Baking
Bread On The Island Of Antigua ~ A
Canadian Story ~ by Susan Noyce - What happens when you mix French
bread, a Home Depot executive and a Canadian architect together on a Caribbean
island? In Antigua, this has turned out to be a winning combination for
Douglas McVicars and partner Dianne White, who've just opened their fifth
link in a chain of bread and pastry shops.
Back
From Being Back In Brazil ~ More
From Brazil ~ by Robin Sparks - My plans for being the blazing road
blogger in Brazil went the way of the four-wheel in which I surfed the
dunes of Ceara. They sunk. I did however, write like a maniac. Even while
bouncing up and over shifting moonscapes through lost-in-time-towns, I
was seen making chicken scratches in notepad after notepad.
A
Family Affair In Chile ~ In
the Beginning ~ by Bonnie and Gary Paulsson - We are sitting in the
living room of our new, custom designed and built home in the Lakes District
of Chile, each of us sipping a glass of one of Chile's finer Cabernets.
Gazing out at the gathering moonlight as night settles upon our small slice
of Paradise, we look at each other and smile. The last light from the sun's
rays, which graced the tops of the Andes just a few short minutes ago has
moved farther east on its path around the earth.
Journeys
Around Afghanistan ~ Undiscovered
Beauty ~ by Brandy Bauer - Sometimes people ask me about what it’s
like to live in Afghanistan, expecting a revelation of sorts as to how
some people are able to forge a life here. And while there’s no surefire
guarantee how you will react to the place, what I have learned is this:
in Afghanistan, what looks outwardly simple often belies a complexity that
only surfaces upon careful consideration. Take the Hindu Kush, for example.
Dead
Men Don't Leave Tips ~ Adventures
X Africa ~ by Brandon Wilson - Reaching Ngorongoro Crater, we slowly
inched our way up to the ridge of its outer shell, then stopped the truck
and got out for a walk. Gazing two thousand feet below to Lake Magadi,
we were amazed to spot a pink, fluttering swath shimmering like miles of
satin wrapped across that sea of turquoise – thousands of flamingos. It’s
also home to one hundred other bird species that are found nowhere else
in the Serengeti. |

Worth
My Weight In Gold ~ The
Final Leg Of Western Australia ~ by Dawnelle Salant - After
making our way down the enchanting but secluded coast of Western Australia
from Exmouth to Kalbarri, I have to admit I was thrilled to arrive at our
next destination, Geraldton, and see a traffic light! With a population
of over 23,000, this was the biggest city we’d seen in Western Australia
so far. As much as I love the isolation and immersion into nature that
the rest of the coast provides, I did feel a certain excitement at seeing
neon lights and a huge grocery store.
In
Search Of The Scottish Colony ~ History
And Adventure In Panama ~ by Matthew Atlee - The
Scottish colony was something I read about long after I had been in Panama
and had lived in the countryside and found a job in the city and had learned
a little about city life. It was funny for me to learn about the Scottish
colony. I didn’t really know what part of Panama the colony had been founded
in; it turned out the colony was located in a place that was almost impossible
to reach by boat, air or land.
Residency
In Australia ~ From
Residents To Citizens ~ by Sarah Jacquet - Our
two year anniversary of living in Australia has been officialised by an
application to become Australian citizens. This is an opportunity open
to permanent residents after living in Australia for two years. What the
change of status means is that as members of the Australian community,
we have the same rights as Australians; we can vote, have a passport, receive
social security payments, work in the public service or serve in the armed
forces if we want to do so
AdventureView:
Marga Fabbri ~ Fill
The Pool And Jump In! ~ by Mark McMahon - Every time I have been to
Buenos Aires I have visited the Recoleta Arts and Crafts Fair at Plaza
Francia near the Famous (and FOR the famous) Recoleta Cemetery. The Fair
is open every weekend and features a huge variety of arts and crafts, plus
some wonderfully eclectic entertainment. I met Marga Fabbri there on my
very first visit. We have been friends ever since, enjoying discussions
on the nature of life, work, and art, while hanging out on the lawn across
from her paintings. This visit she proudly announced that she had finally
quit her day job!
