AFGHANISTAN
Afghanistan
before War - You
Khan - Before the coup, before the Russians invaded,
before ensuing tribal conflicts, before the US reprisal against terrorism,
Afghanistan was a country on the "Overland Trail." Many travelers
passed though on their way to India or Europe. It was a country, which
had not fully entered the twentieth century. It may be true, today. Mr.
Ginger made his first trip to Afghanistan in 1976. Since then, he has traveled
there on several occasions, the most recent being this year, before the
terrorist attacks on NYC and Washington. Ginger's experiences in Afghanistan
paint a picture of a people firecly proud of their Asian heritage, and
a country where war is no stranger.
The
Fierce Afghani Game of Buskashi - The
Afghan Pulse - The ancient game of Buzkashi has been
played in northern Afghanistan since the days of Ghengis Khan, the Mongol
warrior whose army swept across Asia in the 13th century. It is a
fierce game of competition played on the steppes of Asia by expert horsemen.
The chopendoz strive to win at any cost. It is a Machiavellian game,
where the end justifies the means and all means are utilized. In centuries
past, the game of Buzkashi would begin at daybreak and last till sundown.
The fierce struggle for winning remains. The
chopendoz are remarkable
horsemen and frenzied competitors, where anything goes. Smashed noses,
wrenched shoulders, and shattered thigh bones are not at all uncommon.

from behind the wall. You needed to enter through a grand cast-iron gate
and follow the dirt walkway, which was defined by two rows of rocks through
the dirt yard. The offices were in a yellow one story building. In front
was a verandah with several tall green French doors, each leading to a
different office. The paint on everything was chipped and faded."

would do well to consider all this first Christian nation has to offer.
With an incredibly low cost of living, a variety of climates, choice of
city or country life, many sites to visit, virtually zero crime and one
of the world's most hospitable people, it has much to offer anyone. As
part of the Soviet Union, Armenia was one of the most prosperous and advanced
parts of the entire communist world. Now, with independence
and a depressed economy, it offers a chance to live in a Western city for
very little money."

or I should say when I first saw him, was when he was still in high school,
hanging around the Bangkok World newspaper selling ads for a harebrained
project he had. That was in 1966 and I was a reporter for the World at
the time. It wasn't long after that that Bill's father kicked him out of
the house. Bill had graduated from high school but he didn't want to go
to college. His father gave him an ultimatum: go to college or get a job.
Bill didn't wanted to do either." by Harold Stephens

Artist Evaluation of Australia As a Expatriate Destination - Click
Here - As pointed out in the book Escape From America,
measuring a nation's potential as an expatriate destination by looking
only at the level of wages & personal income is foolish. Level of income
tells you nothing other than how much is being earned. It doesn't tell
you the price of tomatoes, the quality of the schools, nor the level of
crime. If you have to put bars on your windows, bus your children 15 miles
to a civilized school and eat polluted tomatoes, you've lost income and
quality of life - - Australia is noted for many things, but most
of all it is noted for it's excellent quality of life.

a country like Belize. Which is better? - Escape From America

Kit: Belize - Belize is a favorite of those seeking a
calmer lifestyle in close proximity to the wonders of nature. It's
a place where Big Brother isn't looking over your shoulder and you can
set your own building codes or own a flock of chickens. It's a place where
you can spend the day fishing without trying to keep up with the Jones's.
It's also become one of the hottest expatriate destinations in Latin America.
In a world that cries out for 'how to' books, a 'how to' book on moving
to Belize was sorely needed. That need was recently met by Lan Sluder,
with the publication of his Adapter Kit: Belize from Avalon Travel

Their destinations are any one or several of over 2,200 workcamps

work with farmers in the fields, others with children in the inner cities.
By volunteering their time and money to help distant neighbors, all share

in a threadbare country. After three decades of war and instability, Cambodia,
which has experienced horror rivaling anything in history, is on the mend,
and the people are cautiously optimistic about the future. Optimism exists
because of Tabitha-Cambodia, a nonprofit organization based in Phnom Penh.

about taxes for US citizens working abroad. Canadians have it even better.
Tax policies derived from British Commonwealth Laws allow Canadian citizens
to receive non-resident status and enjoy no taxes levied obn capital gains
and interest accrued outside of Canada. Non-resident Canadian Sam Barsoumian
writes, "Unlike US citizens who are forever doomed to file annual taxes,
Canadian citizens can elect to become non-residents and forever bid Canada
Customs and Revenue Agency farewell. By taking residency in just about
any country other than the US, capital gains and interest generated outside
of Canada ceases to attract any tax whatsoever. Apart from the tax advantages,
taking up residency in other countries allows Canadians to live in a climate
of their own choosing and experience a better quality of life for comparatively
the same amount of Canadian living expenses. In many cases, the cost of
living is far less depending on their choice of country and spending habits."

