wasn't loneliness, male hormones, or friendship that had driven him to seek out this Mona Lisa."

Perhentian Islands - Click Here - The Perhentian are a cluster of islands off the East coast of the Malaysian Peninsula  and are only accessible by a one hour boat trip from the main land.  There are two main islands, known as Besar and Kecil or more simply big and small island.  Both rise up out of the sea covered in a lush tropical rainforest and are fringed by palm fronted, white sand beaches.   Roads are non-existent and the only way to get around is by the many small boats which ply round the islands delivering guests, food, and collecting rubbish.  Unlike more famous Asian beaches, the Perhentian islands are remarkably undeveloped and no high rise hotels, loud bars or concrete disturbs the natural landscape.

MEXICO
Caretaking Overseas - Click Here - An interesting, though seldom considered option for adventurous souls seeking a new life outside of their home countries is property caretaking.  This increasingly popular strategy provides prospective expats with insight and experience into the culture and lifestyle of another country - all while enjoying the benefits of living rent-free.
Financing an Escape from the Rate Race: My Move to Morelia - Click Here - Sandy Caputo looked at the horizon and decided to take the risk. She did and she succeeded in finding a niche for herself in Morelia, Mexico.. Sandy writes, "Newly divorced and with a very tiny nest egg, I sat there by that pool in Morelia and began toying with the idea that I could, if I was careful and brave enough, risk walking away from security to gamble on making life work for me on a saner and more personally fulfilling scale. So I bit the bullet a year later, resigned my position, cancelled plans to return to the agency somewhere down the road, and dropped that dream-strangling hold that relying on U.S.-supplied health and medical security had become. I now have my novel AND a half-way completed book called Shortcut to Morelia with a major publisher. I also consult for my agency and my living expenses are being covered nicely under that arrangement at about one-fourth the number of hours I was previously putting in."
Living In Mexico - Click Here - I remember my first trip to Mexico fondly. I was in Puerto Vallarta for the new years week of 1993/94. Although Puerto Vallarta is a very popular tourist destination it still hasn't lost the feel of a truly Mexican city. The cobble stone streets and the architecture are reminders of its simple fishing village roots. As a man in my twenties at the time I felt right at home with the "Party until 3AM" atmosphere of the downtown bar scene. The older people at my hotel were quite content to spend the day sight seeing and shopping. The city had something to offer everyone.
Living in Mexico for about $350 per month: Balancing Wants and Needs - Spartan but Sublime - Jerry Draughon is a 66 year-young retiree from the University of Florida. He lives alone, likes to fish, dance, write, and sell items from Mexico on the Internet. "It helps my income, but it's not needed to get by," he says. "I have fun and enjoy as much as I can."  Originally from North Carolina, he has lived most of his life in Florida. Other than his army travels for Uncle Sam, he hadn't been anywhere until he discovered Mexico ... great weather ... great people ... great times ... always something going on. "These are a fun people!" says aka Mexicojerry. " Just love it!!" There's also an Editor's Note on Medical Services.
Moving To Mexico is a Breeze...  Compared to Heading West in a Conestoga - Click Here - by
Jennifer Rose - Once you've obtained your FM-3, you're allowed a one-time opportunity to import a reasonable amount of household goods into Mexico. While there's no definition of "reasonable amount," be prepared for payment of taxes and some serious negotiation. Long before your move, you'll need to submit a detailed inventory, in English and Spanish, detailing all you intend to import, down to brand name and serial numbers and about $75 to the Mexican Consulate for review, stamp and approval. According to the Mexican Consulate, you can bring your personal goods, including computers, televisions and electronic equipment into the country duty-free. Used appliances seem to fare better than those still showing the warranty card.

