Mr Bower is
entirely correct. I have spent a lot of time in Cardenas, Tabasco. The
next English speaker I meet will be my first. This is the land of sugar
cane, corn and cacao. The second day I was there I promptly was made a
meal for las formigas(fire ants). I was admiring a sugar cane field at
the time. El Centro of Cardenas has a major bus terminal with modern buses.
These buses generally go to Villahermosa, which is the hub for Tabasco.
The bus system to the outskirts consists of old Volkswagon buses. They
generally cram 11-12 people in them. A nice feature of the system is if
you should be shopping in town, you can pay a taxista the price of a fare(
10 pesos) and he will deliver your shopping to your home. And you may continue
to go about your business. We have all heard of the sky rocketing
price of corn and tortillas in Mexico. The countryside remains unaffected
by and large. All have corn grinders and make their own tortillas at home.
The ones who sell them
, generally
have a little motor hooked up to the grinder to save a little labor. A
real home business. Many sell tacos, tamales, and empanadas right from
their homes. All homes have wood fires going to handle most of the
cooking. Even ones who have stoves with natural gas tanks.

I agree with
your top 20 reasons not to move to Dubai. My sister recently visited Dubai
and was, to put it mildly, creeped out by it. There are so many GREAT cities
to visit[London,Tokyo,Milan],they make Dubai look like A JOKE. The place
seems so sterile and devoid of personality. It seems to me that the growth
cannot be sustained. It will faulter in a decade or so like a badly concieved
amusement park.

To some
extent I agree with you, but last time I was there - a month ago,
my daughter and I were mugged, in a busy street,in a good area, in broad
daylight....my watch was removed from my wrist. I feel differently
about the place now. The Ed |

I am an American
woman who has been married to a Vietnamese man for
27 years.
My husband came to the states in 1975. We have three children and are now
"empty nesters". We are thinking of moving to Vietnam, possibly for
good but highly unlikely (talk about mid-life crisis !) Oh...but it just
gets better. My youngest son, who is also a musician, has agreed
to come with us ! and his band mate too ! I guess they're planning on becoming
"international superstars" I've visited Vietnam several times and have
very mixed feelings, but at the same time, I think to myself "why not ?"
Worst case senario, we return to our life here in good old Apple Valley,
Minnesota (yawn) Anybody have any input, advise, warnings, anything ????

I was scrolling
through your list of articles to read on travel and "Red Bags and Chocolate
Eclairs" caught
my eye. Not only did I feel like I was actually following behind these
two
women on their
travel, but that I could actually picture and hear what was going on. The
details were
so expressive and vivid. I couldn't stop reading, due to anticipation of
what
would happen
next! I see this writer becoming very successful. Well done.
