On
An Olive Farm In Spain ~ Zen
And The Art Of Gorse Clearance ~ by Paul Read - Lets try and be positive
about this. Gorse can provide a useful sanctuary for some animals and birds,
I’ve seen toads and wasps for example happily co-existing within this hardy
plant. Its presence, one has to admit prevents soil erosion in places that
perhaps few other plants would grow.
Nova
Scotia ~ Cheap
Living And Retirement In Canada's Hidden Paradise ~ by Phillip Townsend
- A beautiful and inexpensive place in North America where oceanfront and
lakeside lots can be had for as little as $10,000 (or a charming 3-bedroom
home on several acres can be yours for under $50,000). Sound like a dream?
It's not. This slice of Heaven does exist. Nestled in the North Atlantic
on Canada's east coast, Nova Scotia is a little-known paradise steeped
in Scottish, Irish and English history. For the potential expatriate or
retiree, Nova Scotia has a lot to offer...inexpensive real estate, a low
cost of living, unspoiled natural environment, friendly people and lifestyle
opportunities to suit virtually every taste.
Living
On The Edge ~ Bolts
From The Blue ~ by Jurgen Klemann - A while ago, the World Bank published
a report on the most dangerous places to live on earth. That report by
the World Bank defines places as dangerous to live when they’re threatened
by natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes and hurricanes. According
to that report, the award of being the most dangerous place on earth to
live goes to Taiwan. Seventy three percent of Taiwan’s population are threatened
by at least three natural disasters. |

Living
In Sweden ~ A
Pint-size Guide To Stockholm ~ by Darren Packman - It’s
not easy finding a Swedish pub in the country’s capital. In fact, there
isn’t one, and believe you me I’ve looked. For the past five years I’ve
lived as an English expat in Sweden working as an export manager for a
British Brewery – a job that has required me to travel around much of the
country and in particular the capital to drink in pubs.
In
The Azores ~ Onwards
To Faial And Pico ~ by Giovanni Giusti - Peter Café Sport is
the heart of Faial: the meeting point of yachters crossing the Atlantic,
where they can swap their yachting stories and show their yachting tans.
While in the harbour there is an obvious hierarchy of size and fanciness
among the yachts, here the retired couple courageously sailing their 18-footer
can schmooze on an equal standing with the spoiled scion on the 3-masted
ship in search of life’s meaning with his boat full of hanger-ons. Around
Peters lies Horta, a miniature city on the miniature island of Faial, Azores,
Portugal.
Panama's
El Camping Resort ~ Chinese
In Latin America And A Third Set Of Locks ~ by Matthew Atlee - The
idea of going to El Camping Resort was actually hatched in Hartsfield
International Airport in Atlanta and not in Panama. My wife and I were
returning to Panama from visiting my family in Pennsylvania. While we were
sitting at the departure lounge we heard a group of tourists talking about
how they were going to Panama for the first time and that they were going
to stay at El Camping Resort. When I heard the name El Camping
Resort I shook my head in disbelief and thought to myself “come again”.
Margarita
Island ~ Cheapest
Vacation Spot In The Caribbean ~ by Scott Boswell - There are actually
three islands - Margarita, Coche, and Cubagua, with Margarita being the
largest and most populous of the three. Isla Coche is sparsely populated
and very popular with sun worshippers because of it’s beaches and beautiful
water. There are a few hotels, B&B’s, and restaurants. Cubagua is almost
totally uninhabited and is perfect for exploring, snorkeling and diving.
Crikey!
Crocs And Devils And Platypuses ~ Oh
My! ~ by Dawnelle Salant - After spending over a month lazing on beaches,
swimming in the sea and interacting with Australia’s wildlife, I was actually
ready for a city break by the time we arrived in Brisbane. The capital
of Queensland, Brisbane is a delightful city – big enough to have all the
comforts of city living, but small enough not to smother you. Part of Brisbane’s
charm is definitely its multitude of riverside parks. Brisbane River winds
its way through the city, so be sure to spend an afternoon strolling through
the Botanic Gardens that run alongside the water.
Life
In The Dominican Republic ~ Six
Months Down ~ by Elizabeth Roebling - It’s the end of my six-month’s
trial. I have already postponed my return trip to the States once but I
leave in two weeks, to tie up loose ends, see friends and family, and shop.
I am delighted with my reluctance to leave. Although I told everyone that
I was definitely moving here, to the Dominican Republic, I reserved in
my mind the right to fail. I had left home before, like an eight-year old
with my belongings wrapped in a kerchief on a stick, only to return for
dinner, or rather within a year. But I know that this time, I have succeeded.
I have made a life for myself here.
Buddha's
Birthday In Seoul ~ White
Elephants And Lotus Flowers ~ by Brandon Walcutt - I stood quietly
in the riot of color and noise, bathed in the warm light of thousands of
colorful lanterns bearing images of Buddha, dragons, white elephants and
lotus flowers. Before me marched robe-clad groups of monks and nuns and
throngs of people dressed in brightly colored hanboke, Korea's traditional
dress. Other people on the street wore plain street cloths presenting a
modern contrast to the otherwise, almost medieval atmosphere. Blanketing
the street came the sounds of droning Buddhist chants and Korean folk music.
