| Gardens of Stone - One of the interesting things about the English language press in Thailand is how widely it is distributed. I’ve seen copies of The Nation on the racks next to Thai Rath and Grisly Auto Accident Photo Weekly in Rayong, Ranong and Yala. Every time I ask the vendor if he actually sells them, I learn that there is a Danish marine biologist doing dugong research in the local estuary, or a Japanese engineer at the local sugar cane mill, who buys the paper religiously. We foreigners are scattered far and wide throughout the Kingdom, and sometimes we’re found in very odd places, doing very odd things. |

|
| Japan: Runs Like Brush Srokes - I moved to Japan from Seattle just over a month ago bringing with me a few changes of clothes, 8 good novels, one japanese dictionary, my laptop, and my running shoes, each of which was equally important. I have been running seriously for a slight bit more than a year yet it has become a part of my life as much as anything else. |

|
| Worldwide Health Insurance - There are many individuals and professional sources identifying the need for people around the world to obtain quality health insurance, and in the case of expatriates, quality international health insurance. However, while there are many resources dedicated to explaining, in great deal, the particulars of any health insurance plans, one area tends to leave many people confused and puzzled. |

|
| The Future of Folk Art - Mexico’s indigenous and folk art is in danger of extinction. This is not an exaggeration; many of the world’s cultures have lost most of their indigenous art due to the same hardships that face Mexican artists today. |

| Philippines: Puerto Princesa, the Cleanest and Greenest City - Puerto Princesa City, located on Palawan Island, is the largest city, by area, in the Philippines. You can travel two hours north or south and still be inside of the city limits. The city measures 140 km north to south and 50 km east to west. It is a priceless emerald of eco-tourism. Puerto has won a slue of international awards and has repeatedly been voted the “Cleanest and Greenest” city in The Philippines. With 75% forest cover, Puerto is one of the largest sanctuaries of old growth and replanted forest in the world. |

| After America - During my two years in Seattle, my last two in the States, I began researching a book on the case for expatriation. I hadn’t fled the country yet, so I decided to table the project until I could speak from experience. Now that I’ve lived abroad for a couple of years, I feel more strongly than ever that leaving was the right decision. |

| Relocation to Thailand (and Beyond)/contd. - Today was a benchmark day for me as I filed for Social Security. I’ve been waiting to get this done for quite sometime and consider this as one of those memorable days! Actually, I definitely feel this day to be one of the first major stepping-stones in my becoming an expat/retiree. I was told to expect to be in the Social Security office for about an hour. I guess luck was with me as I was done in about 20 minutes. |

|
| Chile: Trees, Rivers And A Belching Volcano - Buying our house and developing it into “Chalet Pucón” has been great practice for the Chilean property and tourism markets and a lesson in bureaucracy. Used to doing business in a professional English environment, the Chilean manner of things is taking some adjustment (on both sides). Add to that the fact that, while Gary is fluent in Spanish, I’m limited to the present and simple past, and you can start to understand some of the everyday challenges and constant embarrassment I’m up against. |

|
| Cork Screwed - History has it that a Benedictine monk called Dom Perignon first used cork in the neck of a bottle of sparkling wine in the 1600s; hitherto oiled rags and wood chips had done the trick. Since then, the use of a cork in bottles, particularly for wine, has become the norm; in fact, we automatically call the stopper a ‘cork’. Over 15 billion cork stoppers are produced and sold worldwide every year, to the wine industry. |

| Investing For Overseas Living - One of your most important assignments as a foreign investor would be to find out which investments you are allowed to make as an expatriate, and which you are restricted from making. This will vary from one country to another - there's no way to make a blanket statement, so you just have to find out what the case is locally. |

