Argentina’s
Northwest by Car - The Andes Mountain Range cuts through
this region and creates beautiful scenery just like the Rocky Mountains
in the USA. Like the Rockies, the Andes Mountains generally run North
– South with long valleys between them. However, unlike the Rockies
where the dominant wind comes from the West, the wind in these Andes blows
from the East, from the Atlantic Ocean, across a humid plain. The
temperate valleys around Salta are a traditional center for the Argentine
cowboys, called gauchos in Spanish, and the large ranches, called estancias
in Argentina. Some of the oldest estancias in Argentina are in this
area and they are filled with history. The Argentine cowboys, the
gauchos, fought in the War of Independence from Spain in the early part
of the 19th century.

Australia:
Love It Or Leave It? - Similarities
to the United States are unfortunately much more numerous and prevalent
than they were five years ago. American companies are everywhere
now: McDonalds, KFC, Target, K-Mart, Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin Robbins,
good god, they even have Curves, and those are only the obvious ones. Hungry
Jacks is really Burger King and Big W is Walmart in thinly cloaked disguise.
As far as omnipotent megacorporations go, they have Coles and Woolworths
controlling 85% of the nation’s grocery sales. I used to think Walmart’s
15% market share was scary.

Immigrating
to Morden, Manitoba, Canada - Morden
is a beautiful small town situated in rural southern Manitoba. The population
is 6,500 people. Actually, the town’s proud boast is that we were
described in the prestigious Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine - 2004 as
one of ten “Best In Country Living” places in Canada. The very life blood
of this whole region is based on farming and agriculture.

Oddballs
In Chile - I get the feeling that
the Chileans think we’re a bit odd. We’re tallish, blondish, and
have chosen to live in a country where we know no one. But one of
the major factors is that at the age of 36 and 32 respectively, Gary and
I are not married, we don’t have kids, and I don’t make jam. The not-married
terminology puts me in my place regularly.

Killing
Fields of South Africa: Elephants in the Crosshairs of Extinction
- I see the human-elephant “conflict”
as a microcosm of a planetary social and ecological crisis brought about
by globalization, underdevelopment, insatiable resource extraction, and
the violent and hierarchical domination of human over human and human over
nature. The approach of the South African government, park system,
and people toward the “elephant problem” has global significance and is
an indicator of whether or not humankind as a whole can steer itself away
from imminent disaster and learn to harmonize its existence with the natural
world.

Most transfers take place between May and September and according to U.S.

thousands of Americans like you are contemplating or undergoing a move

Worried
About Dragging Your Kids Around the World?Don't be. Here's Why. - In
the early 1960’s, doctors Ruth and John Useem coined the term Third Culture
Kid (TCK) to describe a population that’s growing bigger every year and
that has special advantages and problems: "[A] person who has spent
a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents'
culture, a third culture kid, builds relationships to all of the cultures,
while not having full ownership in any,” they wrote. “Although elements
from each culture are assimilated into the third culture kid's life experience,
the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of the same background."
(Pollock & van Reken, 2001, p. 19).

Things
To Plan Before Moving Away From America - It’s ok, you can
admit it - at least once in your life you’ve dreamed of quitting your job,
quietly leaving the country and going somewhere where no one can ever find
you again? If you’ve ever looked into this in any detail you have
probably noticed that giving up your life in the United States and moving
to another country is more difficult and time consuming than you may have
thought. There are probably things that you haven’t ever thought
about that you must do before you book your ticket to paradise.

Life
On Board a Boat - My experience living on board was brief,
but sweet. I have friends who live on their trimaran on the North
American west coast, a little north of San Francisco. Wilma lived
in an apartment on the marina before she met her partner and chose to abandon
her conventional lifestyle and move in with him. Her first task was
to trim down her life in a 3 bedroom apartment to fit, with another person,
into a 45 ft trimaran.

Living
in Mexico: Lord of the Flies? - I've
been wracking my small and insignificant brain lately trying to come up
with a way of describing the colonies American gringos start in the Mexican
towns in which they congregate. Mind you, I am operating under a
tremendous bias lately and if I seem a bit hyperbolic, you will have to
forgive me. I am thinking that perhaps I've had one too many threats
and the fire, my Lord the fire, was what really has set me on edge about
the whole thing.

country of Panama is promoting foreign investment, and residential tourism
is one of the major bets of the Government. When moving into Panama one
important thing that should be considered is your financial security and

about immigration, property acquisition and estate planning, issues that
should be considered before doing any investment in the country.

