Tales
From La Ponderosa eh - sorry Estancia La Margarita - In
my last article for Escape Artist challengingly entitled “Skegness to Buenos
Aires” I told how I secretly thanked my Dad for carting us all off in his
funny looking motor bike to one of Billy Butlin's finest. I thought
that I was being smart when I wrote about Skegness and Billy Butlin and
that no one else who read my article would have heard of either.
How wrong can one be! I am pretty sure if the e-mails keep
coming I will be holding a Billy Butlin reunion on La Margarita!

Makeover Brazil - Plastic
surgery is big in Brazil. On a per capita basis, there are more certified
plastic surgeons in Brazil than in the U.S. There are about
4,100 of them compared to approximately 5,000 in the U.S. This
works out to a ratio of roughly one plastic surgeon per 44,000 vs. one
per 59,000 in the U.S. Brazil’s Plastic Surgery Society estimates
that there were 700,000 plastic surgery procedures performed in 2006, up
from 616,000 in 2004.

Panajachel
and the Guatemalan Busted Sink Mouse Trap Scam - This
story finds me in Guatemala City, backpack in tow, seeking the advice
of a cab driver as to the location of a bus station from which I might
depart for the town of Panajachel (pronounced Pana Ha Chel) situated
on Lake Atitlan, reputed to be the most beautiful Lake in the World.
Cab drivers, or “taxistas” as they are know, are not in the business
of giving free advice, but rather of ferrying paying passengers to and
fro. Accordingly, while a major terminal may exist walking distance
down the street and around the corner, he will invariably tell you that
he can take you to the “nearest” one five miles away on the outskirts of
town.

Health
Insurance:Hong Kong - As
Hong Kong continues its development more and more individuals are choosing
to either visit or permanently relocate to the city, and one of the main
issues that concerns the ever increasing number of foreign nationals and
expatriates who are moving to Hong Kong is the state of the city’s healthcare
service. Hong Kong departed from the UK style National Health Service
in 1990 with the creation of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. The
Hong Kong hospital authority, in conjunction with the Department of Health,
oversees the management of all public healthcare facilities in the City.

India:
Where Treatment Comes Gift Wrapped with a Holiday - The
best part of such a vacation is the cost. A heart surgery in the
US may make you poorer by anything between $ 50,000 to $125,000 depending
upon the kind of procedure, the hospital where it is conducted, and the
pre-and post-operative care. In India, a similar surgery will cost
you $ 7,000 on the lower side and $ 25,000 on the higher side.

Leap
of Faith - The
number of expats here is small compared to the numbers in many Central
American countries, even nearby Colombia and Venezuela. There are
no gringo-only resorts here. If you live in Ecuador, you live mostly
among middle- and upper-class Ecuadorians, or other South Americans.
You will have a handful of North American or European friends, but you
will find yourself immersed in the culture and its traditions. You
will also find yourself forced - and not always comfortably - to make your
Spanish understandable to cabbies, tailors, waiters, and the fellow down
the street.

Margarita:
A Caribbean Island Cocktail Unlike Any Other - The
minuses mostly gravitate around the popularity the island enjoys among
mainlanders, especially during vacation periods…..but more are also moving
to live here permanently, adding more pressures to local services.
Vacation time is the time when locals escape to other nearby islands, such
as Coche, or Cubagua, or to the other half of Margarita, the peninsula
of Macanao. The important issue is there are escapes, quite easy
and pleasant ones, even from here. If you have your own boat, so
much the better – there are dozens of wonderful escape routes to inhabited
and solitary islands nearby, or if it pleases, the entire Caribbean…

Gets Serious About Tourism - Panama

Panama
City: Enter the Dragon! - Panama’s
economic progress should not be coldly measured by GDP growth. The
reduction of poverty and the improvement of the living standards of the
marginalized population need to be taken into account. Regrettably,
the growing national wealth has mostly served an unmerited purpose: to
make the rich wealthier, while generally encumbering the middle classes
and making poorer the already poor. While the country is economically
booming, the gap between Rich and Poor has hardly closed.

Living
In The Philippines - Running Out of Money - Many
expats are lured to the Philippines because of the low cost to live in
a tropical paradise. It is cheap to live in many areas of the Philippines,
but know what you need and how much money is needed. Some expats
below the retirement age go in hopes of making some kind of a living in
a business scheme. Many expats have no back-up plan and many more
have little funds to draw from in an emergency. These are the expats
that are setting themselves up to fail. The only thing they can do
is return to their home country and start all over again.

Who
Is The Real Rex Freeman? - An Ex-Pat
Warriors’ Search for Freedom & Truth. What motivates
a person to expatriate and leave his home country? Economics?
Climate? Persecution? Opportunity? Lifestyle? Politics?
Maybe a combination of all of the above? The following is an historical
account of how this path evolved for one such individual who is known as
Rex Freeman and how he turned several significant obstacles into the launching
pads to his dreams. We offer this as a story of inspiration and hope!

