Living Overseas
Island Fever ~ Moving To Fiji ~ by Susan Rungo-de Geus - We had this crazy dream. It’s a common one … a captivating one even. But one that was, for most people, but a dream. The dream was to pack up and take off and live on a beautiful South Pacific island. Islands that seem to float, adrift, on impossibly blue seas. Places of paradise untouched by the ravages of industrial man. For us, this is a dream we dream while we are awake.
Fear And Loathing In Fortaleza ~ Robin In Brazil's Northeast - Part Two ~ by Robin Sparks - It’s true that Fortaleza has one of the sunniest climates in the world with year-round temperatures hovering in the low to mid 80's. If you don’t mind relentless wind, it may be perfect for you. But I happen to dislike wind (a lot), and the sight of so many aging white men in bermuda shorts on the arms of young brown women in tight short skirts and stacked heels, just intensified the ick factor for me.
Living On Antigua And Barbuda ~ Interview With Greg Urlwin ~ by Susan Noyce - A life at sea sounds like a dream to many. Others would wish for a mixture of land and ocean. Ferrying people and cargo between Antigua and Barbuda, Greg Urlwin has found the perfect blend. In the early 80's, Urlwin decided he wanted to follow in his uncle's wake, and sail to the Caribbean.
Culture Shock Within The Same Culture ~ The Differences Between Buenos Aires And The Rest Of Argentina ~ by Jaime Russell - When I was an exchange student here in Argentina (I’m originally from the US) one thing that all of the exchange students noticed was that for the first few weeks (or even months) you were always tired.
When I First Discovered Escape Artist Magazine I Was Looking To Do Just That, Escape! ~ Escape To The Marshall Islands ~ by George Johnson - I don’t know what your motivation is in wanting to “escape” to exotic lands, meet new friends and experience special cultures and customs but, for me I was just tired of the same old same old. I had lost my fiancé to another man.
Tasting And Toasting In Tasmania ~ Travel In Tasmania ~ by Dawnelle Salant - Tasmania is one of Australia’s most often overlooked states, which is a shame because the island state has plenty of hidden sights to delight visitors. Hobart, the state capital and second oldest city in Australia, is an impressive city on another spectacular harbor. I arrive on December 30th, the day after the yachts in the famous Sydney to Hobart yacht race had arrived, and the harbor is packed with exotic yachts.
A Look Back Into The Future ~ Africa And Latin America ~ by Jurgen Klemann - After putting my grades for the winter semester on ITESM’s computer platform and wrapping my classes up, my one month winter vacation/holiday could start. It goes without saying that leaving Colima during that time didn’t even deserve to be called a remote option. Colima in winter comes quite close to what I’m fond of calling “bloody marvellous”. From November to typically April or May the weather tends to be very warm without humidity.
Travel To Costa Rica ~ Along The Pacific Coast ~ by Matthew Atlee - We wanted to go to Hungary, at least that was the plan last year, but the plans had changed and so we decided to visit Costa Rica instead. Costa Rica in December is great: the rains end and the dry weather and cool dry breezes begin to blow through the Central Valley of Costa Rica where the towns of San José, Alajuela, Cartago and Heredia are located.
Abandon The Rat Race ~ Become A Caretaker Overseas ~ by Gary Dunn - Bob and Camille Armantrout could hardly contain their excitement as they packed for their next adventure. They had recently responded to an ad in The Caretaker Gazette and received an offer. In a couple of weeks they were leaving Maui, Hawaii to assumemanagement responsibilities at Casa Iguana on Little Corn Island off the coast of Nicaragua.
Nectar Of The Gods ~ Wine On Corfu ~ by Janet Darbey - The huge hornets, bright yellow and black striped minature helicopters, buzz around the huge black wooden vat outside the taverna. The air is thick with the smell of ripe fruit and the flowers in the pots that surround the car park area. The village atmosphere is one of happiness and celebration, hard work and old traditions that go back to ancient times.
Advice On Finding A Job In Taiwan ~ Six Months In Taiwan ~ by Daniel Wallace - This is a guide to coming to Taiwan as an English teacher, but it is not a complete one. It is a list of things to do and try, rather than a list of things to avoid or be careful of. At the end of the piece I will give some links to other, more comprehensive information sources, if you are interested in doing further research. There is a huge amount of complaining about Taiwan on the Internet, and as I really like living here, I want to give my positive advice on how to come here and get a good life sorted out.
With Residency In Argentina, I Am A Member Of Mercosur ~ Residency In Argentina ~ by Delores Johnson - Many people do not know what Mercosur is. I did not know before moving to Buenos Aires eighteen months ago. Mercosur is a political and economic bloc of countries, similar to the European Union. Five countries in South America: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela are members. Five other South American countries are associate members: Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

The Most Beautiful Place You've Never Heard Of ~ Living In Southern Chile ~ by Douglas Harris - Only the most geographically challenged have never heard of Patagonia, a few can name a location like San Carlos Bariloche, Argentina which has been famous with skiers for years and is becoming popular with world travelers flocking to the Lake District. Beyond Bariloche, the map of Patagonia is blank.