I would pay her plane ticket to come to Havana from Santiago de Cuba, but
this was tantamount to telling a North American girl in Los Angeles that
her lover from Europe had arrived, but she'd have to travel to New York
in order to see him! All this was compounded by the fact that Cubans
aren't allowed to just travel about at will, but Havana is starting to

Using
an Offshore Merchant Account - Click
Here - You now can do business with a bank or credit
card processor in Germany, Singapore, Holland, or any place else just as
easily as "the bank down the road". In fact, nine times out of ten,
you will find the level of service to be much better with a bank half way
around the world, then you will with your neighborhood bank. Why?
They want your business, and they are willing to prove it. The other benefits
are obvious. If you intend to be virtual, the best place to begin is by
becoming virtual in fact. An offshore merchant account places you in a
virtual / offshore jurisdiction with favorable tax consequences.

- “Ecuador has it all,” I said to the group of adventure-some
International Living readers traveling with me to my adopted homeland.
“Beauty, convenience, and incredibly low cost. And right now, prices are
lower than ever.” I was having little trouble convincing this
crowd. We sat at a cliff-top restaurant and watched the Pacific stretch
blue and serene to the horizon. Miles of empty beach lay in our view. And
we had just returned from inspecting Mediterranean villas that overlook
a sleepy fishing village and the sea (on offer for only $35,000). by

"We found our new home for about $22,000. A house like ours (2000 sq. ft.
in a gated community) will cost about $50 - 60,000 today, but prices are
still cheap compared with living in the USA. Our property tax: $38.60,
registration of our used car: $18.00; monthly electric bill: $3.50; monthly
gas bill: $2.50. Gasoline costs $1.00 per gallon. Our maid
costs $3.50 per day (3 days each week, and she's a great cook). Most of
all, I love Ecuador because of the freedom I feel. I can do essentially
anything I want to, without having to negotiate a plethora of rules and
restrictions. I can make changes to my house without a building permit;
I can put in all the glass I want without violating a building code."

"In recent years, Central America has become the Florida, California and
Arizona of the 1950’s. Remember when you could buy beachfront property

Well, those days are now in full bloom just a little further south of the

but they allowed me to bring my bicycle as part of my baggage allowance

the bicycle from the airport into downtown Paris to catch the metro and
then the train for my trip to Dijon. From Dijon I had to catch a commuter

to childhood dreams and escape that madhouse she'd been led to believe
was everything. Existence as she knew it no longer sustained her. Deep
within the fraz and glitter of Hollywood, she'd begun asking the question
we are all asking, "Is this all there is to living? ... On Sept. 11, 2001,
we watched the Twin Towers disintegrate before our eyes, like Snow
White's kiss, naptime was over. We felt helpless that day, and despite
what the media tries to sell us, we feel helpless now. I want to hear at
least one happy story come out of a world like this. I figure, might
as well start with my own. It is not a crime to be an American, and
we shouldn't have to give up our dreams just because someone, somewhere
out there doesn't like us. I am living again and I wouldn't trade this
feeling for anything."

European males by the similarity of their narrow noses and lips, wire rimmed
glasses, receding hairlines, and thousand dollar suits. I shopped daily

country like Ghana is potentially much easier than making it in the U.S.
That's because you (the reader) have unique experiences, connections,
knowledge, and capital that - while they're commonplace in more advanced
countries - go a long way in an less developed countries (like Ghana),
where you're automatically a big fish in a little pond." ~

kitchens on Spetses don't have the generous sized ovens we're used to in
America. You know, the kind with the big old burners on top, which are
great for heating soup and making Jiffy Pop. Then they have a cavernous
area which I think you use for baking cookies and roasting things. All
I know is, they're hell to clean. And I only know that because every time
I moved to a new apartment, I had to clean one. Of course one cleaning
was all they usually needed during my tenure, because those frozen pizzas
don¹t make much of a mess.