Some
Thoughts From A Cautious Contrarian ~ Early
And Alone, Not Late And Surrounded ~ by Jurgen Klemann - After wrapping
up my classes in summer and before starting my classes in the winter semester,
I could enjoy a break for a couple of weeks. Because it’s increasingly
difficult – almost impossible – to get me out of Colima, I spent these
two weeks primarily at my favourite restaurants in Colima and at home.
Because I’m utterly convinced that “la caja idiota” (Spanish slang for
the box) has been invented to keep the hoi polloi occupied, I don’t
have that sort of thing at home.
Job
Seeking Blues ~ Finding
Work In Taiwan ~ by Daniel Wallace - I was in the park with a friend
one night, and he explained all his blues. "So, I was teaching in Japan,
thinking about flying home, then I get this email from a school in Taiwan.
They say they'll pay me 60,000 a month, a free scooter, a free apartment,
a free hotel when I arrive and I don't have to sign a contract until I've
seen the school. So, I come to Taiwan, and at the airport, the manager
is standing there and she wants me to sign the contract before she can
drive me to the hotel.
American
In Greece ~ Working
In Greece ~ by Niki McElroy - As an American, can I live and work in
Greece? Well, in brief yes if you are of Greek descent, and yes to the
first and no to the second if you are not. This little treatise is not
directed at those who have Greek heritage but rather those wishing to live
in Greece (specifically Crete) without having to work here. Because America
is outside the European Union, Americans can not freely take up a job here.
Surviving
The Culture Clash ~ Some
Unwritten Rules When Living In China ~ Charlotte Turner - If
you are considering going to live and work in China, then I am sure that
you have already begun your research and read as much literature as possible
regarding Chinese customs, culture and lifestyle. I have lived in
China now for over a year, (I taught in Beijing during the academic year
of 2002-2003 and I am currently teaching in Shantou on a six month contract),
and I wish to share some of the many unwritten cultural differences that
I have experienced during this time.
Ireland’s
Cosy Southeast ~Ireland's
Warmest And Driest Spot ~ by Deirdre Nuttall - When people see Ireland’s
rugged, spectacular west coast, they are often so overwhelmed by the sheer
beauty of it all that they sell their homes and move, sure that their life
is going to be filled with rainbows and ocean waves and red-haired beauties
and great Guinness outside thatched pubs.
‘Da
Fences’ Make Good Neighbors ~ Travel
Around The World ~ by Candy Green - I did it. I made it around the
world. And I tangoed in 18 cities in the process: Honolulu, Hollywood,
Santa Fe, San Francisco, Merida, Lexington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore,
London, Cambridge, Paris, Lyon, Barcelona, Florence, Rome, Istanbul, and
Seoul! In many of those cities I danced in several places. I tried to tango
in two other cities - Edinburgh and Beijing - but was unsuccessful. Not
without stories to tell, however..
The
Mysteries Of The Term 'Mañana' In The Dominican Republic ~ A
Rough Guide To Getting Things Done In The Dominican Republic ~ by Ginnie
Bedggood - The sub-header is not medical advice.
Of course you will need your sunscreen in the harsh sun of the Dominican
Republic. But it is a cautionary tale for new and would be residents as
to exactly how long it takes to achieve a fairly simple task. New residents
who come from cultures where provision of goods and services is but a phone
call away are easily identifiable here in the Dominican Republic during
their first few months. They can appear frustrated, short tempered and
wear an incredulous look. Yes, getting even simple things achieved can
take a lot longer than you are used to.
Nova
Scotia, Canada ~ The
Unlikely PT Getaway ~ by Phillip Townsend - As an old friend
of W.G. Hill, the most prolific author on the PT concept, which extols
the merits of personal liberty, privacy and international living, I thought
I’d address some of the advantages Nova Scotia has as haven for PT’s (Perpetual
Travelers).
Being a PT means different things
to different people, but Nova Scotia has a lot to offer PTs across the
board: privacy, cheap real estate, a low cost of living, unspoiled natural
beauty, friendly people and lifestyle opportunities to suit virtually every
taste.
Adventurous
Shopping In Chile ~ More
On Living In Chile ~ by Jon Steele - If you’re on my mailing list,
then you’ve already received this article and this is rehash, but if not
then sit back and get some inside knowledge about shopping……Chilean style.