Paradise Found? - The Expatriate Scene In Xcalak, Mexico - Click Here - We sat around a table under a palapa with Darrell, his fishing guide, Mike from Minnesota, and Stephen, an American expatriate from Sweden, who vacations here once a year for “the quiet and solitude.” Miguel popped open five Sols behind the open-air bar. I looked around and thought, “Is this real?” - The cerulean Caribbean  lapped at the scalloped edges of a bleached-white beach, dotted with inward leaning palm trees, and best of all, no people. There in the middle of paradise, the hours ambled by. Stories were told. Palm fronds crackled in the breeze,  pelicans landed on the pier and took off again, and the smell of the hamburgers Miguel was grilling filled the air.

Teaching English in Mexico is an option much preferable than simply taking a vacation in Mexico. Teaching will be like taking a paid vacation where you interact with the people. What does "Escaping" really cost? ~ The Impact of Personality and Personal Tastes - Click Here - In her second installment of escaping the rat race north of the Rio Grande, Sandy Caputo prosaically emphasizes the associated costs of living abroad within the context of wants and needs. She writes, "It was during my last planned five-week immersion back into the world of advertising and public relations in Tucson that my fiancé prevailed upon me to agree to allow him in on my adventure. While alone, I may be frugal, with him I become a lot more open to an if it feels good, do it attitude. In my year and a half of escapist living, I’ve lived cheaply and lived well. Now, there's a new version of living well in Mexico." It's still cheap, but not so cheap.

MOROCCO
The King and I ~ Lost in Fez - Mazing it in Morocco - J. Marcia Night has lived and worked in virtually every corner of the world. She recentlty visited Morocco. "Hopelessly lost, unable to find my way through the maze as the light is becoming dimmer, I search for a way out from amongst the ancient medieval structures that seem to go on forever, perched along cobblestone streets. Houses have closed their shutters, and the deserted alleyways are beginning to fill me with a sense of intrigue mixed with awe; a bit of fear is admittedly beginning to creep in. It is my first evening in the city of Fez. The King arrives tomorrow."

MOZAMBIQUE
Opportunity in Mozambique - Click Here - I stayed mostly with an Afrikaner who had staked out 20 hectares (50 acres) of beautiful beach about an hour out of town; his cost basis is basically zero. The government gave it to him because he committed to develop it for tourism; someday it's going to be worth what prime beach front just outside a city is worth anywhere else in the world. He'll fill his property with Germans and Swedes flying down to beat the European winter while taking advantage of fresh lobster and fish that cost almost nothing. And there aren't just hundreds, but thousands of miles of pristine deserted beach on this country's coast.

Tax Time with an Overseas B&B - Click Here - Ron Winkles and his wife run a Bed and Breakfast establishment in the Czech Republic. They spend about six months of each year in the US and six months in the Czech Republic. Ron writes, "Our return on investment has run about 5 to 8 percent annually, and we have had a great time making a little more than stateside CD rates while earning a nice tax write off. I was audited once by the IRS, the agent was curious and could not believe a retired couple earning $55,000 a year could afford to live in America and own a villa in Europe. Jokingly, I told him we saved money by not shopping in Wal-Mart."
The 5 Best Ways To Live, Retire, Or Profit In New Zealand - Click Here - New Zealand is one of my favorite places in the world. It’s a lot like the western coast of the United States, only turned upside down. The North Island is tropical, like San Diego…the South is cool, like Portland or Seattle.  As a California native, I have a funny requirement when looking for a place to live, work, or “retire.” It’s this: I look to see whether or not avocados grow there. You see, avocados like it warm...with lots of sunlight. So do I. So if they grow there, I know I’ll at least like the weather. Avocados grow very well in northern New Zealand.  by Rick Rule [From The Best Of International Living]

NICARAGUA
Granada - Nicaragua’s Grandest City - Click Here - One more thing: If the old Spanish colonial structures in Granada appeal to you as much as they appeal to me…you can buy one for $80,000 to $100,000 (it’ll need a lot of work)…or you can spend as much as $200,000. A few years ago, these places sold for $40,000 or $50,000, or less. The trouble is there aren’t many of them. The city burned in 1856 and was rebuilt according to the same plan. Most of the colonial-style houses are 150 years old. You can count on your fingers those that date back more than 400 years. From The Best of International Living -

Finding Offshore's Basis in International Law - Click Here - by Philip LaMar Jr. -  ...while governments of economically powerful nations may continue to exert political pressure to bend the will of smaller nations, International Law requires that the sovereignty of nations be respected in courts of law. With this protection in place, a small nation may enact legislation designed to shelter foreigners and to attract foreign wealth, and it is not possible for a superpower to conduct a judicial examination of the smaller nation’s governmental action.