Christopher Deliso writes, "When I came to Crete to live I had no idea
how different it would be from the rest of Greece. While I had traveled
widely in Greece, and had many Greek friends, I had never met
a Cretan. I was warned by the mainlander Greeks that Cretans were
a little bit dangerous -- ornery, quarrelsome, vindictive and boorish.
Happily, these stereotypes weren’t true at all -- rather, the people I
met during the course of a year were, like my kindly hosts near Amari,
very friendly, curious, and hospitable. The relaxed Cretan lifestyle is
well-geared towards those who enjoy sipping coffee in an outdoor café
as the hours lazily pass, or sleeping in the shade of a palm beach."

"In recent years, Central America has become the Florida, California and

Well, those days are now in full bloom just a little further south of the

the pool and other amenities in place they know 1) that they will definitely
be there and 2) what the place will look like when finished. What I’ve
realized is that people are as interested in what their surroundings will
look like as they are with what their actual house will look like. [From

Maverick designer Colin Reedy tells us how. "I felt like I had enough
information to start designing. I searched for examples of prior efforts
to modify shipping containers for housing. The companies that
sold the containers sometimes made modifications like windows or doors
for the contractors to use at construction sites, but nothing interesting.
I found images from Hong Kong where people were living in containers set
on huge metal frames in an apartment-like arrangement. Not much had been
done to the containers except stairway access. The best examples
I found were not for shipping containers, but from mid-century efforts
at modular housing or “utopian” mass housing."

and why I went to the camp. It’s relatively simple, my background
is in human rights and international relations. After bartending and waitressing

I’ve always felt the need to give something back to the countries I’ve
traveled through and lived in. After all, those countries have given
me some very profound experiences. So when I arrived in Budapest, I grabbed
a telephone book and found out the Hungarian Red Cross was just down the
street from my hostel. I went there with an interest in refugee work
anywhere in Eastern Europe and they in turn dropped me off at Debreceni

dusty three-bedroom apartment with 18-foot-tall ceilings and a living room
the size of a fine restaurant, and I got the luxury of walking across the
Danube each morning on my way to work. I shared the place with two colleagues,
for a total of $160 a month. On warm spring nights, we would open the huge
windows to the street below, an endless circus of squeaking trams and honking
Ladas, and let the Danubian breeze flow through while we conjured the ghost
of Bartók and let his spooky Gypsy string quartets play through
the boom box. On $800 a month, I lived better than I have in San Francisco,
New Orleans, or Washington on $3,000."

many people, including friends and relatives, think it's outrageous to

to settle in the US, but they don't feel that travel and fun need to end
once children enter the picture.

The author of of this article, David Markle is a 17 year resident
of Japan. He first came to Japan as a student and has resided there pretty
much ever since. In this article he covers homesteading in Japan, what
it takes, how it's done and where to look. "...some local governments will
actually pay you to live in their village. I am not kidding. Granted it
is not enough to get rich on, but, believe it or not many localities are
falling all over themselves to recruit families especially with younger
children, to move to their town. They are offering all sorts of incentives
and assistance to try to “revitalize” the countryside."

more valuable insight into the world of doing business in Japan. "As one
would expect from a country with such a strong sense of hierarchy and honour,
there are many unwritten laws regarding etiquette and manners that apply
to the business world. Although no-one will expect a foreigner to know
and abide by all these "codes of conduct", knowing a few of the basics
will go along way to smoothing the path to success in Japan.

Here - CEO Richard Bysouth of Career Cross Japan, tells
Escape from America readers about the ins and outs of where to look for
Japan's job vacancies and what it's like in the Japanese workplace. Richard
writes, "The typical Japanese worker tends to view the use of time rather
differently then a western one. With the western approach, emphasis is
placed on completing a task in the most efficient manner and within the
shortest time possible. For the Japanese, it is considered more important
for the whole team to work together to accomplish a goal. Eachindividual
will know the limit of their responsibilities and what is expected of them,
and will work selfishly to complete that task in hand. The concept
of "thinking out of the box" or looking for a quick result are very rare
indeed and are often frowned upon. However the Japanese approach does ensure
the end result will be something that is unanimously acceptable to all
and is as complete as possible."

