A
Funny Thing Happened On Our Way To Buying In San Carlos De Bariloche
~ We
Bought Rio Salvaje Lodge In Hornopiren, Chile ~ by Douglas Harris -
I
traveled for many years looking for the ideal location to live. Patagonia,
with the incredible vistas of mountains and lakes, is paradise for me.
San Carlos de Bariloche, the capital of the ‘Lake District’ in Argentine
Patagonia, was the place I had decided to use as headquarters for my specific
search for a home.
Fear
And Loathing In Fortaleza ~ Robin
In Brazil's Northeast ~ by Robin Sparks - Maybe I’m just tired from
having arrived at 2 AM only to be told that my hotel was full. Or maybe
it’s the wind or the high-rise buildings, which appear to have been planted
without any kind of architectural forethought.
Master
Of Survival ~ Chief
Antonio Zarco Of The Choco Indians Of Panama ~ by R.M. Koster - Chief
Antonio Zarco is only an inch or two over five feet tall but very muscular,
with thick deltoids and powerful arms and skin the color and apparent texture
of polished mahogany. He is physically imposing well beyond his size.
Moving
To Chile, Part Two ~ Chile
Measured Up! ~ by Bonnie and Gary Paulsson - Wow-and-a-Half! We have
had the most amazing month! First of all, a big Chilean "Hola!" to all
of our new-found friends. We do not want to forget anyone. We have received
emails from people living all over the world - from the US to Latvia as
well as England, Afghanistan, India and
The
Valley Of Gold? ~ Ford's
Plans To Turbocharge Himalayan Tourism ~ by Qiwi Lin Lisolet - Today
I shook hands with Alfred Ford, great grandson of the legendary Henry Ford.
What's most surprising is that this wasn't in Aspen or St. Moritz, but
in the small Himalayan town of Manali, a town Mr. Ford plans to put on
the world tourism map with the construction of an ambitious new ski resort.
Sensational
Sydney ~ Falling
In Love With Sydney ~ by Dawnelle Salant - Sydney! I really,
really love Sydney. This line, from the slightly tacky commercial advertising
Australia’s biggest city, has an irrefutable ring of truth to it. I, personally,
really, really do love Sydney. Besides having one of the most famous and
spectacular harbors in the world, Sydney truly has a multicultural and
cosmopolitan vibe. |

Return
To John Wayne Island ~ Beautiful
Isla Taborcillo ~ by Matthew Atlee - I received
an email from John Wayne Island saying that they had just finished the
small salt pool that I had seen them working on the first time I visited
the island. I had received some others before this email; most of the emails
were about different projects that were being completed on the island,
or discounts the hotel was offering on upcoming holiday weekends.
A
Look At College Life From A Backwater ~ Teaching
In Mexico ~ by Jurgen Klemann - There wasn’t
much of a doubt for me as to whether or not I should study at university
more than twenty years ago. I was bright enough for it. At that time, these
outfits charged no tuition fees in Germany. However, I was the first member
of my tribe in Germany who went to and graduated from that sort of thing.
Along the way I lost a little hair. The drop out rate at German law schools
makes me almost speechless, and that doesn’t happen very often.
Permaculture
~ Living
Off The Land ~ by Jens Porup -What if you could
be self-sufficient? Grow your own food, spin your own wool, bake your own
bread, brew your own beer. Barter or trade for the few things you couldn't
make yourself. Instead of being a slave to an economic system whose very
existence depends upon you to spend money you don't have on crap you don't
need, why not cut yourself free, and simplify your life to what is truly
essential, to what you actually need?
Able
To Housesit? ~ A
Conversation With An International Property Caretaker ~ by Gary Dunn
- Interested in living rent-free overseas as a housesitter?
Maryanne Lowell is a single woman nearing retirement who recently completed
a housesitting assignment in Australia. She shares her experiences as an
international property caretaker in a conversation with Gary Dunn, Publisher
of The Caretaker Gazette.
Economic
Citizenship ~ Alive
And Well In The Eastern Caribbean ~ by Deb Andrews - So you want to
move to one of the Eastern Caribbean islands and start a new life? There
are many decisions and even more options involved in such a move, and one
of them can be economic citizenship. Why economic citizenship? Economic
citizenship programmes in the region allow foreign nationals a fast track
to full citizenship of a participating country, through a government sponsored
investment programme. For both personal and professional reasons, this
can be a perfect solution for a number of reasons.
