I am the author of All Over the
Place Like a Mad Woman's Breakfast, from which the article Little Things
on a Big Island is based. I would like to reply to a comment from
one of the readers, Mr. James Paterson, who writes:
Comments: "Little Things on a Big
Island"
I must say that though I strongly
disagreed with what the author said about Vegemite - which is part of my
breakfast fifty percent of the time - this was a thoroughly entertaining
piece of writing.
However, I have SERIOUS difficulty
believing that in the US there is an infinitely larger selection of canned
soups and breakfast cereals. I know Australia is a much smaller market,
but surely the supermarkets couldn't have room for so much stuff.
In particular, I find it hard to
believe that many breakfast cereals in the US include marshmallow. Not
only does that sound nauseating, it couldn't possibly be healthy. Could
you ask the writer to furnish proof of this dubious proposition?
James Paterson
*******************
First of all I would like to thank
Mr. Paterson for his gracious comments regarding the article. I hope he
finds it interesting enough to explore the entire e-book.
In regards to proof regarding the
marshmallow content of U.S. breakfasts cereals, I offer the following:
"A quick walk down the breakfast
cereal aisle (and it does consist of an entire aisle, sometimes two) and
one can find the following marshmallow laden offerings: Rice Krisies Treats,
Spongebob Squarepants, Smorz, Booberry, Count Chocula, Frankenberry and
Lucky Charms. This is without even looking hard and does not even begin
to explore standard multi-flavored, ridiculously sugared varities of cereal.
I would hazard to guess that 90% of the cereals offered in the U.S. offer
no particular health benefit (and may even be detrimental) other than providing
nourishment. Addressing the shear amount of offerings in U.S. supermarkets,
it is hard to believe but no less true. in fact, while living in Australia,
our neighbors (who had resided for a time in the United States) would tell
us that one of the things they missed most was the enormous markets and
all they had to offer. Diane would comment on how they spend the whole
day there and were in awe of all the products."
Again, I thank you for your comments
and hope that I addressed your query.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Kozlowski

I would like
to read more articles like the one this month by Elijah Perry. It
is a lot closer to my reality. My husband is a heavy equipment operator,
working himself into an earlier grave 50 to 60 hours a week. I was
an investigator, injured years ago and receiving a pitiful 627 dollars
a month in Social Security. My medicine is nearly that much a month. We
are in our 40's. We cannot afford to live in our own country.
Our government, as it stands today, is a source of shame. We are
looking for sanctuary not a chunk of pristine beach being turned into an
enclave for wealthy people looking take advantage of the poor locals.
This has already happened to us in THIS country. We had to move from
the lower Keys for this very reason.
Thank you,