Offshore Business Opportunities You May Have Overlooked - Click Here - "The greatest level of diversity may only be achieved, however, through offshore. Investors in some countries may only invest in what has been approved by government commissions, or in offerings which fit one of the commission’s exceptions. An offshore presence allows investment on a truly limitless basis, in any type of security in any market around the world." by Philip S. LaMar, Jr., JD

Replicating Cinema Paradiso or Resurrecting Isla Taboga's Bakery - Click Here - In the previous issue of Escape From America Magazine, I introduced our readers to Isla Taboga in two articles entitled, The Road to Charlie’s Houseand Discovering Panamania - Living On An Iland In Panama - Realizing A Dream.  In review, Isla Taboga is a small island about 10 miles in circumference located 14 miles from the Panamanian mainland and bustling Panama City.  That makes it a city boy’s dream come true – island escape within an hour’s ferry ride to a big metropolis. The question of what to do with our property still persists, but not because it’s hard to find an answer. The island is still there in its pristine splendor, and we're having fun dreaming. Here are some of our ideas...
Simple Steps to Buying Property in Panama - Panama Property Easy as ABC - Our EscapeArtist friend from Volcan, Panama, writes to us on how simple, safe, and secure it is to purchase property in Panama. The five steps William Hemingway outlines are the basis of purchasing property in Panama and much of the rest of the region. Volcan, Bocas del Toro, and Boquete are featured. "The Chiriqui Provence and Bocas del Toro Provence offer buyers the best choices in the world for beautiful, ideal highland properties and tropical island properties," writes Hemingway. "Anyone can buy and fully own property without being a resident of Panama. All you have to do is show your passport upon purchase." And, your purchase and ownership is protected.

The Other Side of the Gold Market - Click Here - A friend and his family from Costa Rica just visited us here in Panama.  One of the things he mentioned was gold.  We had a long and exacting discussion about gold.  He convinced me it's about to go up.  As someone who made money on gold in the 70's I've always been a 'gold bug' but my enthusiasm for it has waned over the years. None-the-less my friend convinced me that it's about to make an upwards move that may send it quite high.  As it's always been a standard of value, gold is always a good thing to keep on hand.  For expatriates and escapeartists, making sure that there is food and money stashed away for an emergency is an important subject.  We asked Mark Smalley of BullionCoin.Com to give us an article on gold to wet our appetites on the subject.  With the new millennium coming - and potential social breakdown looming perhaps now is a good time to stock up on a few essentials.  Gold is one of them.
The Panama Canal Silicon Valley - Click Here - The law firm of Pardini and Associates has provided a two page comprehensive report on what sort of business and end-consumer can benefit from offshore e-commerce, different ways an e-commerce company can experience cost savings, and why those companies should move their activities to Panama.  The answer to that why question is now, given Panama's continental fiber-optic network links, infrastructure, and incentives. These together with the strong recuperation of its international banking center, the report concludes, can be seen as heralds of a second Singapore in the middle of the American continent, a point of reference not to be ignored in the conceptions of the new economy of the 21st century.
The Perfect Expat Destination - Click Here - The reason people are moving to Boquete is obvious. It is the perfect expat destination. We've never had wider response to any subject, issue, or place than we've had to Boquete, Panama. Because of the amazing demand - over 3,000 people have requested information from us in the month of April alone - we are creating a Boquete visitors' package which includes discount coupons, maps, contacts, traveling information, reservations, tours of the area, and a great deal more.
The Road To Charlie's House - Living On An Island ~ Isla Taboga - Click Here - Sea breezes circulate through the open shutters facing the sea.  The opposite end of the house has veranda-like balconies that hang over the street. The verandas provide a restful place to sit and view the village with its narrow winding footpaths and colonial architecture. The village is nestled against a lush green tropical hillside and the footpaths meanander like a labyrinth up through the village and into the surrounding jungle. The house also has a basement floor which leads out into a garden at the rear of the house.  In the garden there are lemon and orange trees as well as the ancient foundations of a long forgotten structure, the stone remains of which stick up through the riot of bougainvillea, jasmine and wild hibiscus and give an effect like that of an abandoned sculpture garden gone crazy with flowers.

