| SECTION ONE - LIVING OVERSEAS - INTERNATIONAL RELOCATION |
How To Choose A Country For Retirement or Investment - How do most people decide on which country to move to?The average person would probably weigh factors like weather, cost of living, proximity to home, the experiences they had while a tourist in that country, and how they generally felt while visiting that country. In other words, they had a good tourist experience in a particular country, so they want to live there as a long term resident.
While this approach has its advantages – it also has some drawbacks. |
| Singapore: Living, Working and Doing Business - Situated at the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula with a land area of 685.4 km2, Singapore is an island-state with a 4.2 million population.Modern Singapore was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. Only until the “rightful” Johorean heir agreed to sell the island to the British that it became a colony. Widely known and recorded by many sojourners as Temasek - Sea Town - by the 14th century, Singapore was part of the Sri Vijayan empire. |
| A Puncher’s Chance - To understand a place, culture or a people you need to integrate yourself into the daily life of the country. You need to learn the language. But most importantly, you need to participate in activities, clubs, and associations with local people. For me, martial art is often my gateway to a foreign culture. As soon as I land in a new country, I join the martial arts school and immediately, I am surrounded by new friends, who give me an insight into their culture, which few foreigners would ever experience. |
| Wine Idols - Wine used to just go with food, but now people realise it goes very well with fame too. From a commercial point of view it makes perfect sense. A winery gains a certain edge if it has an idol endorsing it. It doesn´t matter if that same idol is long decanted such as Marilyn Monroe. Her Marilyn Merlot might be disappointing, but you`ve just got to try it. Another is Sting of Police fame. His labels come numbered and autographed, prompting inevitable jokes about it having a message in a bottle. |
| A Soon-to-be-Expat’s Relocation to Thailand (and Beyond) - This is after all the Land of Smiles. I’m not dreaming this. It is however, my personal vision of my very near future. You see, I’m in what I call my “pre-expat” mode (according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary; the definition of expatriate is: to leave one's native country to live elsewhere). Now, there are numerous reasons why one chooses to become an Expat. In my case there are a few but the biggest of all is “money” (as in the lack of it), especially since I’m basically going to survive on Social Security. Then of course, there’s that great big catastrophic storm cloud that’s being prophesized for the U.S.A. in the very near future (both financially and politically). |
| Four Years of Living Dangerously In Taiwan - It is said that the first step in any journey is the hardest. In an Asian country it should be said that the first one hundred steps is the hardest. If I didn’t have a clue what was happening in Scotland Taiwan left me completely lost. Everything in Taiwan is in Taiwanese or Mandarin. Quite a surprise considering they deal with a worldwide market on a daily basis but the place is pretty unschooled on the way of English and English conversation. After four years and being an Australian in Taipei I never want to hear “Oh your koala very cute” ever again. There is an off chance that if I do encounter a koala I may have to punch it in the face as a result. Even a pretty koala looks ugly with a broken nose. |
| Why and How I Became An Escape Artist - Generally, when we think of escape artists, we Harry Houdini comes to mind. But there are other kinds of escape artists, too – including you and me. I believe deeply that each of us is a little like Houdini, capable of freeing ourselves from the shackles we wear. Each of us has the inherent power to transport ourselves out of our straitjacketed misery into a better world. The way to do so is to sit quietly for a little while, try to shut off the world, and enter a new one of our own making. |
| 13 Not So Conventional Reasons to Love Panama - There is no doubt that Panama possesses numerous advantages, including its strategic geographic location, incentive program for retirees and a relatively low-cost of living, amongst others. However, some of the reasons that I particularly enjoy living in Panama are not the most obvious, such as The Canal (after showing my 4th visitor the Miraflores Locks, the outing becomes slightly monotonous) or its proximity to Miami (I’ve never been to Miami in my life!). Certain pleasures can only be recognized after living in Panama as a foreigner for some time. |
| Single White Female In incredible India - I thought back on my arrival, one month earlier, at Indira Gandhi International airport. Although it was the day before Thanksgiving, the thermometer oozed over 85. The locals were in saris, kurtas, or thin oxford shirts that they paired with anything from traditional Indian bottoms to distressed Levis. Sandals were de rigeur. In my black pants and leather boots, I might has well have been arriving from another planet. |
| The Second Golden Age of Belize - You can’t pick up a newspaper in Belize City these days without reading a story about some
one-man art show. Nor can you watch television without seeing a notice of a new exhibition or an
interview with an artist who just ended his show. It is a good sign. It means Belize is enjoying a
new wave of prosperity. |
| Meanwhile.... |
| Game, Set
and Match - No strawberries and cream, no large ladies in matching
blazers…no Cyclops…this was certainly not Wimbledon, and the only similarity
with that famous tournament was the astonishingly high standard of play. |