It was a post-grad school adventure, and a time to be without a plan.
Right after graduation with a master’s degree in social work that I wasn’t

abroad, most likely in Asia somewhere. An ad in the Boston Globe lead me
to Nova Group – what turned out to be a corporate-run extensive network
of English language schools all over Japan.

KOREA
Investing
in Korea - Click
Here - A Korean business man spent four years developing
a relationship with a Malaysian. The Malaysian finally agrees to
a joint venture in Malaysia. But, he wants a contract with guarantees
in the event of breach. He also wants to use modern accounting methods
and have a means to keep track of the money. The Korean backs away
making lame excuses. The real reason is that he did not want anything
in writing, especially a contract. His remark was, "You must understand
the Korean way. This is how we do business in Korea. You don't
trust me." He openly displayed insult over the Malaysian distrust.
It was an affront to his honor and reputation. Actually, he would
have disappeared all of the cash and the Malaysian was smart enough to
know what the Korean was about. The deal never happened for good
reason.

- Barry Walsh is wandering the world trying to find a place
between the gloom of mundane routine and the vivacity of the new. Sometimes
travel makes it happen, even on weekend getaways to the environs of mountain
hermitages of South Korea. Walsh writes, "This is bliss. I am the only
Westerner traveling today as always, but whereas during the week I am detached,
now I feel I belong. My weariness of heightened cynicism is replaced by
a tempered tranquillity, my spirit found by renunciation. To me this is
what experiencing a foreign culture is all about. I have done nothing uniquely
Korean on my journey, but my self-assurance is sufficient. I ask the bus
driver in my limited Korean how long the stop is for. I already know –
it’s always the same – but right now my self-love is smothering my self-consciousness.
While in the toilet, I observe my appearance – why don’t I have a girlfriend?"

tells of his experiences in Liberia, Africa. This two page article written
in descriptive detail tells of human strife and love of life on the dark
continent. Blaise writes, "Each morning, between five and twenty containers
of yellowish river water greeted them at liturgy. The villagers believed
in the efficacy of prayer. Peter's hand no longer shook. He quickly dropped
the host on her withered tongue. She was the third and last recipient,
from a total congregation of seven. Turning, he ascended the altar's three
steps. A rooster, outside the doorless, ocean entrance, lined with large
yellow and red hibiscus, greeted the rising sun with a startling screech.
As she receded, he returned to his thoughts. No, it wasn't loneliness,
male hormones, or friendship that had driven him to seek out this Mona
Lisa."

a one hour boat trip from the main land. There are two main islands,
known as Besar and Kecil or more simply big and small island. Both
rise up out of the sea covered in a lush tropical rainforest and are fringed
by palm fronted, white sand beaches. Roads are non-existent
and the only way to get around is by the many small boats which ply round
the islands delivering guests, food, and collecting rubbish. Unlike
more famous Asian beaches, the Perhentian islands are remarkably undeveloped
and no high rise hotels, loud bars or concrete disturbs the natural landscape.

actively encourages foreign investment and offshore activity through the
Ministry of Industry & Commerce. The ministry operates a one stop shop
for clearances and permits; it also provides assistance in identifying
market outlets, joint venture partners, site locations, and buildings.
There is a wide range of investment incentives for inward investment. Free
Trade Zones and a Freeport were established in 1992 enabling up to 100%
foreign owned enterprises. Money laundering is discouraged by the government,
as is any trade in guns or drugs. The Economic Crime and Anti-Money Laundering
Act 2000 established an Economic Crime Office.

to take the risk. She did and she succeeded in finding a niche for herself
in Morelia, Mexico.. Sandy writes, "Newly divorced and with a very tiny
nest egg, I sat there by that pool in Morelia and began toying with the
idea that I could, if I was careful and brave enough, risk walking away
from security to gamble on making life work for me on a saner and more
personally fulfilling scale. So I bit the bullet a year later, resigned
my position, cancelled plans to return to the agency somewhere down the
road, and dropped that dream-strangling hold that relying on U.S.-supplied
health and medical security had become. I now have my novel AND a half-way
completed book called Shortcut to Morelia with a major publisher. I also
consult for my agency and my living expenses are being covered nicely under
that arrangement at about one-fourth the number of hours I was previously
putting in."