If you're one of those types of people who likes to walk on the wild side
and off the beaten path when shopping then the "Persa" (pronounced, pare-sah)
in Santiago could just be the adventure you have been looking for.
The
Truth About ESL In Mexico ~ Teaching
English ~ by Doug Bower - What's more disappointing than a person who
makes a promise he can't keep? A person who makes a promise that is a lie.
Many promises to make a "decent living" teaching English in Mexico are
just that - a lie. If you do a phrase search on Google, "teach English
in Mexico," you will get almost 11,000,000 hits. Some of these sites are
filled with tantalizingly appealing phrases like,
Ruminations
On Good ole Canada ~ Postcard
From Costa Rica ~ by Kevin Barker - My apologies to any readers who
waited patiently for my report on Buenos Aires and/or my definitive profile
of renowned realtor and man-about-town in Nicaragua Larry Hustler. All
of that is coming but not right now. Actually in this issue I need to answer
some reader mail that’s been piling up for eons. But first, a personal
update: Late last September it seemed oddly appropriate for me to go sit
in a Toronto hotel room and get all misty watching curling on TV.
Prices
On Margarita Island ~ The
Most Inexpensive Spot In The Caribbean ~ by Scott Boswell - In recent
articles for Escape From America I’ve been telling people that Margarita
Island is probably the cheapest place to vacation or live in all of the
Caribbean. The one possible exception I thought might be the Dominican
Republic. I just received an e-mail from a couple who want to come see
Margarita Island and who are currently living in the D.R. I asked them
why they were thinking of moving, and to my surprise their reply was -
Fortaleza

The North Of Brazil ~ by Alexander Arden - Over 50 countries around
the world were visited to find the perfect site for an eco-friendly community,
which was chosen to be in the state of Ceará, Brazil. We wanted
to provide "State of the Art" health care services including plastic surgery, laser
eye surgery, hair transplants, and cosmetic dentistry and we have succeeded.
Our 5 star medical and dental specialists are in a world class category.
We have expanded from only health services to offer travel services, company

Belize: How to Live, Retire, Work or Invest in Belize - Belize
- the laid back Caribbean country of Central America! It's a favorite of
those seeking a calmer lifestyle in close proximity to the wonders of nature.
Like a un-planed 2x4 full of splinters, Belize is sturdy, rugged and full
of sandfleas, but it also has it's share of beautiful islands, adventuresome
spirits and rum soaked nights. It's the place we dreamed about as children.
A place where we could do what we wanted without being called in to wash
up for dinner. It's a place where you need to know how to repair your own
car and replace parts of your plumbing with bailing wire and tape. It's
also a place where big brother isn't looking over your shoulder and you
can set your own building codes or own a flock of chickens. It's a place
where you can spend the day fishing without trying to keep up with the
Jones's. It's also become one of the hottest expatriate destinations in
Latin America. ...it's not for everyone, but it may be for you. If so,
there's a new eBook that will take you to Belize and help you stay there.

Living ~ Ecuador
Offers Residency Rights In Paradise - On The Cheap ~ by Gary A. Scott
-Ecuador has been in the headlines lately, and none
of it good. Squabbles with the International Monetary Fund…interrupted
oil exports…citizens marching in the streets. A lot of people look at that
and might decide to stay away. I look at it and see a buying opportunity.
And that’s because Ecuador is a slice of paradise. Its short-term troubles
give you a chance to buy real estate there on the cheap. The fact is, every
decade or so, Ecuador goes through the most “civilized” civil unrest you’ll
ever see. People go on strike—but still show up to do their jobs. When/if
the government changes, life goes on. .

Memories
Of Piha New Zealand ~ On
The Wild West Coast Of New Zealand ~ by Stephanie Giordano - Before
every winter's arrival I sense its presence. I feel the bitter chill in
the air, and the familiar scent of snow. At first it’s a welcomed phenomenon.
The idea of bundling up with plush blankets and hot cocoa sounds appealing.
This feeling, however, is short lived for me. After a few snow storms,
when I can't feel my nose and toes, and I'm so bitterly cold that by the
time I get inside I'm sweating from moving so fast, I remember how much
I miss summer. Actually, this year, I'll remember how much I miss Piha.