Doctor’s Visits, Dental Checkups, Physical Therapy ~ What It Costs To Be Well In Six Of Latin America’s Top Havens ~ by The Staff Of International Living - The following article estimates the cost of healthcare in six very popular Latin American countries. If you are thinking of moving to Latin America then the above article should give you an idea as to how much you can expect to pay in healthcare.
Moving To Chile, Part Three ~ Feliz y Prospero Año Nuevo! ~ by Bonnie and Gary Paulsson - What a momentous and unexpectedly poignant year we have just finished wrapping up and storing away! We hope this bit of correspondence from our home in the heart of Chile finds each and every one of you healthy and happy! Hopefully you have been enjoying our commentary as we "struggle" to enjoy the beautiful summer days and warm nights as well.
Walk In Their Shoes ~ Tips On Dealing With Staff In The Dominican Republic ~ by Ginnie Bedggood - Most new residents in the Dominican Republic, certainly the retiree population, will have weekly if not daily contact with a maid (cleaning lady) and gardener, so I'll start there and come on to other contractors and employees later. We have had the most marvellous cleaning lady for the past 10 years; she is now part of our family. But unfortunately, illness has put her on long term sick leave, although, of course her job is always here when she recovers sufficiently.
More On Living In Joao Pessoa ~ Brazil's Best Kept Secret ~ by Richard Conti - We were so lucky last year while vacationing in Natal, Brazil. However, Natal had little to do with our luck as we were not all that impressed with the goings on there or the general area for that matter. After hearing so much about beautiful Northeast Brazil we had actually became a bit discouraged about what we had heard and read as none of it seemed to be true.
Adventures In Costa Rica ~ Tale Of Two Joses ~ by Kevin Barker - Nestled within that vast cordillera which defines the east and west of Central America lies a charming little town called San Antonio de Escazu. Everyone in Costa Rica knows it. Only a select few know what lies along a precipitous dirt road which climbs the mountain behind it. There, in the third of five humble row houses edging a ravine, is where I can be found.
Finding And Eating The Best Cashews Money Can’t Buy! ~Adventures In Panama ~ by Ernesto Mendiola - It started as an after thought. After all, we were on our way home from visiting our future home site in Las Brisas del Frances, Boquete, to the town of Atalaya in the Province of Veraguas and still had several hours of driving time ahead of us.
Bullfight ~ From Mexico ~ by Dru Pearson - Carrie invited me on a Sunday outing. Her friends, Maria and Juan, had invited Carrie, Ella, and me to join them, their children’s families, and six cattlemen from Nebraska for a bullfight. We first stopped by the hacienda, built in 1540, to meet Maria and get the tickets. The hacienda, located in a small Zapopan town near Guadalajara, was positioned directly across from the village church—the proximity a sign of the hacienda’s prominence in the life of the town.
Christmas & New Year On Margarita Island  ~ Tropical Holiday ~ by Scott Boswell - Just as in most of the rest of the world, the colored lights are strung along the the major roadways, houses are decorated, and stores are abundantly stocked in anticipation of the shopping frenzy. Homes are repaired, painted, and ‘spruced up’ to be ready for all the visiting friends and relatives, and parties are everywhere! In my neighborhood alone one house had 24 cars parked around it!
On The Coast Of Spain ~ A Look At The Ecology Of Coastal Livng ~ by Paul Read - Over the last twelve months, we have seen nature at its most unforgiving: whilst the tragic tsunami hit Asia, Spain experienced freak frosts that decimated crops and fruit trees followed up a drought that many believe is one of the worst in living memory. This summer, whilst the USA was hit by Katrina we have witnessed jelly-fish invasions on the coast and tornados in Barcelona.
Being An Expat In China ~ In China During The Bombing In Belgrade ~ by Shane Jackson - Sitting just outside Richard's Pub puffing on the day's one and only reflection. It was warm and dry, small plastic shopping bags and other pieces of random garbage blew by. The scooter's scurried past like so many petro-powered cockroaches spewing thick blue oily smoke into the air for all to breathe. Small children stood on the running boards of the scooters between mom's rippling skirt and the steering yoke, attention riveted forward with absolute glee.

It's a place where you can spend the day fishing without trying to keep up with the Jones's. It's also become one of the hottest expatriate destinations in Latin America. ...it's not for everyone, but it may be for you. Dubai: Make The Most Of Your Money In The City Of Gold ~ Zero Taxes, Zero Restrictions, and Busybody Bureaucrats Be Damned ~ by  W. William Woods - When you think of the Middle East, the first words that come to your mind might not be “business friendly” or “moderate” or “peaceful.” But all those words describe Dubai. Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, a political union that was formed in 1971 when Abu Zaby, Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Shariqah, Dubayy (Dubai), and Umm al Qaywayn merged. They were joined a year later by Ra’s al Khaymah. The UAE is a small nation nestled between Saudi Arabia and Oman, but oil wealth helped put its per capita GDP on par with Western Europe.