Worldwide
Search Leads To A Ranch Argentina ~ Making
The Move To Argentina's Wine Country ~ by Mark McMahon - Stewart Bryant
is packing up the family and moving to a ranch in Argentina. We met on
the street in the charming town of San Luis. Two days later we were seatmates
on a flight from San Luis back to Buenos Aires. I was captivated by the
story of his decision to move his family from Lake Tahoe, Nevada to Argentina.
San Luis is in the Mendoza province of Argentina, known for its’ vineyards
and especially Malbec wine. I conducted this AdventureView over the phone
after we had both returned to the States.
Open
Wounds ~ Looking
At The Recent Past In Spain ~ by Paul Read - The 20th November 2005
marks the 30th anniversary of Franco’s death. One year ago the government
promised to “restore the true history” for those that died defending the
democracy enjoyed by all today. Because for whilst the Nationalists were
honoured as heroes, the Republicans that died fighting fascism lie forgotten
in hidden graves. But the removal, earlier this year, of the last statue
of Franco from the streets of Madrid created an unexpected backlash amongst
Spain’s not-so-dormant Right-wing. Will the Government now continue in
its pledge to “honour the dead” and to “re-write history” or will
it just let old wounds fester?
Paradise
On A Budget ~ How
To Visit Greece And Get The Best From Your Dollar ~ by Janet Darbey
- Greece is a wonderful place to visit. It has everything
from undiscovered remote islands that are akin to paradise, to a huge bustling
city that is full of tiny marble pavements and archaeological sites. The
people are as friendly as you will find anywhere in the world, and even
in the city of Athens the pace of life is laid back and rejuvenating.
More
Than Merengue ~ Keeping
A Christmas Tradition Alive In The Dominican Republic ~ by Ginnie Bedggood
- The whole town of San Pedro de Macoris is jumping, awash with excitement.
This past weekend it was pretty much awash with rum as well. And many of
those celebrating had surnames like Henderson, Wilson, James and Simons.........and
probably from his grave Theophilus Civerton raised his ghostly glass as
well. So......is San Pedro de Macoris the latest fun spot in the Dominican
Republic for escapees from US and UK?
Starting
A New Life In Spain ~ Making
The Move ~ by Elaine Valet - I suppose it was about ten years ago when
we first started thinking about buying a property in Spain – a holiday
home that we would visit for two or three weeks of the year. Over the following
years, at weekends, we would trail numerous property exhibitions
organised by the big estate agencies. But back then, like with many others,
owning a home abroad turned out to be only a dream, as the visits to the
exhibitions were as far as we got and we never took that step further.
Celebrating
American Holidays In Buenos Aires ~ American
In Argentina ~ by Delores Johnson - It is my second holiday season
in Buenos Aires. I moved here 16 months ago. Being from the Northern part
of the Northern Hemisphere (Connecticut, USA), I still have not gotten
used to it being warm at Christmas time. I walk into a grocery store or
department store, and among all of the Christmas decorations, gift items,
and special foods for Christmas, like turrón, a type of candy, and
sweet bread, I see swimming pool and picnic supplies and lawn furniture.
It is a shock to my system.
Lessons
Of The High Caparaó ~ In
Brazil ~ by Shane Jackson - My wife wanted to go visit with
her mother and show off the latest baby. Needed to inspect the apartment,
global warming has bought giant sized hail stones to Belo Horizonte. We
had sustained some damage, golf ball sized hail, heretofore unheard of
in this part of the tropics. It had tore down some awnings on the veranda.
We thought we might have a family reunion at the Parque Nacional Serra
do Cipó but few could make it.
Television
In Latin America ~ Postcards
From Costa Rica ~ by Kevin Barke - The theme
of the lonely Tico is a popular one in Costa Rica media. The last time
I checked, the Teatro Nacional had commissioned an original play called
‘Un Tico A Pesar’, (a Tico to pity) which was produced at the flagship
theatre’s secondary venue in downtown San Jose. The theme was an ordinary
Joe who takes a vacation but gets into trouble because he is so unaccustomed
to having time off he doesn’t know what to do with it.
