Life
In Mexico - Moving
To A New Sense ~ by Jan Morgan - For two years now, my husband, Fred,
and I, have lived in Mexico. It has been such an interesting time…I can’t
remember any other short span in my life which offered such diversity,
wonder, and sense of peace as these last years have.
Finding
Love In Sweden - Tales
From Sweden ~ by Darren Packman - “As I sat at 35,000 feet hurtling
at great speed towards the north of Sweden I stared down at the raw lump
of herring and wondered whether I was really supposed to eat it or call
the stewardess and ask her to put a parachute on it and throw it back into
the sea.
AdventureView:
Jim Malusa - Adventures
Of The Ultimate Under-Achiever ~ by Mark McMahon - The lofty goal of
some mountain climbers it to ascend the highest peak on every continent.
Not my high school classmate and friend, Jim Malusa — he had opposite aspirations!
He rode his bike to the lowest point on each continent.
In
The Steps Of African Explorers - The
Quest For Kilimanjaro ~ by Brandon Wilson - In the distance, on Mt.
Kilimanjaro's face, we detect a small, winding chute rising straight up
the mountainside. But examining it more closely, we detect minute switchbacks
crisscrossing the giant snow-topped mound.
Living
In Gascony! - Magical
France ~ by Rosemary Jaworsky - For some of you, Gascony is the
tale of dÁrtagnan and the 3 musketeers, but for those of us privileged
to have found this beautiful and as yet, truly unspoilt part of SW France,
it is paradise..
The
Kingdom Of Tonga - A
Paradox In Paradise ~ by Robert Bryce - Tonga is a wonderful mix of
culture and humor. Humor prevails in Tonga. Like a theme park, Tonga has
all the characters. Living here is challenging, elusive and most interesting.
Orderly chaos might describe its internal functions. Like a beehive, the
closer in you get the more confusion and disorder you see, but somehow
critters that aren’t meant to fly do and things get done, problems get
solved or just go away - this is Tonga. If the plane does not fly today,
it may tomorrow and that gives you another day to enjoy your stay.
A
Day In The Life - Thoughts
From New Zealand ~ by Rick Adams - For the past couple of weeks I’ve
been pondering what to write about for this month’s issue. I don’t have
writer’s block but I did feel like I had covered all of the important issues
and answered most of the important, and not so important, questions people
have thoughtfully asked about moving to New Zealand in previous articles.
Turtle
Hatchlings - Wet,
Sloppy Seal Kisses and Feeding Dolphins ~ by Dawnelle Salant - On Australia’s
East Coast, just about every month of the year is part of a season bursting
with special wildlife activity. Some of these seasons, such as the presence
of stingers in the north, are not always welcome. But one of the most interesting
and exceptional seasons takes place from November to March. Fifteen kilometers
northeast of Bundaberg, Queensland at Mon Repos, marine turtles drag themselves
onto the beach to lay their eggs, and starting in January, tiny hatchlings
emerge from the sand.
Getting
Out Of Dodge ~ Fulfillment,
Adventure, And The Cash ~ by Bruce E. Pohlmann - When I left San Francisco
in 1989, I never imagined that I would still be living overseas 16 years
later. As the Grateful Dead say, it's been a long, strange trip. I’ve lived
in the jungles of New Guinea, the tourist mecca of Bali, the lively city
of Lahore, Pakistan during the days of the war in Afghanistan, and the
seaside village of Sekongkang on the remote Indonesian island of Sumbawa.
In 1989, my eldest son was just graduating from high school; he’s a lawyer
now with a wife. My eldest daughter who was my first child born overseas
is about to turn 14 and is on the verge of becoming a young woman, and
the baby of the family will start Grade 1 in a few months.
Japanese
Citizenship - On
Your Own ~ by Ahmad Tijani - I've lived in Japan for about seven years
which is considered a long time by Japanese people and non-Japanese alike.
It is considered a long time because most people don't come here to stay
but rather to experience living in "First World" Asia and to earn a bit
of money. I had always wanted to live outside the States and had long thought
about the possibility of permanently living outside the United States.
I wasn't sure where to look but in middle school and high school most of
my best friends were from Asia as minorities tended to stick together in
my school.
New
Zealand - The
New Silicon Valley Suburb ~ by Ruth Carlson - If any place knows the
next best thing, it must be Silicon Valley, home of the computer and Internet
revolution. So when I kept hearing about South Bay residents moving to
New Zealand I had to investigate. The buzz started with my neighbor Kristi
Ford, a marketing executive who said she was giving up her career to become
a yoga instructor in New Zealand. Shortly afterwards I heard that Bardon,
a winery owner, had purchased a place in Christchurch to live in half the
year. Then I toured a house on the market, because, you guessed it, the
couple was moving to New Zealand.
Beaches
Of Margarita Island - Venezulean
Beauty ~ by Scott Boswell - The huge birdcage at the entrance - 8 feet
high and large enough to hold about six standing people and looks like
a medieval torture chamber. One sassy parrot greets visitors in several
languages, his less gregarious cage-mates just do the parrot thing. That’s
the first thing you notice at Jak’s, a rustic restaurant down by the marina
at Playa Concorde. It’s in an adobe colored building just at the water’s
edge, about 20’x35’ with a shed-type patio alongside, 100 yards from the
marina and near the dinghy dock the cruisers use to get to and from their
boats anchored out in the bay.
Traditions
Alive In Modern Eastern Tibet - Celebrating
The Tibetan New Year ~ by Satina Anziano - Preparations are in
full swing for lhosar, the Tibetan New Year. The teens will gather at 9
a.m. today to practice the dances and songs for the festival. When
I rouse myself to look at my watch, I see it is already quarter past eight.
My host, Urgyen, is at puja1 with the monks, so I will be alone for breakfast.
I ease myself out of the warm bed into the frigid air. My mountaineer watch
records a room temp of 43°F. I use the chamber pot one last time. I
fish under the blankets for my socks, then jump into the rest of
my clothes layered over the ever-present long johns. Once again under the
blankets for the hot water bottle.
Alto
Quiel ~ Boquete
And Isla Grande ~ by Matthew Atlee - I don’t recommend you driving
straight through from Panama City to Boquete; the drive is very difficult
and tiring and takes six-hours to complete. Fly and then rent a car. The
drive to Boquete takes you right down the spine of Panama through the most
important provincial towns in the county. One such town is Aguadulce. Aguadulce
is a small town famous for its sugarcane plantations, hot summers and summer
fairs; if you visit the town you might want to visit the saltwater tide
pools nearby. They are located nine miles from Aguadulce after the salt
flats, the place is called Las Piscinas. I’ve never been, but hope to go
soon.
Three
Steps To Disappearing - Advice
From A Skip Tracer ~ by Frank M. Ahearn - Being a leading skip tracer
who is hired to find people, I have also helped individuals disappear.
I have dealt with corporate whistle blowers, wives stalked by ex-husband’s
and others just looking for a new start. I receive
emails from individuals who seek new identities. Questions range from,
how to get a new passport, a birth certificate and a driver’s license.
I express repeatedly new identities do not work. If you have ever been
finger printed or perhaps left some hint of DNA behind you cannot escape
it.
Some
Thoughts On Financial Stuff - Art,
Silver And The IMF ~ by Jurgen Klemann - The week leading to Easter,
Holy Week (in Spanish semana santa) boils down to a week of vacation/holiday
in Mexico. All schools, colleges, universities are closed. I can’t claim
to be awfully unhappy about it. Similar to Christmas, which I spent with
friends of mine in Colima, I had no intention whatsoever of leaving Colima
for semana santa. First, because I no longer yearn to keep moving around
like a wandering circus. It rather looks as if yours truly has entered
a calmer and quieter stage in life.
Ex
Pats In China - Some
Thoughts On Stereotyping ~ by Daniel Wallace - I opened the door of
a cafe's toilet the other day, and a middle aged Chinese woman was inside,
about to unbutton her jeans and crouch down. I blinked and politely closed
the door. One of my Israeli friends was in the cafe, so I went and sat
with her and recounted how the woman hadn't locked the door. My friend
replied casually, "Oh, they always do that".
The
Native Speaking English Teacher ~ Teaching
In Taiwan ~ by Ieuan Dolby - Expatriate English teachers come to Taiwan
to teach for a whole host of reasons and are of varying ages. There are
many South Africans, Brits, Americans and Australians, New Zealanders and
Canadians. Many South Africans currently view teaching in Taiwan as a means
to making money as their position back home is not stable. Many Brits and
others view Taiwan as a stop gap between university and starting a career
back home.