PHILIPPINES

ROMANIA
Romania - Doug Casey Evaluates The Gypsies, Real Estate, Stock Market & Culture Of Romania - Click Here - Romania, with brief intervals of respite, has been a hard luck story for most of its history. Unlike a lot of other countries of which that's true, I have a good feeling about the place. But most investors give the country a discount, mainly because they're unfamiliar with it. And, insofar as they are familiar with it, they've heard mostly dated and unfavorable things. That's fine. It's why the opportunity exists. - If anything, property is a better buy than stocks. Bucharest is very cheap by most standards; I'll guess about 25% of Western European levels for equivalent buildings. But that's not what got my attention. The fact is that the country probably has the best farmland in Europe-- flat, deep, rich topsoil in the Danube basin, combined with a fairly mild climate.

RUSSIA
A Short Course In Clearing Customs - Click Hereby Doug Casey "I probably enter and leave the U.S. about two dozen times a year. By far the most unpleasant part of traveling  --- more than the delays, the endless hours in a flying cigar tube, the irregular schedules it entails  --- is going through customs and immigration. The people working for these agencies are about the bottom of the barrel."

The Less Friendly and More Inquisitive Skies - Click Here - By Doug Casey - There are many unsavory features about flying today. Crowded airports, packed planes, squalling kids, people dressed like they're coming from the gym (except they're usually too fat for that ever to be the case). The lower class atmosphere surrounding the whole experience is reminiscent of Riding the Dog (taking a Greyhound bus) in years past. It's even worse, since bus travel never subjected passengers to impertinent questions, mandatory x-ray of luggage or a possible strip-search by minimum wage dingbats.  If Hieronymus Bosch was alive today, he'd paint airport scenes.

All aboard the Singapore-Malacca Express - Click Here - Tim Jellings is a travel writer with stories of wierd adventures from around the varied parts of the world. His keen sense of observation is a one of a kind. Tim writes, "My eyes catch each humorous shop name; like Bang on, Hang On, See Fun, Fun Fatt Kok. The local spelling of Talipon for telephone, Bas sekolal for school bus and Buk for book also brings a smile. Outside the Chinese temple, in the early morning, I see a man standing outside with a burning joss stick clamped between the hands. In silent prayer he asks for evil to be kept away. Not one word or even a glance. A youth dressed only in pyjama trousers is graffiting the posters in green and red paint. He is observed by a very old man, who never stirs and sits crossed legged, silently absorbing the young man's artistry."

SLOVENIA
Slovenia: A Proud History, a Promising Future - Click Here - A Mediterranean climate along the coast, lush vineyards and fields of sunflowers inland, virgin forests, snow capped mountains and sky resorts -- no, we're not California. You'll find all this plus gothic cathedrals, baroque palaces and more in Slovenia, a tiny country no bigger than New Jersey. From Slovenia you could go to Venice, Italy, for a Sunday outing and be back in time for dinner. Oddly enough, many people haven't even heard of it, and others confuse it with Slovakia.
Slovenia: Old Europe at its Best  ~ Click Here - Slovenia feels the way Europe did 30 or 40 years ago, when life was slower and more civilized. The capital, Ljubljana, often compared to Paris and Prague, is more manageable and relaxed. The Kras wine region reminds me of Tuscany before the crowds, and the Slovenians are aware of the need to limit development.

