Q:
Why a dual issue for August & September? What happened to August? A:
The EscapeArtist website has just updated its real estate section - the
result of a 12 month process to update the code, the graphics, and the
user-interface in order to make the section more user friendly, more attractive
and to provide a wider range of dynamic features. The process of
integrating this updated section into the existing section was a daunting
task and at times it caused the temporary shutdown of other sections of
our website. While we believe the net result is a tremendous leap
forward for our real estate section, the update was accompanied by a slight
delay in the sending our our August eMagazine - On the plus side
we will now be able to add in some great features to our website, such
as international house swaps, international vacation rentals and soon an
international marketplace for items other than real estate. Ever
increasing traffic on our website and especially on our real estate section
creates a very heavy load on our servers - our new section can handle the
load and provide a richer format for the purchase and sale of international
real estate. We apologize for the eZine being late this month.
The delay was unavoidable.

A
Spanish Love Affair ~ Living
On Ibiza ~ by Katharina Bishop - In March 2003 I found myself in a
travel agent’s office together with my husband Charles and our seven month
old son Kiran. England had been cold, dark and rainy for the past six months
and we felt that it was time for a family holiday. Two weeks soaking up
the rays on a Mediterranean island seemed like a very good idea. Given
the choice between various last minute packages to Mallorca, Menorca and
Ibiza, we breezily opted for the latter.
Vanuatu
~ Island
Living In The South Pacific ~ by James - Vanuatu is a series of Islands
situated between Australia and Fiji. Flying time from New Zealand and Australia
is less than 3 hours on a late model Boeing 737’s flown and maintained
by expats. Flying time to Fiji or New Caledonia is about 1 hour. We have
standard digital phone and mobile phone service and the internet service
extends to broadband. Your GSM mobile phone should “roam” here.
AdventureView:
Rita Golden Gelman ~ Female
Nomad Crosses The Globe Solo! ~ by Mark McMahon - Rita Gelman led a
glamorous life. A successful career as a children's book author with over
70 titles to her credit, connections in the entertainment industry, invitations
to the best parties in L. A... Then a vacation to the Galapagos Islands
awakened her long-dormant desire to explore the world. She tried to fulfill
her passion by getting a PhD in anthropology, but years later found herself,
"panting to go off somewhere." Finally she took the leap and did it, on
her own.
Go
West ~ Australia’s
Other Coast ~ by Dawnelle Salant - Traveling down the East Coast
of Australia, you’ll undoubtedly meet hordes of other travelers. From teenagers
to backpackers to grandparents, everyone will have stories to share and
advice to give. And it’s worth listening to; most tourists come to Australia
and merely travel down the East Coast. But one wise traveler, who had dared
to go beyond the East Coast, shared a story with me that was ultimately
responsible for what I consider to be the most extraordinary experience
of my life.
New
Zealand ~ The
Final Chapter…For Now ~ by Rick Adams - Packing
up everything you own including that “I just can’t live without this keepsake
from the Clinton Presidential Library” and moving to the other side of
the world is a big deal. For some it’s a very big deal. For others it’s
just another stepping stone in the pathway to life’s adventures. Whatever
the case, trust me; putting the wife, kids, cats, dogs your laptop all
on a plane all at the same time and hoping for a shred of sanity by the
time you settle into your newly adopted country is, well, wishful thinking
at best.

Your Own Winery - Live On A Vineyard, Orchard or Ranch in Argentina
at a Bargain Basement Price - Argentina!
What could be more romantic than owning your own vineyard? The prices
are right, the place is right, check out the facts. Vineyards, Orchards,
Bodegas (Wineries) Ranches, Estancias, Houses and Farms. Why compete with
the outrageous prices in Europe and the USA? Argentina, with its
truly outstanding wines is swiftly becoming a major player in the world
market. Argentina has excellent soil, excellent climate, and has
just moved into fifth place in the world as a producer of quality wines.
Get in on the ground floor in a place where you buy a vineyard or winery
for a price that you can afford. Argentina has vineyards and wineries
for sale and we are Argentina's largest seller of wineries and vineyards.
In addition to our list of fine properties we provide bottling, distribution,
management, and exportation. If you want to own your own money-making
winery, vineyard or farm, then contact us today.