a move to the country is not without it’s attendant difficulties. This
Report aims to help the reader to achieve a smooth transition to a new

A Business In Spain - Buying
A Bar ~ by Samantha Hornick - Ever wondered about buying a bar in Spain?
Last year alone, a record number of ex-pats left their home towns for a
new life abroad, and 75,000 of them bought properties in Spain, a figure
which is expected to rise to 100,000 in 2005. There is little mystery as
to why Spain has become such a popular destination for those seeking a
new life. For many Spain is the perfect choice with year round sunshine
and a better quality of life overall. But the biggest dilemma facing most
potential émigrés is finding work abroad and the one dream
most of them share is to own and run a bar in the sun. Buying your own
bar is the most appealing and low cost option for those wishing to move
abroad and ´do their own thing´.

Your Sights On Asia’s Sleeping Elephant - India
~ by Sean Brodrick - Many people think China is THE growth story in Asia.
And sure, China has a lot going for it. But don’t look now, because the
high-flying dragon might be overtaken by a “sleepy” elephant - India. Subscribers
to TSI’s VIP trading service Renegade Investor already know the good news
on India - they’ve received a recommendation on an Indian stock traded
on the NYSE with great potential. In this issue, we’ll look at another
Indian stock that’s on the launch pad. It’s a leading automaker in what
will soon be the world’s most populous nation... it’s exporting to 70 countries
and adding more customers... it grew sales by 29% and earnings by 50% in
the most recent quarter... and yet it’s selling for relative peanuts.