Here - I remember my first trip to Mexico fondly. I was
in Puerto Vallarta for the new years week of 1993/94. Although Puerto Vallarta
is a very popular tourist destination it still hasn't lost the feel of
a truly Mexican city. The cobble stone streets and the architecture are
reminders of its simple fishing village roots. As a man in my twenties
at the time I felt right at home with the "Party until 3AM" atmosphere
of the downtown bar scene. The older people at my hotel were quite content
to spend the day sight seeing and shopping. The city had something to offer
everyone.

funny requirement when looking for a place to live, work, or “retire.”
It’s this: I look to see whether or not avocados grow there. You see, avocados

Other Side of the Gold Market - Click
Here - A friend and his family from Costa Rica just visited
us here in Panama. One of the things he mentioned was gold.
We had a long and exacting discussion about gold. He convinced me
it's about to go up. As someone who made money on gold in the 70's
I've always been a 'gold bug' but my enthusiasm for it has waned
over the years. None-the-less my friend convinced me that it's about to
make an upwards move that may send it quite high. As it's always
been a standard of value, gold is always a good thing to keep on hand.
For expatriates and escapeartists, making sure that there is food and money
stashed away for an emergency is an important subject. We asked Mark
Smalley of BullionCoin.Com to give us an article on gold to wet our appetites
on the subject. With the new millennium coming - and potential social
breakdown looming perhaps now is a good time to stock up on a few essentials.
Gold is one of them.

give the country a discount, mainly because they're unfamiliar with it.
And, insofar as they are familiar with it, they've heard mostly dated and
unfavorable things. That's fine. It's why the opportunity exists. - If
anything, property is a better buy than stocks. Bucharest is very cheap
by most standards; I'll guess about 25% of Western European levels for

that the country probably has the best farmland in Europe-- flat, deep,
rich topsoil in the Danube basin, combined with a fairly mild climate.

Here - Right now the English Language industry is booming
in Thailand, and Bangkok is awash with language schools both big and small.
There is absolutely no reason why any native English speaker need spend
more than a week or two finding a job suitable for him or her. Currently,
only top-notch institutions hire from abroad and the best place to land
a job is in the city itself. Almost every issue of the Bangkok post carries
at least two or three advertisements for language teaching positions and
even those schools stipulating qualifications/experience necessary are
realistic enough to compromise if the applicant seems reliable and smart.

in Thailand that offer international programs, both undergraduate and graduate
level, that are taught exclusively in English. Many of these programs
are priced fairly reasonably. At Bangkok University, where I’m currently
working on an MBA, the overall cost of a master’s degree, tuition, fees
and books, is only around $5,000 and takes approximately two years to complete.

"At the opposite extreme of the Chao Phraya River in Thailand is the Rejang
River in Borneo. The Rejang is a wild river where fierce headhunters once
roamed. The Rejang River to this day spells adventure. When I set out to
explore the headwaters, my plan was to hire longboats in Kapit, the last
outpost on the Rejang, and travel up river to where the Rejang meets the
Balleh River. I would then follow the Balleh to its very source, leave
boat and there hire porters, and cross into Kalimantan in Indonesia. That
was my plan, but it didn't work out quite that way."

a water festival; you walk down any street and after five minutes you're
completely soaked from squirt guns and buckets of water thrown at you,

are deceiving you. I heard, very faintly, the echo of a gong somewhere
far off. A gong in the forest! In an instant more, it was clearer, and
louder, and mingled now with faraway voices. Then came the sound of a flute,
and another, and more gongs. I watched them grow from fuzzy silhouettes
into focus, like a camera zooming in on its subject. I could see them clearly
now, all wearing sarongs, white sarongs, and around their waists were scarlet
cummerbunds fastened with rich buckles carved in gold."