The
Top Things To Remember ~ New
Zealand ~ by Rick Adams - Sandy and I have officially been American
“ex-patriots” now for one year. The June 1 anniversary came and went
without much fanfare, not even a hearty personal congratulations from Prime
Minister Helen Clarke! On the other hand, George Bush didn’t see
us off at LAX when we left either, so its kind of makes things even I guess.
It so happened that on June 1 I had an appointment to sit down for a 90
minute interview with Statistics New Zealand.
Notes
From Costa Rica ~ Shark
~ by Allan Weisbecker - he morning of my sixth day at Anuncio’s little
village, I was about to commence my paddle out to the point when I noticed
a four-foot-long sicle-shaped fin flowing seaward in the backwash by my
feet. I recognized it as once as the disembodied tail fin of a fair-sized
thresher shark, no doubt caught by one of the panga crews, the tail discarded
after the butchering of the animal at water’s edge. I looked around for
someone to ask about the prevalence of inshore sharks in the area, but
both dories had already gone to sea and Anuncio was nowhere to be seen.
He’d probably gone off on one of his extended beachcombing forays.
Gratifying
The Wanderlust ~ The
Best Rewards Of Escaping ~ by Sandy Caputo - Ex-pats often give newcomers
among them an appraising eye as they ask about “their story” – this, an
invitation to describe what it was that caused them to abandon home and
hearth for distant parts. The answers, of course, depend a great deal on
the locale of the conversation. If it’s a tropical beach where catching
rays by day and dancing away the nights are the primary attractions, you’ll
hear one thing. If it’s a mini-version of what was left behind, but doable
at a greatly reduced cost of living, you’ll hear another.
Finding
Fortaleza, Brazil ~ The
Best City In Brazil ~ by Alexander Arden - I had traveled to more than
50 countries all over the world, but had never traveled to Brazil, as it
was never on the way to another destination, and I heard Rio was dangerous.
But I finally found myself going through a divorce and traveled down here
with a friend of mine. I bought a ticket in advance that let me visit 5
different cities. Sao Paulo is just a very big place like New York City.
The waterfalls at Foz de Irauzu are magnificent, much more beautiful
than Niagra, and while there I bought a new watch, laptop and digital camera
at the duty free shopping center on the border with Argentina.
Lifeboat
~ A
Story From Phuket, Thailand ~ by Steve Rosse - In his pre-Phuket life
Murray was a Wall street investment banker, with a designer label wife,
an athletic sixteen-year-old son in prep school and an anorexic fourteen-year-old
daughter in therapy. He was good at his job; the Reagan years were good
to him, and by his fortieth birthday he was quite wealthy. On that day
he drove his wife up to Newport to show her a birthday present he'd bought
himself. It was a 51 foot Jeanneau yacht named Fixed Interest, and
Murray said he was ready to retire and show his wife the world.
Living
In Mexico ~ Rincon
de Guayabitos ~ by Rene Tihista - We live in Rincon de Guayabitos,
about sixty kilometers north of Puerto Vallarta. The third year we wintered
in Guayabitos, before we bought our duplex, my wife Mary mangled the bumper
of our Volkswagen Westfalia camper on the iron driveway gate at the house
we were renting. There is no shortage of skilled mechanics and body
men in La Penita, the neighboring town or Las Varas, eight miles away.
But I was hoping to locate a junkyard where I might find a reasonably intact
bumper, possibly off the wrecked hulk of a VW Van or camper of similar
vintage to ours.
Adventures
In Tajikistan ~ Istanbul
to Dushanbe ~ by Brad Farquhar - This past winter, I had the incredible
opportunity to spend 3 ½ months in the Republic of Tajikistan. Even
I, one of the most geographically literate people I know, wasn’t even really
sure where Tajikistan was located. The following is my “live” blog entry,
completed on my Blackberry at various points on my trip. This version is
edited somewhat for clarity.

Investing
In Africa Can Be Quite A Challenge ~ But
Good Deals Are On The Horizon ~ by James Joroge - Kenya lies in the
Eastern part of the African continent with an area of 582,646 square kilometers
(slightly smaller than the size of Texas). The country is nearly shield-shaped,
its northern part is broader while the southern part tapers out to a tip.
The equator runs midway, almost dividing the country in two equal halves.
Its neighbors in the region are.
EU
Tax Collectors May Demand 10 Years Of Account Records ~ Taxes
In Europe ~ by Mark Nestmann - Beginning July 1, 2005, the “European
Savings Tax Directive” will come into effect. It calls for EU member states
to pass details of interest payments to EU nationals to their respective
tax authorities. In order to preserve their bank secrecy rules, Austria,
Belgium and Luxembourg “opted out” of the information exchange, and will
instead impose a withholding tax on interest payments to EU nationals.
