Spring
Is In The Air ~ Living
In Tucumán, Argentina ~ by Jaime Russell - It’s September here
in Tucumán, Argentina. Everything is starting to bloom. The lapacho
trees are absolutely gorgeous, and the azaleas are breathtaking too. But
wait, there is like this smokiness not quite letting you appreciate the
full beauty of it all. During a crisp clear day you can easily see the
mountains, but now you can barely make out their silhouette. And if you
decide to look up, WATCH OUT!!! You will probably get some ash in your
eye. What’s the deal you ask? Well simply put, here in Tucumán during
August and September, it “rains” ash.
An
Artic Ascent ~ On
Top Of Sweden’s Highest Mountain ~ by Darren Packman - As I stood trying
to stamp life into my frozen feet in the tiny wooden cabin perched 1,890
metres up Sweden’s highest mountain, I found a tattered copy of the New
Testament lying open on top of a rickety wooden table. I’d never read the
New Testament in Swedish before. Staring out of the frosted window at the
swirling snow clouds engulfing the remaining 200 vertical metres to the
summit of Kebnekaise, I figured this might be a good time to start.
In
Need Of Energy ~ 3
Paths To Personal Power From The South Of Spain ~ by Paul Read - At
first it seemed a romantic alternative; candle lit meals, gas lighting
and early evenings to bed. Living 2 km from the nearest electricity pylon
gave us a novel and factura-free lifestyle. Our friends frowned at our
choice of such a remote farmhouse, but although we had been pampered by
city life, we accepted that campo living was about going back to basics.
Equipped with a portable 12v battery pack we could recharge our mobile
phones and plug in a B&W 2 inch screen TV. What more would we need?
Well, for a start there was the washing machine, the water pump and the
iron. We had to use a generator for these things but the noise and the
fumes destroyed the peace of our valley as well as the lining of my lungs.
But AA batteries alone couldn’t run such power hungry items.
Safe
Haven In The Sun? ~ Is
It Still Safe To Live As An Expatriate In The Dominican Republic? ~
by Ginnie Bedggood - Headlines in the daily newspapers
in the Dominican Republic attest to rising rates of crime, some of a violent
nature, a burgeoning drug culture and some 36% of the population living
below the poverty line (which means on less than US$2 a day). So, is it
still safe to live as an expatriate in the Dominican Republic or is Dominican
society falling apart? Can the American and European retirement population
still find their piece of paradise in the sun, to make their golden years
truly golden, or do they have to surround themselves with high tech security
devices in order to protect themselves against robbery. |