Federated
By Ferries ~ St.
Kitts And Nevis - Part 1 ~ by Deb Andrews - In St. Kitts, some of the
land for sale on the southern side of the island and the arid eastern end
is in private hands, and though difficult to find is available to non-nationals.
The rest of it is government owned and almost impossible to buy in a normal
life time! Governments move in inexplicably slow time dimensions and in
even more mysterious marketing realms. For example, advertising half acre
plots at $40,000 a piece through SKY TV in the UK only.
Karma
And The Coast ~ In
Peru ~ by El Vagabundo - It had been a long, strange trip indeed. In
search of gainful employment I had circumnavigated the globe in six months.
My itinerary read like this: Bogotá to Caracas to L.A. to Hong Kong.
Two months of work, then off to Baghdad, Basra, and Nasiriyah, Iraq. Four
months later: Kuwait, London, New York, Lima, Bogotá and home. Along
the way I was offered more work in Afghanistan, Uruguay, Valladolid.
“Paint
Your Wagon” ~ Transplanted
In The Islands Of Tonga ~ by Robert Bryce - That old musical tells
the story of “moving west,” to the new frontier. Back then it was
California. Horace Greeley’s “go west” advice still stands good, but the
frontier has moved decidedly more west. These days, “Tonga or Bust” is
the new call to freedom. Folks are painting their wagons (that would be
shipping containers today) and heading to the Southern Hemisphere. Tonga
is indeed the new and perhaps last frontier. To find it, you continue going
west from California, and a little south, too. At about where you begin
to go east again, stop there. That will be the South Pacific.
Wedding
In San Martin ~ In
Mexico ~ by Rene Tihista - Oaxaca has long been one of our favorite
Mexican cities. Many of the surrounding villages are home to a variety
of artesanias and are easy day trips from the city. Friends from California
invited us to meet them in the village of San Martin a short distance from
Oaxaca for a celebrated fiesta held every year on February 15 to commemorate
the beginning of Lent. Mark and Penny had attended the pre-Ash Wednesday
event many times and promised us we would enjoy the entertainment, especially
the traditional “Wedding Parade.”
Paraiba
~ In
Northern Brazil ~ by Guy Hamilton - The state of PARAIBA (para-eeee-buh)
in the north of Brasil is little known and rarely visited by foreign tourists
but many Brasilians know it well. This state attracts many Brasilians from
all over the country during holidays (seems like there is a holiday one
day a week here!) and in the summer months. Due to it’s location at 7 degrees
south of the equator, PARAIBA has summer like weather all year round. The
rainy months are June through August, when the dry breezes blow which make
it very comforatable here – 70-85 F.
Temping
In London ~ BUNAC
Program ~ by Johanna Lee - After graduating from the University of
Chicago with a BA in Philosophy during the summer of 2002, I chose a program
that had never been seen at the Registrar’s office, my BUNAC form. Fulbright
yes, but BUNAC? As the Registrar personnel looked in curiosity, I hung
my head in disappointment. BUNAC had been my last “common denominator”
resort to living in a major European city directly after graduation, excluding
the option of au pairing and teaching English; those roads had just been
too trodden and I wanted my own unique experience.
An
Interesting Russian Marriage ~ From
Beginning To End ~ by Paul Bowden - I decided to go off to Eastern
Europe or Russia in search of romance and adventure. The problem was, I
didn’t have the money to be able to afford to live there. I needed a job
that would support me. So I decided to teach English as a foreign language,
for which there was apparently a considerable demand, or so I was told.
I took the Trinity TESOL qualification in April 2000, and in May I was
offered a teaching job in Krasnodar, Russia, not far from the Black Sea.
Some
Thoughts On Foreign Aid ~ Does
Foreign Aid Work ~ by Jurgen Klemann - Since a little more than ten
years, I deserve to be called an evangelical Christian. It’s easy to imagine
what I’m up to on a Sunday morning. During my time in Auckland, I thoroughly
enjoyed listening to some marvelous sermons from both national and international
guest speakers at evangelical churches there.
ESL
In Thailand ~ Dropping
Standards ~ by Dustin Javorsky - The ESL industry that brings
so many expatriates to Bangkok every year with hopes of procuring an honest
job teaching has become quite the dark and shady business, like everything
else in Thai culture the ESL industry is following suit, the standards
are dropping at an obscene rate, employers picking up anyone with a white
face and a pulse and slapping them infront of Thai students who genuinely
believe that this well dressed foreigner has some kind of qualifications
to be there.
Working
In Paradise ~ Hot
Dogs To Charter Boats ~ by Scott Boswell - Since
I’ve been writing for Escape From America I’ve gotten lots of e-mails from
people wanting to “get out of Dodge”...i.e., leave the United States. Many
of them haven’t reached retirement age and have asked if they can get work
here on Margarita Island - often they don’t include any information about
their skills, present employment, trade, no other information, just
“can I get a job there?” Naturally, I couldn’t answer their questions.
RCBS
– Irreverent Charitable Involvement ~ In
Thailand ~ by T.E. Banker - Eight empty large tour buses were arrogantly
parked out there in front of the Pakred Crippled Children’s Home at 06:00AM
on my way to the gym one Thursday last March. What in God’s name
are so many tourists doing out here in these boondocks at such a non-tourist-like
hour, I asked myself? Although I do not consider myself a particularly
nosy person, this certainly warranted a bit more investigation, so I parked
my car down the Soi a bit and strolled on in to the school itself.
Living
And Retiring In Panama ~ The
Haven Of The 21st Century ~ by Phillip Townsend - Home
to Central America's most vibrant and attractive capitals (Panama City),
Panama is slightly larger than the state of Florida. Bordered by the Caribbean
Seas and the Pacific Ocean, it is one of those places that can seduce you
through its sheer natural beauty. The seemingly endless stretches of picturesque
coastline, lush green valleys, near-perfect weather and friendly people
make it one of the most livable places in the world. If you like Florida,
the Caribbean and South America, you'll love Panama.
On
Learning The Awful Chinese Language ~ In
China ~ by Antonio Graceffo - The first night I was on my own in Taichung
City, I went out for some dinner. But, one problem with China is that you
can’t read the street signs. Basically, I never go more than a few blocks
from my house, because I can’t ask for directions. And, even if I could,
I don’t know my address. Coming out of the restaurant, I got a little turned
around. I knew that I was probably not more than a block from the apartment,
but didn’t know where it was, exactly.
Escape
To New Zealand ~ And
Beyond ~ by Susan Rogers - We landed in New Zealand true immigrant
style. When we left for New Zealand, known as the land of the "Long White
Cloud", we allowed our family of five just two bags each. One was for clothes
and one for everything else we wanted to bring to this "new land". We had
no jobs, no relatives, and knew no one. We left everything we had known
in the US including a large house overlooking San Francisco Bay, good paying
jobs, cars, computers, furniture, friends and family. (This decision from
two people with advanced degrees!) For us, moving to the South Pacific
has been the best decision we ever made.