Admissions Test (MCAT), lots of extra-curricular and community activities.
While my grades and scores were above average, they weren’t “superior.”
Lastly, I lacked the tacit factors that could swing an admission -- no
family member who was a doctor, not rich, and I lacked political or other
influence. I’m not even sure where I’d have gotten the money to afford
going! Then, I discovered a medical university where the annual tuition
is $3,500, where classes are taught in English, where the MCAT isn’t required
and where my age wasn’t considered a liability, but an asset. Upon graduation,

US, compared with his home country of Poland. "As an old Polish saying
goes," writes Ryszard Krasowski, "The further in, the deeper. I had sunk
so deep I felt I'd been swallowed up by a sea of questions. I'd had
complete confidence in the clinic, so when the doctor proposed surgery,
my only concern was where I would find the money to pay for it. Why
did he tell me I had to have surgery if I didn't need it? Why did I have
to pay more for the first visit if I wasn't sure if I would have to come
back for a second visit? Maybe I'd choose to go to a different doctor.
When I was going to pay a doctor a visit in Poland, I wasn't afraid of
it. Here, in America, I am scared to death. I am scared to death, not because
I have a health problem to solve, but because the visit makes me sick even
more." All oil paintings are by the author.

items and personal belongings, US expatriates also take with them invisible
cultural baggage composed of values, beliefs, attitudes, assumptions and
expectations. How people in their host countries perceive them and
respond to them depends largely on the contents of this intangible luggage.
The advice inscribed on the ancient temple of Apollo at Delphi to “Know

cultural baggage abroad with you. But at least you can be aware of

you look, right or left, it is the wrong side of the track. Mattresses

Increased US Effort to Track Offshore Assets as a Result of Terrorism -
Don't
Tread on Me - This commentary, submitted anonymously
as a Letter the the Editor of Escape from America Magazine, reflects a
growing concern among American citizens that their right to invest abroad
and take advantage of lower taxes in foreign markets may soon be compromised
under the ruse of international terrorism. Earlier this year, the US Government
approached several tax haven nations in its effort to crack down on citizens
rights to invest overseas. Rumor has it that the US Government even threatened
to freeze US assets of foreign banks if those banks continued to withhold
investment information concerning US citizens in those countries. Some
believe the US government will begin using the ruse of terrorism in increasing
their efforts. Escape from America Magazine invites readers to send comments

Plantations
In The South Pacific - Vanish To Vanuatu - Click
Here - There are perhaps three ways to look at property:
As a productive asset, as a speculative holding, or as a lifestyle proposition.
I've spent a fair amount of time and money flying around Vanuatu to get
a grip on property, and I think it's worth considering, possibly on all
three bases.Vanuatu is certainly one of the world’s more beautiful locations.
James Michener used it as the model for Bali Hai when he wrote Tales of
the South Pacific while he was stationed here during WW II. The French
developed numerous copra plantations on the islands over the 100 years
up to independence in 1980, and they're still the dominant factor in today's
economy.

Escape Artist finds True Escape on Isla Margarita -

Here- Terry Bannon found true escape on the Isle of Margarita
off the Venezuelan Coast where he could have been satisfied just sipping
coconut milk under a swaying palm sitting on the cool swept sands of this
Caribbean island. Instead, he and his escape artist friends decided to
have a little fun. The Mosquito Coast Bar and Grill is a laid back place
enjoyed by locals, tourists, and yachties, worldwide; it's mentioned in
several guidebooks to the Caribbean, and it was named the region's best
disco by Rum and Reggae. The good life comes to escape artists who act
now.

ISLANDS
Making
Choices - Trying to Pick a New Country to Live In - Click
Here - There are opportunities everywhere. I’ve heard
from reliable sources that no one, I repeat, no one is supplying fresh
produce or vegetables on any of the American Virgin Islands. Produce
has to shipped into the Virgins from afar at great shipping cost. (causing
the available produce in V.I. markets to be high in price and dated in
flavor.) The reason for the lack of locally grown produce, or so we’ve
been told, is a scarcity of water. There are several ways to grow
fresh vegetables hydroponically that utilize low water-consumption methods.
As a matter of fact, upon hearing about that lack of fresh produce in the
Virgins I spent several days reading about hydroponic methods and thinking
about what it would take to set up such a venture. It was a rather
intriguing few days. It would be lots of hard work, but in our opinion
it would be fun, in addition to it’s having the potential of being extremely
lucrative. There are numerous nearby islands that would also be interested
in purchasing fresh produce. The venture would take some serious
research. Hydroponics is a science; but it isn’t rocket science and
we believe that anyone with a brain could learn what is required to be
successful.