Traveling
And Staying Healthy ~ Working
On Organic Farms In Australia And New Zealand ~ by Stephanie Giordano
- When I first decided to take an extended journey away from home, I knew
I would be faced with the tiresome dilemma of what to do with all my stuff.
I quickly decided that "stuff" was meaningless in the grand scheme of life.
But I didn’t want to give it all up. I wanted to keep my favorite books,
my practically new Swedish foam mattress, and all the things I had collected
since college. I couldn’t afford a storage unit (could barely afford to
survive the 6 months I'd be away). When I thought about it though, six
months is nothing. I mean, I wasn't spending seven years in Tibet.
Escape
To The Other Side Of The Atlantic ~ France,
Spain And Dubai ~ by Rosemary Jaworsky - After my last article for
Escape From America Magazine, LIVING in GASCONY, (May 2005), I was inundated
with requests for information on residency, home buying, working and healthcare,
etc. I tried to answer every email to the best of my knowledge and from
some borrowed knowledge, too. Some of my writers, who were keen to learn
more of the area and were interested in buying, actually paid me a visit.
I still have about 6 more scheduled visits for September and October and
two confirmed visits for April and May next year. Since then, I have continued
to receive requests on secondary home ownership with a view to later retirement.
Western
Australia Part Two ~ Time
Travel And Mermaids ~ by Dawnelle Salant - My adventures in
Western Australia began about halfway up the coast near Exmouth, Coral
Bay and Ningaloo Reef. I had been surprised at the area’s isolation and
small number of people who lived and traveled here. But as we went south
towards Perth, we were confronted with even more of Western Australia’s
remoteness; long distances between towns that decreased in number and in
size, and very few vehicles on the long empty roads.
Sumbawa
~ Another
Kind Of Paradise Part II ~ by Bruce E. Pohlmann - For some reason,
mostly, I guess, due to the distortions of perception common to those who
live in small villages, I had the impression that Sumbawa Besar would be
a wonderland of shops, restaurants, hotels and perhaps even a bookstore.
The reality is that it’s the sleepy little capital city of a large, sleepy
island. After an uneventful night at the Hotel Tambora with only one offer
of a woman (“I’m married.” “It doesn’t matter.” “It does if you know my
wife.”), and a breakfast of toast and bitter coffee, I’m ready to head
back to my little village of Sekongkang.
Brazil
Or Bust ~ Part
III ~ by Andy Neill - To quickly recap previous installments of my
continuing saga, I came to Fortaleza, Brazil in January 2004, following
much research and after a rather tough divorce, determined to discover
another life…a better life! My first stay was a month back in January of
2004. After a couple of months back in North America, I was ready
for chapter two. I came back to Fortaleza in May and, except for August,
have been here since. I pick up the story, as I’m about to leave for Canada
and the US on the 1st of August.
Paris
Meeting Places ~ Enjoying
Paris ~ by Adrian Leeds - Many who make the move to Paris promise themselves
NOT to meet only people of their own nationality. I was one of those who
thought that becoming Parisian meant having Parisian friends, immersing
myself in the French community, speaking French more often than English
and all in all, avoiding the American community. Quickly I discovered this
wasn't necessarily the best approach to acclimate quickly to my new home.
The support I gained from having new found friends who understood the issues
and concerns I faced entering this new culture was invaluable to a successful
transition. French friends weren't able to provide that kind of support.
Interview
With Pedro Sarasqueta ~ Answering
Questions About Investing In Panama ~ by Matthew Atlee - One of the
first persons I met after starting at the magazine was Pedro Sarasqueta.
He’s become an excellent resource for me and many expats on how and why
to invest in Panama. Pedro was the first contact for many of the expats
that now live in the residential development Altos del Maria. He is the
best I’ve seen at getting you, the expat, from A to B to Z in Panama, so
he’s someone you should talk to if you are thinking about moving to Panama
or even just visiting with an idea of staying. A little on his background:
Pedro graduated with a Master’s degree in Geology from Christian Albrecht
Universität in Kiel, Germany; he speaks fluent German and English;
he worked as a customs agent with his father when he returned to Panama
from Germany in 1984
Some
Thoughts On Real Estate And Energy ~ On
Living In Mexico ~ by Jurgen Klemann - It’s no exaggeration to claim
that I’m a truly international citizen. I’m German. But I live in Mexico
after living in the United States, South Africa and New Zealand. My stints
in the United States and South Africa were rather short term oriented.
Since then my stints seem to be rather long term oriented. When you get
a little older and perhaps even more mature, your life stabilizes. There’s
now another hint about that stabilization thing. I’m getting increasingly
interested in real estate. It doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m about to
buy real estate.
Margarita
Island Free Medical Care ~More
From Margarita Island, Venezuela ~ by Scott Boswell - We’re both fortunately
pretty healthy, but a few months back we were roaming around the island
playing ‘tourist’ and KC, my significant other, stepped wrong and hurt
her foot. I took her to a hospital that was close by. It was clean, efficient
and a very nice doctor saw her immediately, examined her foot, ordered
two x-rays and diagnosed a sprain. He also wrote a prescription for arch
supports to help give her more stability in future and told us where to
order them.
Differences
Between China And Taiwan ~ Living
In Taiwan ~ Photo And Story by Daniel Wallace - One very noticeable
difference between China and Taiwan is that Taiwanese women frequently
have fuller bottoms. I’ve only been in the country a month, so my studies
on the issue are hardly authoritative, yet the difference is pronounced.
Fuller – not especially in the width and height dimensions; it’s in the
depth department, in that mysterious and so hard to draw z axis. Is it
a sign of more affluence in Taiwan, that greater comfort and security allows
women’s bottoms to flesh out?