On Off-shore Investing ~ Part
1 ~ by James Hickman - The Escape Artist reader is a different
breed; we resonate a culture of those who have the courage and vision to
be different and follow our instincts to the other side of the world.
As a contributor to EA, I love the diversity of the magazine’s articles
topics. But with the tremendous response and questions I’ve received
regarding some recent articles I wrote on foreign real estate, I thought
it was time to submit an offshore investment primer. Have you ever watched
the so-called investment experts on CNBC? They remind me of TV sports analysts
who seem to think they always know who’s going to win and never admit when
they were wrong.

In Buenos Aires ~ Live
Like A Local ~ by Sandra Kennedy - Why pay for
a hotel when you can easily rent an apartment for less? The prices of the
apartments range from $25 to $145+ U.S. dollars per day. Hundreds of short
and long-term apartments are available with options such as studios, lofts,
and several bedrooms to palatial residences. You can save money while living
in a fully furnished apartment and live in your own neighborhood. My recent
experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina was in a pre-arranged apartment.
This convinced me that you might want to know about this idea whether you
are a tourist or you are scouting the city to relocate.
Rent,

In Paris ~ by Adrian Leeds - In Paris, it's not unusual for a tenant
to quickly transform into a landlord. Such is the case for thousands
of foreigners, particularly entrepreneurial investment-seeking North Americans
who have fallen in love with the City of Light and "La France Profonde"
after a few trips and a short stay in a "pied-à-terre"(furnished
apartment). The first time you landed at Charles
de Gaulle, it's likely you taxied to a quaint little hotel on the Left
Bank, spent the week visiting museums, shopping at the "grands magasins,"
dining at the most written-about restaurants and getting to know the lay
of the River Seine.

from the former Yugoslavia for generations. Now the secret is out

Castle
Hopping In Korea - The
Beauty Of Korea ~ by Brandon Walcutt - Standing atop the fortified
castle wall, I look down at the mist shrouded shapes of pine trees crowding
the mountain slopes. I can easily imagine troops of armored soldiers marching
their way up the steep trails towards the high stone walls. This
is not an image of Europe that we are describing, but one of South Korea.
Korea is more than just the home of kimchi, the DMZ and red-shirted soccer
enthusiasts. Korea has a rich, five thousand year history that is still
easily accessible to travelers. One of the favorite things many visitors
enjoy experiencing are the castles that dot the Korean countryside.

Hooks, 2 Beautiful Gardens, And A Twisted Birch Tree ~ by Matthew Gregory
- For many of us, it was another disappointing year of the Academy Awards.
Again, the Academy managed to give the worst film-nominated the top honors,
at least as far as I’m concerned. The upside to this is that, after I’m
finished grumbling, I try to prove to myself, among others, that the Academy
Awards still have credibility. One way I do this is to dig through the
past winners until I find one deserving of the top prize. I would argue
that one such motion picture is Milos Forman’s Amadeus which won best picture
at the Awards in 1984. One of the greatest things about this movie is the
sets and background, which were filmed in Czechoslovakia.

With Six Kids? On A Budget? Were We Mad? - US$1
equals 0.75 euro ~ by Magdalen McInnes - Monsieur
Meslin, the owner, sent through stacks of pictures—the kids were thrilled
to discover there was a tree-house in the garden and that the neighboring
village (Longjumeaux) had an outdoor swimming pool. House rental for nine
days cost $1,344—including a $310 security deposit to cover any breakages.
(Thankfully we got our deposit back!) Renting direct from the owner cuts
out the middleman—and in my view saved us at least $2,400 (if we had booked
our flights through a travel agency, the cost would have been around $5,000).

English In Brazil - The Michigan School ~ by Rita Shannon Koeser -
Everybody knows Susi. And they all want to study with her at Michigan School.
Some have already studied with her. Here in the small town of Capivari,
also known as “Land of Poets”, everybody wants to learn English.
Senhor Cabral, whose wife owns the gift shop, Loja da Leninha on
the corner, two blocks off the square, says he was in Susi’s first
adult class. In the Livraria e Papelaria shop, a bookshop and stationery
store across from the square, everyone stops to listen when my Brazilian
friend and I start speaking English.

made me really excited from inside. Arguably, the most modern city in India,
Mumbai is the commercial & financial capital city of India.

Singapore Taxi Driver - Fast,
Easy And Efficient In Singapore ~ by Ieuan Dolby - Fast, easy and efficient
could describe life in Singapore. You don’t stroll along the streets in
a world of your own with time to spare and you definitely do not walk when
a taxi is waiting nearby. Life in Singapore is geared towards the making
of money and any spare moment given is put to that task. So if one should
need to get to work or get to the office, go shopping or attend the cinema
(because the children insist on it) then transport is essential.