Belize: How to Live, Retire, Work or Invest in Belize - Belize
- the laid back Caribbean country of Central America! It's a favorite of
those seeking a calmer lifestyle in close proximity to the wonders of nature.
Like a un-planed 2x4 full of splinters, Belize is sturdy, rugged and full
of sandfleas, but it also has it's share of beautiful islands, adventuresome
spirits and rum soaked nights. It's the place we dreamed about as children.
A place where we could do what we wanted without being called in to wash
up for dinner. It's a place where you need to know how to repair your own
car and replace parts of your plumbing with bailing wire and tape. It's
also a place where big brother isn't looking over your shoulder and you
can set your own building codes or own a flock of chickens. It's a place
where you can spend the day fishing without trying to keep up with the
Jones's. It's also become one of the hottest expatriate destinations in
Latin America. ...it's not for everyone, but it may be for you. If so,
there's a new eBook that will take you to Belize and help you stay there.

Currency
Cards ~ Like
Having Liquid Gold In Your Wallet ~ by Sean Brodrick - A
Swiss Travel Cash card looks like a credit card, but has no name on it,
just a numerical code. The user also gets a PIN code. The user calls his
or her banker, who loads the card with a maximum 10,000 euros, U.S. dollars
or Swiss francs. It can then be used to withdraw cash all over the world.
Even better, there are no monthly limits of withdrawal, although a limit
per withdrawal may apply. And you can reload the card when you run out
of cash. Now, it’s not free. When you purchase the card and load it for
the first time, you pay a commission of 1%, not unlike an insurance premium
in the event of loss or theft. Charges for each withdrawal are three euros
or three U.S. dollars (depending on the type of currency loaded in the
card) worldwide, though local ATMs may add on their own charges. And when
you reload it, you pay a commission of 1% on the reloading amount.

Shahani, the Sales Manager and developer of Vista Mar showed me around

me, he had had a vision of building a first rate golf course and residential

put together our promesa, a promissory agreement to buy. This reflects
the price, time frame, terms, and conditions of the sale agreed to by both
buyer and seller. Then we gave Lane the standard deposit of 10% of the
sale price. There are several ways that responsible realtors in Mexico
handle this escrow function, but the object is to demonstrate to the seller
that you’re serious about the transaction without actually putting the
money in their hands before closing. In our case, Lane simply showed our
check to the seller and retained it for us.