Trouble
In Paradise ~ In
Costa Rica ~ by Kevin Barker - My countrymen
seem to be saying Costa Rica isn't what it used to be. One could extend
that to include all of Central America…well hell, let's just say the whole
world isn't what it used to be either, ok? Ticos are grumbling too. Prices
have pole vaulted over wages to such an extent that the middle class is
in apparent danger of extinction. All I can say is what a pity if that
actually happened. Costa Rica has the best public education, health insurance,
and middle class among all the countries in the Center of the Americas.
The
Caribbean’s Best Kept Secret For Expatriates ~ Dominica
~
by Phillip Townsend - The Caribbean is synonymous
with hedonism - from the mass tourist Mecca of the Bahamas to the off-the-beaten-path
divers' paradise of Bonaire. What you might not know about the Caribbean,
however, is that it's also home to one of the most appealing - and inexpensive
- expatriate and retirement havens in the world. This little-known gem,
though off the well-trodden path taken by most travelers, has a lot to
offer. So if you're longing for the good life in a tropical haven, duck
the crowds and head to Dominica.
Adventures
in Tajikistan – Part 4 ~ Miscellaneous
Diary Entries ~ by Brad Farquhar - One thing you can learn in other
countries is creative ways of mixing different foods. Today, I learned
that you can put corn on a bed of rice, smother it with some kind of white
salad dressing, sprinkle it with parsley, and call it "salad". So when
your travel agent tells you not to eat salads on your trip for fear of
some water-borne disease, take it with a grain of salt (and pepper), at
least in Central Asia. You've got to put your North American pre-conceptions
of various food types behind you. After all, salad doesn’t always mean
salad.
The
Exit Strategy And Disappearing ~ Preparing
To Vanish ~ by Frank M. Ahearn - Exit strategy is very important; recently
a producer from MSNBC contacted me about the disappearance of Patrick McDermott
wanting to know if it was possible if he just disappeared. Anything is
possible; however, just walking away is unlikely. If you are looking to
move on, disappear or simply start over you need a good exit strategy.
For several years, I have been giving advice on how to disappear. I receive
emails from many people with questions ranging from property information
to medical questions. When you break it down disappearing is simply starting
over again, no different then loading that U-haul and having a checklist
at hand.

Belize: How to Live, Retire, Work or Invest in Belize - Belize
- the laid back Caribbean country of Central America! It's a favorite of
those seeking a calmer lifestyle in close proximity to the wonders of nature.
Like a un-planed 2x4 full of splinters, Belize is sturdy, rugged and full
of sandfleas, but it also has it's share of beautiful islands, adventuresome
spirits and rum soaked nights. It's the place we dreamed about as children.
A place where we could do what we wanted without being called in to wash
up for dinner. It's a place where you need to know how to repair your own
car and replace parts of your plumbing with bailing wire and tape. It's
also a place where big brother isn't looking over your shoulder and you
can set your own building codes or own a flock of chickens. It's a place
where you can spend the day fishing without trying to keep up with the
Jones's. It's also become one of the hottest expatriate destinations in
Latin America. ...it's not for everyone, but it may be for you. If so,
there's a new eBook that will take you to Belize and help you stay there.

Where
The Chips Fall ~ Global
Economics and Emerging Markets ~ by James Hickman - This is
how it starts…. They’ve saved for decades, investing in the very securities
that have been the world’s benchmark for stability. Having kept their currency
artificially cheap (until recently) combined with a Stalin-esque approach
to controlling economic and social policy has created an abundance of wealth
that is being wisely invested around the world. As a significant consumer
goods exporter to the United States, an unbalanced trade account refuels
their industrial and financial machine to the tune of billions each year.
China’s growing partnerships across emerging markets, particularly in Latin
America, strengthen their international influence and reputation.

Shocking Consequences Of The Government’s “War on Terrorism” ~ And
Three Great Ways To Fight Back ~ by Mark Nestmann - On
the morning of September 11, 2001, I awoke to a ringing phone. “Quick,
turn on your TV,” my best friend blurted out. “The World Trade Center just
got hit by two jets.” Over the next 30 minutes, along with millions of
other viewers, I witnessed the horrifying spectacle of the World Trade
Center collapsing, with occasional segues to Washington, D.C., where the
Pentagon had been hit by a third jet. In the end, more than 3,000 souls
perished. But what was yet to come was even more frightening. Within a
few weeks of the attacks, the Bush administration put into effect a series
of executive orders, and Congress enacted new legislation, which in hindsight
can be labeled the most significant rollback of constitutional rights in
U.S. history.

By Ferries – Part II ~ Nevis
– Head In The Clouds ~ by Deb Andrews - Nevis
is more than sleepy, its moody! Perhaps its to do with the dominating mountain,
the shapeshifting cloud around the peak, changeless and changing, the light
never the same. Walking up the main street at 8.15 on a Wednesday, through
the banking sector, past First Caribbean (Barclays Bank and CIBC), Scotia
Bank, Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Bank of St. Kitts and
Nevis, and then the ferry dock, the various Ministries of Government and
the Cotton Ginnery; I saw two people, and never more than one car on the
road at a time. Between 8.30 and 9, things did liven up, and people
started to arrive opening up offices and shops.

modern shopping malls, and a small casino. Along Calle Balcarce, you’ll

to techno-tango. ......