SPAIN
An Ex-Ex-Pat ~ Even Cowgirls Get the Blues - Home Home on the Range? - Libby Royster returned to the US after two years as an instructor of English as a foreign language in Madrid, Spain. Those two years were the best, most challenging, of her life, she says. Returning wasn't an easy choice. She left a lot behind. Her observations show that expats can return home, again, but not without leaving much behind. She says, "Life does not end when you come back. You just have to try harder, rage against the known, and mix it up a little. And you can always go back…"
Barcelona - From The Best Of International Living - Click Here - "Barcelona is like Paris or Rome —only smaller and a fraction of the price. It’s the chicest city in Spain. All the trendy European and American designers have shops here. It’s also safe, cheap…and easy to get around. And it has some excellent,  if bizarre,  architecture. - - -  Real estate and rentals in Barcelona are surprisingly inexpensive… and a very sound investment, particularly right now, if you’re paying with dollars or sterling. Prices are relatively low because Spain is still digging itself out of General Franco’s socialist mess."
Buying a Home in Spain - Click Here - Spain offers infinite variety with something for everyone, including magnificent beaches for sun worshippers and spectacular unspoiled countryside for magnificent vistas and  peaceful strolling.  There are also an abundance of mountains and seas for sports fans and a vibrant night-life for the jet set. For those who are comfortable living in cities, there are bustling sophisticated metropolises. The Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol have the highest percentage of retired persons in the world, when both Spaniards and foreigners are included. If you’re seeking a second home, will it be mainly used for long weekends or for lengthier stays?

An Introduction to Living and Teaching in Bangkok - Click Here - Right now the English Language industry is booming in Thailand, and Bangkok is awash with language schools both big and small. There is absolutely no reason why any native English speaker need spend more than a week or two finding a job suitable for him or her. Currently, only top-notch institutions hire from abroad and the best place to land a job is in the city itself. Almost every issue of the Bangkok post carries at least two or three advertisements for language teaching positions and even those schools stipulating qualifications/experience necessary are realistic enough to compromise if the applicant seems reliable and smart.
Back to School in Bangkok - Click Here - Ok you may not be able to afford the tuition and living expense of going off to Europe or Japan for a few years to get a master’s degree, but what about Thailand?  There are a number of universities in Thailand that offer international programs, both undergraduate and graduate level, that are taught exclusively in English.  Many of these programs are priced fairly reasonably.  At Bangkok University, where I’m currently working on an MBA, the overall cost of a master’s degree, tuition, fees and books, is only around $5,000 and takes approximately two years to complete.
Exploring the Wild Rivers of Southeast Asia - Click Here - Harold Stephens returns to Escape from America Magazine with stories of high adventure and discovery. Stephens writes, "At the opposite extreme of the Chao Phraya River in Thailand is the Rejang River in Borneo. The Rejang is a wild river where fierce headhunters once roamed. The Rejang River to this day spells adventure. When I set out to explore the headwaters, my plan was to hire longboats in Kapit, the last outpost on the Rejang, and travel up river to where the Rejang meets the Balleh River. I would then follow the Balleh to its very source, leave boat and there hire porters, and cross into Kalimantan in Indonesia. That was my plan, but it didn't work out quite that way."
Former Hit Artist Turns Restaurateur - Click Here - So why come to Bangkok? Loveland pauses and says, "Six years ago everyone said that Asia was the place to put your money, and specifically Thailand. But they said to do it quickly, because the opportunity wouldn't last. When I bought this place we were the only ones out here. Now the development is just booming, and soon there are going to be two more expressways passing right by here, so I couldn't have asked for a better location. Our clientele is also much better behaved because we are far away from the Sukhumvit, and the Patpong crowd."

Scott tells Escape from America readers how an MBA degree from an Asian university can increase your value on the labor market in the USA and Europe. He writes, "Many of the same universities also offer undergraduate programs in English." Hyperlinks to several university websites accompany this article.