Praying
For A Cure ~ Faith
In Cambodia ~ by Antonio Graceffo - When word
got out that there was a monk blessed with the ability to heal, desperate
patients came from all over Cambodia. We were still more than a kilometer
away from Wat Serey Soupein, but already, we found ourselves driving through
a crowded village, which hadn't existed just a few weeks earlier. The rainy
season and the unaccustomed press of crowds had churned the dirty streets
into mud, as hundred of people busied themselves with the activities of
daily life, buying and preparing food, caring for loved ones, and praying
for a cure.
Three
Christmases On A Caribbean Island ~ Many
Changes ~ by Scott Boswell - Approaching my third
Christmas season on Isla Margarita, I find I’ve seen and done a lot. There
have been many changes on the island since I first arrived here. Then,
Venezuela was in a state of political turmoil. Prices were down and many
wealthy locals were leaving the country. They were afraid of what might
happen, but no one I talked could tell me exactly what that might be. Just
that they didn’t like the political situation. Since I hated current administration
in the U.S.A. and after looking over the possibilities here, I decided
it was a good time to buy.

Belize: How to Live, Retire, Work or Invest in Belize - Belize
- the laid back Caribbean country of Central America! It's a favorite of
those seeking a calmer lifestyle in close proximity to the wonders of nature.
Like a un-planed 2x4 full of splinters, Belize is sturdy, rugged and full
of sandfleas, but it also has it's share of beautiful islands, adventuresome
spirits and rum soaked nights. It's the place we dreamed about as children.
A place where we could do what we wanted without being called in to wash
up for dinner. It's a place where you need to know how to repair your own
car and replace parts of your plumbing with bailing wire and tape. It's
also a place where big brother isn't looking over your shoulder and you
can set your own building codes or own a flock of chickens. It's a place
where you can spend the day fishing without trying to keep up with the
Jones's. It's also become one of the hottest expatriate destinations in
Latin America. ...it's not for everyone, but it may be for you. If so,

Ukraine
In Brief ~ A
Ground Floor Investment ~ by James Hickman - Walking around
Kiev, you have to keep reminding yourself - 20 years ago this place was
home to hordes of Communist masses training to take the Fulda Gap and standing
in breadlines yearning to breathe free. While echoes of the past are plainly
obvious in some areas of town, these days, the city appears almost gushingly
cosmopolitan in many neighborhoods. The distinction can be remarkable.
Last year Ukraine was thrust into the international spotlight during the
Orange Revolution of presidential opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko.

not the traditional China of pagodas and pavilions, Shanghai conjures up

ladies, and opium dens, it now has a shining future as Asia’s major hub
of economy and trade. Many multinationals whose regional headquarters were
in Hong Kong and Singapore have already relocated here. China’s most cosmopolitan
city, Shanghai is also its richest and largest. Although estimates vary,
general consensus puts the population of its greater municipal area at
around 18 million people. And that’s truly beyond megalopolis.

Tendong
Hill ~ Unfolding
The Himalayan Folklore ~ by Arijit Karmakar - India
is the land of a million Gods and a billion mortals. Here legend is a part
of history and faith is unquestioned, thus I begin my journey in search
of a folktale, where the entire human race was saved from the wrath of
Gods when they took refuge in a mountain. I am heading for Tendong Hill
in Sikkim. Sikkim is tucked in the North Eastern part of India and is surrounded
by Nepal, Tibet (China) and Bhutan. It is overlooked by the mighty Himalayas
and its guardian deity is the third highest mountain in the world - Mt.
Khanchendzonga.
A
Hidden Wonderland ~ Búzios,
Brazil ~ by Elienne M. W. Lawson - One hundred and five miles
east of Rio de Janeiro, there is a small peninsula home to roughly twenty-five
beaches, each with its own particular flavor of paradise. For a thousand
years, these beaches were the home of the Tamoio and Goitacás tribes,
who competed to outdo each other at blissful frolicking in their idyllic
surroundings. They drank the sweet milk of the tucum fruit, which is similar
to a coconut, and flirted with members of the opposite sex while swimming
in the surf. In the sixteenth century, as the European powers cast their
greedy glances on the vast wilderness of Brazil, Búzios remained
relatively untouched by the legitimate forces of military might.