In addition, the 10 newest EU members—Cyprus, Malta, Poland, etc.—will
not be subject to these requirements until 2007.

Brisbane’s
Building Madness ~ In
The North Of Australia ~ by Sarah Jacquet - Being Australia’s booming
city means building madness for Brisbane. Land releases, whole new villages
planned and built, original size blocks of land halved and existing properties
increasing in value. Buying property is still possible here and the good
news is that for the first time in 9 years, Australia has recorded it’s
lowest annual increase in property prices. Land prices have even decreased
in some places to 50% of the price they were two years ago.

Amazing
St. Vincent ~ Windward
Island Of The West Indies ~ by John Easley - Whenever you hear a group
of divers discussing their favorite Caribbean dive destinations, often
with great conviction, you typically hear Grand Cayman, Cozumel, The Bahamas,
and the Florida Keys. Rarely do you ever hear destinations such as St.
Vincent and the Grenadines in the Windward Islands of the West Indies.
I came to St. Vincent to find out why.
New
Zealand’s Coromandel ~ Note
From Travels In New Zealand ~ Written And Photographed by David Lavoie
- The Coromandel is New Zealand’s playground. A region of rugged
forests, dramatic scenery and beautiful beaches, it is home to a myriad
of activities for both New Zealanders and visitors alike, especially those
who enjoy being physically active. Consider this; within a relatively small
area you can go swimming, surfing, fishing, yachting,
Adventures
In Peru ~ Peru's
Manu Biosphere Reserve ~ by Kyle Hammons - Situated in the remote southwestern
region of the Amazon Basin and said to have the highest biological diversity
of any rainforest in the world is Peru’s Manu Biosphere Reserve. Manu covers
a total of 4.5 million acres of pristine rainforest from the crystalline
cloud-forest streams to the sluggish, chocolate-brown rivers of the dense
lowland jungle. Manu’s environment has been unchanged for thousands of
years, thus allowing more species of plants and animals to evolve here
than in any other similar area of the world.
Trieste,
Italy ~ A
Friendly City Off The Beaten Track ~ by Dulcy Blattner - I'd been thinking
about a visit to Trieste for years, ever since my father shoved a folder
of papers in my hand saying, "I guess you should have this now." The folder
contained the location of a grave in Trieste's cemetery, along with decades
of correspondence between my grandfather and the cemetery's caretakers.
The grave was that of my father's sister – my aunt – who died before reaching
her first birthday.
The
River Loire Up Close And Personal ~ Horse
Carriage Ride Along River Loire ~ by S.A. Costigan - The pair of horses
clopped forward, jerking the open carriage into motion while the six American
passengers grabbed for the bags, cameras, and jackets that had slipped
from our laps. “I apologize for my poor English,” our driver Celine murmured
over her shoulder, her voice just a shade above a whisper, “but I will
do my best to answer questions. I will have to speak low because the horses
are voice directed. They get confused.”
Mataking
Island ~ Diving
With Danielle ~ by David Lavoie And Photographs by Danielle Horsnell
- She glides through the water like a sleek fish, her eyes constantly scanning
for life so miniscule I can barely see it. Danielle is not only an excellent
diver, but also a very good underwater (UW) photographer, hence her search
for subjects. By her example, she has been teaching me a different sort
of scuba than I have been used to pursuing. It’s called macro-diving, looking
for the sea’s smallest and most fascinating inhabitants rather than moving
more quickly and hoping for sharks and manta rays.
Jindrichuv
Hradec, Czech Republic ~ Number
Two vs. Number Three ~ by Matthew Gregory - Don’t be blinded by the
hype. Yes, it’s true. Cesky Krumlov is one of, if not the most, beautiful
places in the Czech Republic. Never heard of it? Ask any Czech person to
tell you about Cesky Krumlov and their face will light up like a child
on Christmas morning. They’re certainly not wrong as Cesky Krumlov has
the second-biggest castle in the Czech Republic (behind Prague’s of course),
a spectacular garden to go with it, and unique architecture throughout
the town on top of that.
Traveling
To North Western Greece ~ Discovering
The Land Of Macedonia ~ by Marialena Lioulia - Since
I’ve been living in the capital of Greece, Athens, for most of my life
up until now, the chance of traveling to other parts of my country always
seems like a good idea whenever I have the opportunity. The opportunity
this time was the Greek Orthodox Easter Holiday at the end of April 2005:
I wanted a first class getaway to the countryside.
Up-Country
Adventures In Isaan ~ The
Thailand Most Tourists Never Discover ~ by Steenie Harvey - The young
Isaan driver and his brother aren’t Thailand’s most adept guides. Although
it’s only 50 miles from their home in Udon Thani, they take a wrong turn
on the road to Phu Phrabat’s geological wonderland. But there’s no rush—Phu
Phrabat’s cave paintings and bizarre rock formations have been around since
prehistoric times.