| Egyptian Math - Twenty-two million people live in the city full-time, and another 2 million travel in and out each day for work. On top of this are the tourists. Busloads and busloads of them, amounting to more than 8 million each year. The Chinese come in greatest numbers, year-round…mostly, our guide believes, for the perfumes. On the streets and at the sights, you hear many languages. This is pre-season, yet the Egyptian Museum was so crowded we had to hold hands to stay together and bend close in our huddle to hear our guide's comments over those of all the other guides competing for attention. Evidently, in peak season, the guides give up. They give overviews out front, telling their tour-goers what to look for inside, then pull their groups through the throngs single-file. |

| Buenos Aires: The Paris of South America - The birthplace of tango and the heir of gaucho (Latin cowboy) endurance and pride, Buenos Aires enjoys worldwide fame - and rightly so - for its exquisite leather goods, superb Malbec wines, savory steaks, inexpensive plastic surgery and (draw your own conclusions) beautiful women. However, those are only a few of the reasons travelers are suddenly flocking to Argentina... and in some cases, never going home. |

| Cordillera Central – A Trip to Santa Fe Panama - Panama isn’t Patagonia with vast distances to travel; you’re always a tank full of gas away from a sizable city, especially if you’re driving a gas sipping little Toyota like we were. Santa Fe was only about 30-miles from Santiago, and even if you were inclined to go much further into the Cordillera you would run out of paved highway in Santa Fe. |

Escape
Artist Travel Magazine - Online January 2007 ~ The travel magazine
with a point of view; a world-view. EscapeArtist Travel Magazine is about
more than travel; it is about personal exploration through world travel.
EscapeArtist Travel is for the independent traveler passionately seeking
an interactive cultural experience, meeting local people, examining cultural
conditions and exploring unknown lands. A Travel Magazine with an attitude
- Yes; our travel magazine has an attitude, slighty iconoclastic, defintely
cutting edge, and willing to take risks, both in attitude and in content.
We're going to tell you a host of valuable travel tricks - - as self-aware
independent travelers we've learned how to travel where we want and how
we want, totally free from meaningless and unnecessary constraints - -
constraints that may serve the interests of politicians, snoops, and purloiners
with vested interests, but which do nothing to serve your personal, intellectual,
financial and psychological best interest. When we travel, and we travel
often, we travel using methods not written about in the Sunday travel section
of your local newspaper. It's not some sort of super secret insiders information
we're talking about; and it certainly isn't illegal; it is just the type
of information that doesn't serve the interests of those who want to control
your life, so it hasn't been widely disseminated. |

All You Ever Wanted To Know About Buying A Castle By Helga van Horn - I once said that most people will do almost anything to read about buying a castle, because it's such a fascinating subject; but few of them will ever really go out and buy a castle. Well I wrote that before the Berlin wall fell and the sudden surprise appearance of numerous magnificent castles in Eastern Europe. Suddenly we were seeing castles worth buying at prices we could afford. Then came the expat revolution, (diaspora?) and thousands of people starting moving overseas; and what better house could we ask for beyond a castle? That's the top of the line in housing. ...and think of the business you could run out of a castle; Bed & Breakfast, Resort Hotel, Restaurant, Spa, Condiminium Project, Joint Ownership, Time Share . . . you can use your own imagination to figure out dozens of use concepts, because the greatest part of buying a castle is the dreaming. . . . and there's money to be made with castle ownership . . . People have always traveled to distant parts of the world to see great buildings or other works of art, to learn new languages, to experience new cultures, or to taste new cuisine. As long ago as the time of the Roman Republic places such as Baiae were popular coastal resorts for the rich. Castles are a natural draw; always have been, always will be. They aren't building any more 300 year old castles - supplies are limited.
Last year tourism generated USD$ 5,490.4 billion dollars of economic activity and it is set to generate even more in the coming years. It is perhaps the major industry that anyone can enter - - with no limits to its growth. If you get a castle - and if you buy it as a result of seeing it advertised on EscapeArtist.com or as a result of reading this eBook report on buying castles, and if you're willing to put a statement on your website stating as much; then EscapeArtist.com will give you free advertising for your castle-run business.
Also, keep in mind that if nothing else, traveling through Europe looking for a castle would make an ideal vacation... |