Unique Travel
Travels In Nice ~ One Of Europe's Great Cities ~ by Richard Robinson - In the old part of Nice there is a small shop beneath a striped awning called Cave de la Tour. Strictly speaking it is a wine vault but in fact it defies categorization. A tiny stone bar is shoehorned between vats and racks of wine, a place to sample and buy the excellent Vin de Bellet of the region. There are two or three small tables with checkered covers crammed inside, and some chairs and up-ended barrels outside, on a narrow street free from traffic.
Travels In Yemen ~ On The Arabian Peninsula ~ by Dustin Javorsky - For over the past year the country of Yemen has had its foot firmly in the US Government's list of places your average tourist shouldn't visit, the warning states: The Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens to consider carefully the risks of traveling to Yemen. The security threat level remains high due to terrorist activities in Yemen, and Americans are urged to exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security.
Gothic Ghent ~ Travels In Belgium ~ Written & Photographed By Sam Mills - I had never seen a real guillotine before, but here, in the Museum of Torture in the too aptly named Castle of the Counts, was a real, live, working model. And, ghoul that I am, I was fascinated. Circling the beast, I checked out the weight of the heavy, rust-pitted blade, noting how ingeniously it had been cut on a  bias to better perform its grisly work.
Bieszczady Mountains ~ Poland’s Hidden Corner ~ by Bart Nabrdalik - For most western tourists anything in Poland outside of Krakow and Warsaw, with perhaps Danzig and Breslau thrown in for good measure, is still pretty much a terra incognita. Even for the Poles themselves, many areas along their country’s eastern frontier with Ukraine are little known, and therefore pleasantly devoid of the trappings of mass tourism.
Lost In Borneo ~ Deep In The Forest Of Borneo ~ by David Metz - I'm scared crazy and my body is shaking terribly. I had just heard two shotgun blasts fire off in the night. It’s late, as I'm startled awake. I'm camped on the only trail that follows a narrow ridge deep in this remote region of Borneo and I fear Murut hunters are coming my way. With animist beliefs and modern weapons, surely they would fire at any animal or man foreign to them, including myself.
Sunderbans Once Again ~ In Bangladesh ~ by Rajdeep Bhattacharjee - Since I made a trip to the Sunderbans National Park on the Indian side last summer, I decided to see the Bangladesh side of the park this summer. As all trips to Sunderbans National Park in Bangladesh are by group package, it was difficult for me as I a single foreigner to fulfill my wish. I did check various websites and after all the crosschecking found Green Channel Tour Operators, whose itinerary looked interesting.
On The Modern Silk Road ~ Traveling An Ancient Trade Route ~ by Susan Boyoung - Born in South Korea and raised in America, I embody Eastern roots with Western views. Traveling through China fulfilled part of my personal story, for in our heritage lies a discovery that may answer some of our precious questions. With a group of students from The Beijing Center, I traversed part of the 1,423 mile ancient Silk Road exploring the land, people, and places of my root culture.
The Fascinating Coral Reef In Toliara, Madagascar ~ Diving And Traveling In Madagascar ~ by Harinia - One of the most frequently visited provinces in Madagascar is Toliara. From Antananarivo the RN7 will lead you to Toliara. Taking the road, you will reach the province of Fianarantsoa (408 km from Antananarivo) before arriving in Isalo (206 km from Fianarantsoa.) Situated in the southwestern corner of Madagascar, the lsalo range raises its rocky heads.
Travel In Burma ~ Asia's Most Obscure Travel Destination ~ by John Spampinato - A half cup of coffee and an exit form sat on the table before me, and I was loath to finish either. I wanted that coffee to last forever, its contents to magically refill with each sip. And I wanted that form to just disappear. The experiences of the past several weeks had been somewhere between an opium dream and a National Geographic cover story.
Hills, Mountains And Sea ~ The Adventure Side Of Hong Kong ~ by Antonio Graceffo - Trekking up a steep knife-edged ridge, covered in late season grass, the slope gently dropped off on either side. To my right, the green rolling hills were expansive, filling the horizon with a never-ending panorama of undisturbed nature. To my left, an easy bluff eventually gave way to a sharp drop of approximately sixty meters, ending on a sandy beach.
A Small Tragedy In Kuala Lumpur ~ Travels In Malaysia ~ Written And Photographed by David Lavoie - I have been watching a small tragedy unfold here in Kuala Lumpur. The story is hardly unique to this lovely city, but is, unfortunately, common around the world as our demands for living space take up more and more of our natural resources. Compared to the huge misery of a natural disaster like the Tsunami, it is nothing, but it must be terrifying for the little beings involved.