The
Grocery Store - As
an ex-pat, shopping for food can either be an adventure or a nightmare.
If you and your family like to try new tastes, and you enjoy cooking new
dishes, half of the battle is already won. But some people like to
eat only certain food and others may find different spices or even aromas
unappetizing or even upsetting to their stomachs.

|
The
Babysitter - When
they excavated the ruins of Pompeii in 1748, the archeologists made plaster
casts of the impressions that the dying citizens of that city made in the
soft ash as it smothered them. While the inevitable couples locked
in intercourse have since garnered most of the world’s notice, to me the
most poignant image has always been that of a young girl caught by the
toxic snowfall in the act of running with an infant in her arms.
The
A to Z of Moving Overseas - Moving
overseas may sound glamorous, but it is not always easy, especially if
you do not have the support of a large corporation. I know from experience
that when going it alone, you need help - and not just with the language,
if that is an issue. This eBook is a must for anyone considering
such a big life change. It outlines succinctly the important things
to consider before making a move, and gives a wealth of information that
will help you to make your move go smoothly. |

Why
a Second Passport Could Be the Wisest Investment You Ever Make - There
are indeed many valid reasons to consider acquiring an alternative citizenship
and second passport - and, depending on your circumstances, moving to a
new place of residence.
As a citizen
and passport holder of two or more countries, you can travel or move your
residence more easily, particularly in an emergency. Should the worst
occur (such as a war, terrorist attack, etc); this flexibility could even
save your life.

Proposed
New US Exit Tax - Individuals
expatriating from the United States will face a high tax price when attempting
to take their assets with them under legislation (H.R. 3056) approved 23-18
by the House Ways and Means Committee July 18. Although the bill's
primary focus is to stop the private debt collection program at the Internal
Revenue Service, its centerpiece revenue raiser will dramatically change
the landscape for those who attempt to give up their U.S. citizenship to
escape U.S. tax on their assets.

It
Actually Is a Mountain, Seriously - It
turns out that Aokigahara Jukai (Sea of Trees) is worthy of more than just
a casual wariness. The soil that fuels Aokigahara is heavily veined
with iron which causes traditional compasses to malfunction and leaves
travelers unable to distinguish between North and South. More sinister
is its apparent strong pull on those unfortunates who find themselves wanting
to end their lives.

Exchange:
Colorado to Quebec - My
biggest barrier was the obvious language difference, as my grasp on French
was the result of several years of schooling, all taken out of a textbook.
Ranging from cereal boxes to billboards, everything was proclaimed in a
language that made little sense to me. Even a seemingly simple trip to
the grocery store was stressful, as I found people in almost any situation
would grasp any opportunity to chat with me. On several occasions when
I tried to respond to this friendly chitchat, I found myself quickly buried
under an avalanche of incomprehension.

The
Armpits of Southeast Asia - They
call us farang, and they say the worst thing about us is that we
have absolutely no patience. Perhaps the person I am most impatient
with on this trip is myself, followed closely by my friend Melissa, who
is my traveling partner. Melissa is only half farang, and
only half as impatient as me. She introduces herself as a leuk-kreung,
which translates literally as “half-kid”.

Con Dios! A Quest for Vegan Food in Spain - Like
the Americans, the Spaniards love their meat and dairy. Con mucho
gusto, they consume ducks, sheep, cattle, chicken, pork, and seafood.
Spain is an integral part of the Mediterranean cuisine touted for its taste,
variety, nutritional completeness, and health benefits. The Mediterranean
diet centers around wheat, rice and legumes, greens and vegetables, cheese
and yogurt, fish, meat, and eggs, garlic, olive oil, and fruit. It
is laced with delicious wines from the grapevines of fertile hills and
valleys. Although Spanish cuisine in particular is renowned for its
quality and variety, these delights are targeted for the palate of carnivores.

You Ever Wanted To Know About Buying A Castle |

All
You Ever Wanted To Know About Buying A Castle By Helga van Horn
- I once said that most people will do almost anything to read about buying
a castle, because it's such a fascinating subject; but few of them will
ever really go out and buy a castle. Well I wrote that before the Berlin
wall fell and the sudden surprise appearance of numerous magnificent castles
in Eastern Europe. Suddenly we were seeing castles worth buying at
prices we could afford. Then came the expat revolution, (diaspora?) and
thousands of people starting moving overseas; and what better house could
we ask for beyond a castle? That's the top of the line in housing.
...and think of the business you could run out of a castle; Bed & Breakfast,
Resort Hotel, Restaurant, Spa, Condiminium Project, Joint Ownership, Time
Share . . . you can use your own imagination to figure out dozens of use
concepts, because the greatest part of buying a castle is the dreaming.
. . . and there's money to be made with castle ownership . . .
People have
always traveled to distant parts of the world to see great buildings or
other works of art, to learn new languages, to experience new cultures,
or to taste new cuisine. As long ago as the time of the Roman Republic
places such as Baiae were popular coastal resorts for the rich. Castles
are a natural draw; always have been, always will be. They aren't building
any more 300 year old castles - supplies are limited.
Last year tourism
generated USD$ 5,490.4 billion dollars of economic activity and it is set
to generate even more in the coming years. It is perhaps the major industry
that anyone can enter - - with no limits to its growth. If you get
a castle - and if you buy it as a result of seeing it advertised on EscapeArtist.com
or as a result of reading this eBook report on buying castles, and if you're
willing to put a statement on your website stating as much; then EscapeArtist.com
will give you free advertising for your castle-run business.
Also, keep
in mind that if nothing else, traveling through Europe looking for a castle
would make an ideal vacation...