Drive-Cycle-Hiking
Through The Alps ~ Summer
Tour ~ by Jorg Unger - When your days at work
or on weekends are very scheduled, you may either tend to plan your vacation,
too, or spend these days without any detailed arrangements. Last summer,
we preferred the latter method and just took a map of the Alps and marked
some places, valleys and mountains which seemed to be of interest. Then
I joined up the marks and ready was our route through the German-speaking
regions of the Alps. To be independent of any bookings, places, times -
and of course, not to overdraw our vacation budget - we put our mountain
bikes, rucksacks, and some camping equipment into our van and drove to
Füssen at the edge of Allgäu, Bavaria.
Travel
In The Yucatan ~ Exploring
Mayan Ruins ~ by John Spampinato - There’s a
variable roster of ancient sites which occupy an elevated echelon among
those that showcase and define history’s classic aesthetic achievements
- representations of the very apex of what human kind, architecturally
speaking, is capable of: Tikal; Abu Simbel; Machu Picchu; Ankor Wat; Xian
and a host of other mostly recognizable, if hard to spell addresses, each
construed and constructed in long vanished, mostly esoteric eras.
The
Island Of Tortola ~ Art
As A Way Of Life ~ by Claudia Belleau - There
are several ways to arrive in Tortola, B.V.I., and any way you choose allows
you to breathe the fragrant frangipani blossoms, to uncoil the muscle of
your mind in the tropical breeze. You might take a ferry chugging into
Road Harbor from another island, her somber striped stack and loud blasts
vying for attention with the aqua-shuttered flamingo pink houses and red
tin roofs beckoning from Road Town. You might be arriving on your own vessel,
or one chartered from one of the many Caribbean companies found here.
Glimpses
Of Cambodia ~ The
Killing Fields Near Phomn Penh ~ Written And Photographed by David
Lavoie - Some fifteen kilometres from Phomn Penh down several dusty
dirt roads we arrived at Cheung Ek. This was one of the infamous Khmer
Rouge “killing fields” There was one in each of Cambodia’s 18 states. In
them uncounted people died. Chung Ek alone claimed 17,000 including nine
westerners who tried to help Cambodians. There are no words adequate to
describe this visit, one we felt we had to make.
Karachi
Exposed ~ A
One On One With This Truly Vivacious City! ~ by Qurrat-ul-Aine Moorad
- Karachi to me symbolizes the true self - a persona without makeup. Even
though it is a city raging with newer developments, its true splendor is
reminiscent in its culture, the climate, its bazaars, the beaches and even
the fruit and vegetable vendors hooked at every corner of the street. As
I make my way into Karachi’s extravagant Jinnah International Airport,
I hear announcements in my native language; on the signs above me, directions
are also in Urdu, not only English. I see people attired in traditional
clothing.
The
Desperate Faces Of Durban ~ South
Africa's Tourist Mecca Unraveling ~ by Carol L. Bowman - After
14 days of schlepping through Southern Africa, we had crisscrossed South
Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Swaziland. After collecting 17
new stamps in our passports, my husband and I decided that touching our
toes in the Indian Ocean might be the perfect ending. We selected the much
publicized, vibrant, seaside city of Durban, South Africa for our “grand
finale”. Durban is billed as having the most unique, African feel of any
South African city, with a complex interweaving of Zulu, Indian and Dutch
African culture.
Elephanta
~ The
Abode Of Shiva ~ by Manju Dubey - During the early days of Hindu philosophy,
cave temples became the symbol of piety and extreme religious leanings.
Many cave temples were made during this period. At this point in time there
was a mix of followers of different religions such as Hinduism, Jainism
and Buddhism. Religious tolerance and openness is evident by the fact that
devotees of any of these religions carved out the idols of their favorite
deity. So it is not common to find Hindu, Buddhist or Jain cave temples
harmoniously existing together since time immemorial. The journey to the
Elephanta Caves is like a journey back in time, the caves are remarkably
well–preserved.