| SECTION TWO - OFFSHORE REAL ESTATE / INTERNATIONAL REAL ESTATE |
| Property in Bulgaria: The EU’s Newest Member State - One of the Bulgaria’s main attractions in the global real estate market is that despite its European location, its property prices are not European. At least not yet. They have been rising continuously in recent years thus rewarding early buyers. Bulgaria is a country rich in history. During its 1300 year existence, it has been subjected to many different cultural influences. The old parts of the Bulgarian towns still retain awesome specimens of architectural styles typical for the 1920s, 30s. And it is not impossible to buy a very old house (for example more than 100 years old) at a quite reasonable price. |
| Buying property in France - French people generally do not buy property as a speculative investment but as a place in which they intend to live and settle down. Many homes remain in the family for generations and there is a high level of second home ownership, either a cottage in the country or a seaside villa or apartment. Even though such properties may be used infrequently and only for holidays, they often do not come onto the market until the death of parents and where the younger generations prefer to travel to cheaper holiday destinations outside France. |
| The Boom In Mexico Real Estate And How To Cash In - As little as 4 years ago, the growth began. Skyscrapers climbed to the sky. Condos began selling for $300-$500000US dollars, not pesos, the official currency. Houses with oceanfront that could be bought 6 years ago for $60k, climbed into the $150K range. Bare jungle that used to sell for $1000 a hectare (1 hectare=approx.2.2 acres) is now going for over $50K, depending on location. |
| SECTION THREE - JOBS OVERSEAS / INTERNATIONAL EMPLOYMENT |
| Krakow: Old World City With Modern Charms - Having learned my mistake by going to the big-name Real Estate Agencies in Prague, where I was required to pay one month’s rent over to the agent, I instead went to the Student Agency in Krakow, which charged little or no fee. These agencies are used to dealing with students so there are also usually more bargains to be found. I was also able to quickly select the place I wanted, from a list of available places listed by area, size, and amenities available. I was rented a 90m apartment, right in the center of town, for a little over $300 a month, plus utilities. I recommend taking your time to find these apartments, as the ones listed with the agencies catering to foreigners will definitely be higher priced. |
| The Wild, Wild West (Coast of New Zealand) - Before hitting the black sand I stopped to admire the warning signs posted everywhere! Strong rip currents, unstable cliffs, and dangerous swimming signs were at every entrance. Two orange and red flags were positioned on the beach and swimmers were instructed to only swim between the flags to keep the rescues easier to spot. (My first day there had over 20 rescues.) I was tired, and jet lagged so maybe I would just dip my toes today. Swimming and surfing could wait. |

| SECTION FOUR - OFFSHORE INVESTMENT / ASSET PROTECTION / PRIVACY |
| Right to Surrender U.S. Citizenship - As a national political issue, expatriation is hardly new. In the Foreign Investors Tax Act of 1966, Congress decided to make an issue of expatriation. In that Act, lawmakers tried to impose onerous taxes on exiting wealthy Americans who relinquished their U.S. citizenship "with the principal purpose of avoiding" U.S. taxes, a highly subjective intention that was virtually impossible to prove. The IRS couldn't prove such "intent" and very rarely even tried. |
| Foreign Earned Income Exclusion - The goal of this article is to provide a comprehensive checklist of information for the US person to consider prior to accepting an assignment outside the US. This article is not intended to teach you the technical competence required to perform self compliance, however it will certainly arm you with the knowledge to determine if your US tax preparer knows all that they should know to provide you with technically competent professional services. |

| SECTION FIVE - UNIQUE TRAVEL - EXPATRIATE TRAVEL |
| Mystical Varanasi - Varanasi has been a centre of learning and civilization for over two thousand years; this ancient city finds mention in many Indian epics. Activity prevailed here when Greece and Rome did not exist; it was a flourishing centre of trade when Buddha came to Sarnath, some 10 km away, to preach his first sermon in 500 B.C. The city continues to draw Sanskrit scholars and students from all over the world. |

| Panama During the Rainy Season - After reading many articles on moving to Panama, one item kept coming up. Rain. Living in Tucson, Arizona, one is not used to daily rain. It seemed wise then to visit during the rainiest part of the year, figuring if we liked it then, we would love it during dry season. What we didn't count on was the cold. |

Escape Artist Travel Magazine - Escape Artist Travel Magazine - Online January 2007 ~ The travel magazine with a point of view; a world-view. EscapeArtist Travel Magazine is about more than travel; it is about personal exploration through world travel. EscapeArtist Travel is for the independent traveler passionately seeking an interactive cultural experience, meeting local people, examining cultural conditions and exploring unknown lands. A Travel Magazine with an attitude - Yes; our travel magazine has an attitude, slighty iconoclastic, defintely cutting edge, and willing to take risks, both in attitude and in content. We're going to tell you a host of valuable travel tricks - - as self-aware independent travelers we've learned how to travel where we want and how we want, totally free from meaningless and unnecessary constraints - - constraints that may serve the interests of politicians, snoops, and purloiners with vested interests, but which do nothing to serve your personal, intellectual, financial and psychological best interest. When we travel, and we travel often, we travel using methods not written about in the Sunday travel section of your local newspaper. It's not some sort of super secret insiders information we're talking about; and it certainly isn't illegal; it is just the type of information that doesn't serve the interests of those who want to control your life, so it hasn't been widely disseminated. |