Piha, on the wild west coast of New Zealand, will become my recurring destination
as an escape from New York winters.
Elephants,
Dragons, Rice Fields, Pagodas, Karaoke, And Edible Puppies ~ Going
It Alone In China’s Guangxi Province ~ by Steenie Harvey - Students
aside, most first-time travelers to China join organized tours. But not
everybody enjoys group travel, set meals, and rigid itineraries. Although
things sometimes go wrong, I much prefer the freedom of making my own discoveries.
Besides, going it alone is always likely to be cheaper than any tour. But
if you don’t speak Chinese is traveling independently feasible in this
country? Is it easy to book internal flights, use public transport, and
find decent hotels at affordable prices?
On
The Camino de Santiago ~ The
Way Of St. James ~ by Richard Frederick - There may come a point in
some people's lives when they decide that they must go on a pilgrimage.
Pilgrimages come in different sorts. Some may be less weighty; they can
lead to Graceland or to Jim Morrison's grave in Paris. Others may be personally
important, perhaps the return of an emigrant to his birthplace after many
years of separation from his homeland. Others can lead to the settlement
of a new country. The dictionary says that a pilgrimage is a journey undertaken
with a specific objective.
A
Trip To Magna Grecia ~ The
Many Faces Of Southern Italy ~ by Marialena Lioulia - Visiting
the southern part of Italy has been a desire of mine for quite some time:
I have visited Italy three times in the past twenty years, but never the
deep south of Italy. Entering Italy from Greece is not much of a problem,
since both air and links can get you across the Adriatic Sea in no time.
This time I embarked on a ferry for Italy from the Greek port of Patras
- my destination was Brintisi, a 14 hour trip
One
Week In The Coastal Paradise Of Western India ~In
Goa ~ by Rajdeep Bhattacharjee - As I was wondering
where to escape to during this time of the year, I received a call from
Catherine, a friend of mine from Kolkata who wanted me to join her on a
trip to Goa. Wow!!! I just jumped out of the chair and said yes immediately.
As we were both camping at different locations, we decided to meet up at
Mumbai Airport. It was on the morning of 24th October, I took the newly
introduced Spice Jet flight from New Delhi and reached Mumbai in the afternoon
and was joined by Catherine who was waiting for me since morning.
Pura
Vida In Costa Rica ~ Enjoying
Manuel Antonio ~ by Cindie Baxter - Often, we gauge the satisfaction
of a much anticipated exotic beach vacation by the number of days spent
basking in the warm tropical sun's rays. To say that being caught in tropical
storm force winds, pounding rain, and loss of both power and water would
be anyone's ideal vacation would be insane, or would it? Before you send
the men in the little white coats, consider this. Pura vida!
The
Magic Of Phuket, Thailand ~ Finding
Thailand ~ by Susan Hart - When I first arrived in Thailand, I did
not expect to fall in love. In fact, just the opposite was true. Driving
into Bangkok for a three-day stopover on the way to Phuket Island, my first
impression was one of shabby buildings, unsophisticated advertising billboards,
and suffocating smog. In the superficial glance I was able to give it,
(and through the lens of my Western cultural viewpoint), Bangkok looked
like a tawdry imitation of what I had left behind.
In
Guatemala ~ On
The Road To Panama ~ by John & Harriet Halkyard - There
had been quite a debate at the language school we had been attending, and
between our host family where we had been living, as to which market was
the more interesting: San Francisco el Alto or Guatemala’s most famous
market, Chichicastenango. We had seen the former and now we would explore
the latter. Actually, in my mind there was no question that we were going
to go to Chichicastenango. It was on my list before we left the US in our
motorhome three weeks earlier. San Francisco el Alto was a bonus.
My
Brazilian Experience ~ And
Brazil's Best Kept Secret ~ by Richard Conti - My name is Richard Conti.
I am originally from New York City. Being raised in the shadows of the
once towering World Trade Center little or nothing surprises me or shocks
me these days. I now live and have lived in Beautiful Boca Raton Florida
on the southeast coast of Florida for about eight years. No other city
has impressed me as much as Boca Raton until I discovered a Most Wonderful
Place in Brazil !!