Arequipa,
Peru - A Place to Retire - We
stroll a few blocks to the impressive Plaza de Armas. This is one
of the largest and most beautiful central plazas in Peru. On the
north side is the awesome, twin-towered Cathedral, founded in 1612 and
largely rebuilt in the 19th Century after having been repeatedly damaged
by earthquakes and fire. In 2001 the two towers collapsed again in
an earthquake, but have now been rebuilt and reinforced.

Singapore:
An Expatriate Destination - Singapore was and is still an
extremely popular expatriate destination. It offers a myriad of possibilities
to anyone wishing to make a home here. According to the Singapore
Economic Development Board, this island nation is the second most attractive
environment for highly skilled foreigners and Asia's number one place to
live and work. It is also Asia’s least bureaucratic place for doing
business.

Fair - I took
my wife Mem and our son Andy to a temple fair at Wat Chalong last week.
When I first came to Phuket, the fairs at the island’s biggest temple were
simple country things; a dozen booths selling cheap clothing and house
wares arranged around a small oval track on which ran an ancient miniature
locomotive pulling five cars full of screaming, happy kids.

The
Mañana Complex - The
tradition of putting things off until tomorrow--or next month--is as endemic
in Ecuador as it is in other Latin American countries. If the carpenter
tells you he will have your bookcase finished in two weeks, expect it in
two months. If you've booked the washing machine repairman or Internet
installer to come Thursday afternoon, be prepared for disappointment.
(Although you can alter the status quo through sheer persistence--reconfirm
appointments by phone the morning they are scheduled, and show the carpenter
no mercy.)

No Qualifications Needed - There
are many things we all think about doing in life, but somehow end up postponing
and procrastinating. Better late than never, though, as they say, and at
the ripe old age of thirty, I had just come back from having had a great

some more overseas travel, I saw an ad for an agency looking for English
teachers to work in Japan.

would you like to go halfway across the most expensive country in the world,

expensive countries, yet there are extraordinary bargains to be found.
One of them is the opportunity to travel across the country for the price
of two movie tickets. Do you like to surf? Then you can go all the
way from Tokyo to southern Japan’s largest city, Fukuoka, a distance of
1175 kilometers (730 miles). Or, if you prefer skiing, how about
going to the northern city of Akita, a distance of 659 kilometers (409
miles)? In either case, it only costs you $20.

Brazil's
Classic Alpine Escape - The Itatiaia region has gone through
many changes in the past. The area where the Park lies today, which
is located between the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São
Paulo was once the property of the Viscount of Mauá. The Brazilian
government bought it from him in 1908. The Emperor Dom Pedro II had
bought the land to grow cold weather fruits. He sent European immigrants
there to cultivate the land, yet the plantations never yielded good crops
owing to the poor soil and the project failed.

All
You Ever Wanted To Know About Buying A Castle By Helga van Horn
- I once said that most people will do almost anything to read about buying
a castle, because it's such a fascinating subject; but few of them will
ever really go out and buy a castle. Well I wrote that before the Berlin
wall fell and the sudden surprise appearance of numerous magnificent castles
in Eastern Europe. Suddenly we were seeing castles worth buying at
prices we could afford. Then came the expat revolution, (diaspora?) and
thousands of people starting moving overseas; and what better house could
we ask for beyond a castle? That's the top of the line in housing.
...and think of the business you could run out of a castle; Bed & Breakfast,
Resort Hotel, Restaurant, Spa, Condiminium Project, Joint Ownership, Time
Share . . . you can use your own imagination to figure out dozens of use
concepts, because the greatest part of buying a castle is the dreaming.
. . . and there's money to be made with castle ownership . . .
People have
always traveled to distant parts of the world to see great buildings or
other works of art, to learn new languages, to experience new cultures,
or to taste new cuisine. As long ago as the time of the Roman Republic
places such as Baiae were popular coastal resorts for the rich. Castles
are a natural draw; always have been, always will be. They aren't building
any more 300 year old castles - supplies are limited.
Last year tourism
generated USD$ 5,490.4 billion dollars of economic activity and it is set
to generate even more in the coming years. It is perhaps the major industry
that anyone can enter - - with no limits to its growth. If you get
a castle - and if you buy it as a result of seeing it advertised on EscapeArtist.com
or as a result of reading this eBook report on buying castles, and if you're
willing to put a statement on your website stating as much; then EscapeArtist.com
will give you free advertising for your castle-run business.
Also, keep
in mind that if nothing else, traveling through Europe looking for a castle
would make an ideal vacation...