Discovering
The Inca Trail ~ Hiking
The Andes ~ by Kyle Hammons - The sun was just starting to rise over
the green carpet of rolling hills when my plane touched down. The flight
from Lima had been nearly empty allowing me to scramble down the aisles
in search of better views of the Cusco Andes. It was not until I reached
baggage claim that the sensation of being a tourist truly overwhelmed me.
Surveying the scene around me, there were enough guide services packed
into the tiny airport to accommodate far more than the 500 people allowed
each day on the Inca Trail. Thankfully, the traditional Peruvian band filled
the room with enough noise to drown out the crowds of tour agents and cab
drivers who shouted their deals through revolving doors and windows.
The
Working Geezer's Guide To Nicaragua ~ In
Ometepe ~ by Kevin Barker - I discovered as much
after a week subbing at a friend’s real estate agency in Nicaragua, in
the colonial city of Granada, a favored tourist hangout on the gigantic
Lake Nicaragua and gateway to the country's finest beaches: My proprietor
friend Gerry hung out his shingle on the main square there three years
ago when he began to anticipate, correctly as it turned out, that the region
was primed for a real estate boom.
Dominica
Extreme, Dominica Diving ~ On
The Island Of Dominica ~ by Claudia Belleau - I have come to Coconut
Beach in Dominica, the Nature Island, volcanically spit and shaped in the
Lesser Antilles, to spend Christmas holidays with my spouse Captain Tom.
He arrived here on November 20th, delayed by scores of mudslides that blocked
passage on cliffside roads. The island suffered the only major earthquake
in its history - 6.5 on the Richter scale, the epicenter of the quake was
10 kilometers from the east coast of the island; the quake occurred at
6 a.m. on Sunday, November 21st.

Margarita Revisited ~ Travels

in Escape Artist, I got a landslide by faithful readers EA who inquired
as to what I had found on this beautiful Caribbean island south of Caracas.
As a result, I had a 10 day reunion with a handful of inquiring minds that
couldn’t wait to discover Margarita Island Venezuela. If you don’t want
beautiful beaches, affordable living, wonderful weather, this place is
not for you.
Creatures
And Comforts On Kangaroo Island ~ 4-WD
Tracking of Koalas, Kangaroos, and Cockatoos ~ Story by Carol L. Bowman
Photos by Ernie L. Sowers - The dark, deserted building showed no resemblance
to an airport. Noticing our hesitation, the cab driver reassured us that
this was the Adelaide General Aviation Terminal, the departure venue for
Emu Airways’ 84 weekly flights to Kangaroo Island. Much of our eager anticipation
for this sojourn centered on a magical, ecological adventure to Australia’s
third largest island, 30 minutes by air and 120 km. from the mainland.
Being the dutiful U.S. travelers that we are, we arrived at the terminal
the customary 2 hours prior to departure time.
Sailing
The Philippine Islands ~ The
Pearl Of The Orient ~ by Junfil Olarte - In my
profession in the aviation industry I have had several occasions to travel
to foreign lands. By the year 2003, I was able to have an opportunity to
work and live in Singapore; it is one of the cleanest countries in the
world; and a model of economic stability and public policy. I have written
a number of articles on living in Asia, most have appeared in monthly magazines
or website newsletters. However, none of my previous travels and experiences
come close to my time in the Philippines.
Travel
In Europe ~ Venice
To Corfu ~ by Janet Darbey - We had already driven through most of
Europe on our way back to our home in Corfu, Greece. We were on the last
leg of the journey, with our small car completely full of goods we
had bought during our vacation in England. We had managed to fit in six
weeks of visiting our family and friends, and some two thousand miles of
travelling within the UK, and now we were pleased that we were on the final
part of our long journey home.
Addis
Abeba, Ethiopia ~ A
City Of Great Color ~ by Theresa Petray - If there is one word to describe
Addis Abeba, the capital city of Ethiopia, it is colorful. It is literally
colorful, in the visual sense of the word, but it is colorful in so many
other ways too. Vibrant might be a better word, to cover all the senses.
People walk around the city in bright reds and yellows; women wear everything
on the spectrum from traditional wrap dresses and scarves, to a scarf with
jeans, to only western clothing. Buildings are painted vibrant shades of
purple, pink, and orange. Bright blue taxis - cars, vans, and small trucks
from the communist era of the 1960s and 70s - spew thick black smoke from
their exhausts.
Gateway
Of The Gods ~ Haridwar
~ by Manju Dubey - Kerala is referred to as God’s own country in India,
but I don’t see how we cannot refer to the little state of Uttaranchal
when talking of God's country. It has the majestic Himalayas and the graceful
Ganges flowing across it, as well as abundant flora and fauna. It’s the
abode of nearly all the Hindu Gods and Goddesses. One such place is Haridwar
or the Gateway of the Gods. Legend says that for some reason Lady Ganges
was very mad and in a destructive mood. When she was about to flow in from
the heavens in fa ury and touch the earth such large-scale destruction
was unparalleled.
Awake
From The Dreamtime ~ Facing
The Realities Of Modern-Day Australia ~ by Sharon Miller - When I was
a little girl, the dream of visiting the Land Down Under occupied my mind.
I dreamed of long stretches of white beach, of bush land as far as the
eye could see, of deserts that rivaled the Sahara. I thought about the
friendly faces of blond haired, blue eyed Australians smiling as they greeted
me with the traditional “G’day.” When I finally visited Australia, during
my senior year of college, I found myself entering the land of my dreams.