The Mood of Southeast Asia - Click Here - Harold Stephens returns to Escape from America Magazine with an excerpt from his novel, Return to Adventure: Southeast Asia. Stephens writes, "There are images so powerful you cannot forget them. The sounds that came to me, at first, were inconsequential, until I minded them. When you sit there long enough, you wonder if your senses are deceiving you. I heard, very faintly, the echo of a gong somewhere far off. A gong in the forest! In an instant more, it was clearer, and louder, and mingled now with faraway voices. Then came the sound of a flute, and another, and more gongs. I watched them grow from fuzzy silhouettes into focus, like a camera zooming in on its subject. I could see them clearly now, all wearing sarongs, white sarongs, and around their waists were scarlet cummerbunds fastened with rich buckles carved in gold."

My husband Keith and I discovered how kind and compassionate the Turkish people are when we visited the city of Konya, located in the central Anatolia region. Konya is a devoutly Muslim city."  Over the past year, Leanne and her husband have been traveling the not so beaten paths of South Asia, Africa, Australia, and SW Asia.  Their travels have shown them a compassionate world exists where people of all beliefs choose the path of peace.

For Love of Medicine - Click Here - Lev Fedyniak is fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a medical doctor, but like many, she's attending a university outside the US. Lev writes, "I followed the traditional route to try to get into med school: college with a pre-med major, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), lots of extra-curricular and community activities. While my grades and scores were above average, they weren’t “superior.”  Lastly, I lacked the tacit factors that could swing an admission -- no family member who was a doctor, not rich, and I lacked political or other influence. I’m not even sure where I’d have gotten the money to afford going! Then, I discovered a medical university where the annual tuition is $3,500, where classes are taught in English, where the MCAT isn’t required and where my age wasn’t considered a liability, but an asset. Upon graduation, I can sit for the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) to practice in the States. The University is in Ukraine, at Lviv State Medical University. This program was “just what the doctor ordered."
The Other Place ~ Un-touristy Ukraine - Like the Wild Wild West - Jeremy Cornam has just returned from his fourth visit to Western Ukraine, what he would describe as the 'forgotten heart of Europe'. One of the attractions of Ukraine for him, at least the region he visits, is the almost complete absence of  tourists. "It's all strangely liberating. Maybe that's what the Wild West was like," says Jeremy, "Like finding a restaurant bill ten times less than expected. Doubtless, after a number of ebb and flows,  the tide of rising Western standards of living will cross Poland to reach Ukraine."  He's written another article titled 'Land of Giant Empty Houses', which appears in the latest edition of the EscapeArtist.Com Offshore Real Estate Quarterly. Jeremy Cornam says it's the best real estate bargain going in this yet undiscovered corner of the world, one steeped in culture at the farthest end of Eastern Europe.

A Painful Visit - Click Here - This article chronicles an emigrant's experiences at a medical clinic and questions the high price of medical care in the US, compared with his home country of Poland. "As an old Polish saying goes," writes Ryszard Krasowski, "The further in, the deeper. I had sunk so deep I felt I'd been swallowed up by a sea of questions.  I'd had complete confidence in the clinic, so when the doctor proposed surgery, my only concern was where I would find the money to pay for it.  Why did he tell me I had to have surgery if I didn't need it? Why did I have to pay more for the first visit if I wasn't sure if I would have to come back for a second visit?  Maybe I'd choose to go to a different doctor.  When I was going to pay a doctor a visit in Poland, I wasn't afraid of it. Here, in America, I am scared to death. I am scared to death, not because I have a health problem to solve, but because the visit makes me sick even more."  All oil paintings are by the author.
Another Reason to Leave - Click Here - At some point, you have to make practical decisions in your life. Perhaps some wish to be martyrs. This may be a noble choice, but being dead does not help the situation. The better choice is to leave and let the situation burn itself out.
Cross-Cultural Savvy: Don't Go Abroad Without It - Click Here - Gary Wederspahn is a leading intercultural business trainer, consultant, speaker, and writer of an acclaimed book on cultural awareness for US travelers. What we have adopted from our culture can often work against us abroad. Wederspahn writes, "In addition to their household items and personal belongings, US expatriates also take with them invisible cultural baggage composed of values, beliefs, attitudes, assumptions and expectations.  How people in their host countries perceive them and respond to them depends largely on the contents of this intangible luggage. The advice inscribed on the ancient temple of Apollo at Delphi to “Know thyself” is as valid in today’s era of globalization as it was when Socrates first quoted it over thousand years ago. You can’t avoid taking your US cultural baggage abroad with you.  But at least you can be aware of it and be careful to not unconsciously impose it on others."