The Mists Of Avalon ~ Glastonbury,
England ~ by Katharina Bishop - From 2001 to 2003 I lived in a small
rural village in Somerset, England. You are probably picturing me strolling
around meandering cobbled alleyways and pruning the roses in my cottage
garden now. Bored to death, most likely. But you’d be wrong. Because the
tiny historic market town (population: 8800) that I called home was not
your average rural English idyll. Not by a long shot. Legend tells us that
when King Uther died, England was left without a king. How to find one?
A cunning plan was devised.
A
Trip Within A Journey ~ In
Bolivia ~ by Kyle Hammons - In the last issue of Escape from
America magazine, I shared my adventures on Peru’s famed Inca Trail to
Machu Pichu. A brilliant trail that is certainly among the best in the
world, the Inca Trail’s popularity has become so overwhelming that wait
lists can often hinder independent travel plans and deter from the excitement
of spontaneous travel. So in this issue I want to take a look back at the
two weeks awarded to me when overcrowding on the Inca Trail left me stranded
in Cusco. Though inconvenient at the time, those two weeks allowed me an
opportunity to view some of the most fascinating cultures in one of the
world’s most beautiful lakes
Nicaragua
~ Central
America’s Hidden Treasure ~ by Jason Fortin - Sandinistas.
Communism. Civil War. Words that do not exactly go hand-in-hand with tourism.
Unfortunately, these are all words that many still associate with Nicaragua,
and the main reason tourism hasn’t flourished there. Times are changing,
however, and now there is even speculation that Nicaragua will become the
next Costa Rica. I have recently returned from a vacation in Nicaragua,
and it’s my selfish hope that it never does become Costa Rica North. Although
I have been to Costa Rica twice, and love it for its natural beauty, I
dread running into so many Americans and Europeans (and paying gringo prices)
while trying to explore a foreign land.
Hot,
Cool And Curative ~ The
Greek Spa Town Of Edipsos ~ by Dulcy Blattner - My husband and
I love to soak in mineral spring pools and tubs. We have sought them out
from Calistoga, California to the Dead Sea in Israel. But this was the
first time we were able to stand in the sea, feel the hot thermal water
under our feet, and experience it pouring over our shoulders – all at the
same time. We can't claim to have "discovered" the thermal springs in the
spa town of Edipsos on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Evia,
since the hot curative waters were mentioned in Aristotle's writing!

shared their thoughts with you, tell it like it is! Gentle tropical breezes,
the azure blue Caribbean, exquisite views, fun of all types, friendly and
welcoming people. And, with the current exchange rate, all for pennies
a day! After a most memorable vacation, this is definitely my Paradise
for vacations to come! I figured it out. My week in Isla Margarita cost
me less than a week at Myrtle Beach, SC! How did I do it?

Mobay To Negril ~ One
Town At A Time ~ by John Casey - Before we begin our drive to Negril,
there are a few things I want to point out. The highway we are going to
be traveling is, officially, "A1." This highway actually runs between Kingston
and Negril, the long way around. A few other names for this road are North
Coast Highway which runs along the North Coast, and Highway 2000. It starts
in Ocho Rios and ends in Negril. It is completed from Mobay to Negril but
still several years from completion to Ocho Rios.
Before
Angkor ~ In
Cambodia ~ by Antonio Graceffo - Along the dusty
road, you pass ancient two-wheeled carts, pulled by large cows. Half wild
herds of buffalo make their lazy way through lush dense jungle, driven
by barefoot boys wearing krama. Rice farmers squat in their flooded fields,
their heads protected from the intense Cambodian sun by pointed wide-brimmed
straw hats. Children play, casing pigs and chickens under the houses on
stilts, whose thatched walls are made of woven palm leaves or shredded
bamboo. Many of the front doors are adorned with a plastic bag of red liquid
to ward off the vampires believed to drink the blood of young girls. Women,
wearing traditional dress, their heads wrapped in krama, walk or ride bicycles
along the side of the road.
Nagarhole
~ A
Visit Worth Remembering ~ by Manju Dubey - Our
holiday was nearing and the children were clamoring to go. Collectively
we hit on the idea of visiting the nearest tourist destination with a back
to the nature feel. The kids decided we should visit wildlife sanctuaries.
Out of the 400 odd sanctuaries, National Parks and reserve areas, we decided
to visit the one nearest to our hometown and with an economical cost. So
Nagarhole was it! The journey began at six in the morning, with a slight
mist and our eager heads popping out to see any wild animal by chance.
The tiger is shy of any human contact, but any animal sighting would have
been welcome.