Since then, almost every investment -- even at very low prices -- has been a losing one. Whichever direction you look, right or left, it is the wrong side of the track. Mattresses lying on the ground in backyards, rusted out cars and factories, boarded up or broken out window -- garbage everywhere...in piles, in ditches, even in the trees. The scenes are hard to reconcile with the vision of a New Era -- and everyone getting rich. These people certainly are not rich. They are not even poor. They would have to work for years and save their money to reach poverty."

Life on the Run: Part One - Click Here - Becoming a fugitive is a romantic concept that is at once full of terror, excitement and opportunity.  There are many reasons people become fugitives.  Some involve criminal matters, some involve personal or civil matters, but in either case, stuff one no longer wishes to deal with.  Sometimes it involves liberty and sometimes it involves convenience.  Sometimes the people are inherently bad people and sometimes they are good people who have either screwed up and wish to start over or innocent people who are tired being persecuted and wish to be left alone. Possible Increased US Effort to Track Offshore Assets as a Result of Terrorism - Don't Tread on Me - This commentary, submitted anonymously as a Letter the the Editor of Escape from America Magazine, reflects a growing concern among American citizens that their right to invest abroad and take advantage of lower taxes in foreign markets may soon be compromised under the ruse of international terrorism. Earlier this year, the US Government approached several tax haven nations in its effort to crack down on citizens rights to invest overseas. Rumor has it that the US Government even threatened to freeze US assets of foreign banks if those banks continued to withhold investment information concerning US citizens in those countries. Some believe the US government will begin using the ruse of terrorism in increasing their efforts. Escape from America Magazine invites readers to send comments to the Editor and voice their opinions on this volatile issue.

Plantations In The South Pacific - Vanish To Vanuatu - Click Here - There are perhaps three ways to look at property: As a productive asset, as a speculative holding, or as a lifestyle proposition. I've spent a fair amount of time and money flying around Vanuatu to get a grip on property, and I think it's worth considering, possibly on all three bases.Vanuatu is certainly one of the world’s more beautiful locations. James Michener used it as the model for Bali Hai when he wrote Tales of the South Pacific while he was stationed here during WW II. The French developed numerous copra plantations on the islands over the 100 years up to independence in 1980, and they're still the dominant factor in today's economy.

VIRGIN ISLANDS
Making Choices - Trying to Pick a New Country to Live In - Click Here - There are opportunities everywhere. I’ve heard from reliable sources that no one, I repeat, no one is supplying fresh produce or vegetables on any of the American Virgin Islands.  Produce has to shipped into the Virgins from afar at great shipping cost. (causing the available produce in V.I. markets to be high in price and dated in flavor.) The reason for the lack of locally grown produce, or so we’ve been told, is a scarcity of water.  There are several ways to grow fresh vegetables hydroponically that utilize low water-consumption methods. As a matter of fact, upon hearing about that lack of fresh produce in the Virgins I spent several days reading about hydroponic methods and thinking about what it would take to set up such a venture.  It was a rather intriguing few days.  It would be lots of hard work, but in our opinion it would be fun, in addition to it’s having the potential of being extremely lucrative.  There are numerous nearby islands that would also be interested in purchasing fresh produce.  The venture would take some serious research.  Hydroponics is a science; but it isn’t rocket science and we believe that anyone with a brain could learn what is required to be successful.
