Travels
Down Under ~ The
East Coast Of Australia ~ by Dawnelle Salant - I have no idea why I
waited so long to travel to Australia. I guess the fact that it is far,
far away had something to do with it, but let me tell you - the long journey
is well worth it. Australia is a huge and extremely diverse country with
plenty to keep the avid traveler happy. I'm here on a one year working
visa, and I'm already worried that one year won't be long enough.
The
Camino de Santiago ~ In
The Steps Of Popes, Princes And Kings ~ by Brandon Wilson - Although
they say that it’s the journey that matters and not the destination, I,
too, had my doubts. That was until I heard about Spain's Camino de Santiago.
And what a difference that trip has made. If the idea of exploring Europe
is met by a "been there, done that" response, think again. There’s a unique
option whose concept started long before the advent of those whirlwind
package tours. You can walk all or part of the Camino de Santiago across
northern Spain for an intimate, at-your-own-pace exploration of a country
steeped in magnificent beauty, art, history and faith.
An
Interview With Jim Rogers ~ The
Indiana Jones Of Finance ~ by Mark McMahon - If you're a fan of "Wayne's
World" from "Saturday Night Live," you'll certainly remember Wayne and
Garth bowing down before Rock God Alice Cooper repeating: "We're not worthy!
We're not worthy!" That's how I felt in the presence of Adventure God,
twice-'round-the-world author, Jim Rogers. His first trip in 1990 was on
a motorcycle.
Romania:
Europe's Final Frontier And Next Hot Spot ~ Opportunities
In Romania ~ by Kevin Stillmock And Jay Schechter - Check your preconceived
notions about Romania at the door. Your experience here will not be defined
by encounters with street children, Gypsy's, or Dracula. While all three
may very well exist, none of them accurately defines modern day Romania. |

Lost
Valley Of Panama ~ Agua
de Salud ~ by Matthew Atlee -The house we normally stay on in Isla
Grande had been sold and so I decided we needed another place to go for
Carnival. Our good friend Ron Keith sold his house on Isla Grande. Ron
is from Nashville and is a very well known photographer who worked with
Rolling Stone Magazine in the early and mid-80s; he also shot album covers
for artists like Ray Charles and Crystal Gale. He was nominated for a Grammy
in the 90’s for album design. Ron came to Panama in or around 1974 with
the U.S. Army; he was an MP and during his stay in Panama, traveled around
the country during his off-duty time. He spent much of his time with the
Kuna Indians.
Beautiful
Downtown...Islamabad?! ~
Pakistan
~ By Brandy Bauer - Most people’s immediate association with Pakistan is
one of fundamentalism, and the front-line in the war against Al Qaeda.
And while there are some border areas (as well as the tightly controlled
Azad Jammu and Kashmir provinced in the north) which may be considered
no-go zones, much of the rest of the country is characterized by safe and
easy access. This includes Islamabad, a city so different from elsewhere
in Pakistan that the country’s inhabitants like to say their capital “is
35 km away from the rest of Pakistan.”
The
Bermuda Expat’s Survival Guide: Top
Ten Things To Know Before You Sign That Contract A Canadian In Bermuda
~ by Robert Hof - Last month, I wrote about how to remove one’s self legally
from the Canadian tax system. Why did I do this? Well, late in 2003 I took
the plunge and accepted an IT position in Bermuda. It has been a year of
trials, tribulations, and great fun. I have made some great friends, lived
a great lifestyle, and saved some money. If I had to make the choice again,
I wouldn’t hesitate!
Life
In A Dominican Beach Town ~ An
American In The Dominican Republic ~ by Elizabeth Roebling - At
6 in the morning, I take my steaming cup of strong Dominican café
con leche out to the porch and survey the sea. I have another hour and
half before the local commuter traffic, on scooters, quads, pick-ups and
buses, starts the parade on the paved beach road in front of the house.
It is a wonderful quiet time, as I watch the sea. My awesome appreciation
for it is only matched by my daily amazement at the number of times that
the mosquitos have bitten me during the night. They are a different sort
than in the States, quietier, more laid back, dancing the bachante rather
than dive bombing and singing rather sweetly. It is hard to begrudge them
a few drops of blood.
Living
Abroad On Bush Dollars ~ Sinking
Dollar ~ By Bonnie Burns - Unprecedented numbers of Americans are contemplating
moving abroad since the November 2004 Presidential election. People whose
ancestors risked everything to migrate to America a couple generations
ago are seriously considering abandoning US soil. Reverse migration by
those considered fortunate to live in ‘the land of the free’ is almost
inconceivable. Yet, inquiries from the USA to foreign residency websites
and the very website you are now reading have increased substantially.
Sadly, the bleak reality many Americans who are thinking of leaving will
face is they lack the freedom to choose where to live their lives. The
reason is the Bush dollar.

Reflections
On An Expatriate Life ~ Escaping
To Asia ~ by Bruce E. Pohlmann - My wife asks where I would like to
drink my coffee. I take it on the veranda of our new house on the island
of Sumbawa in eastern Indonesia. Feathery clouds float in an azure sky;
a soothing westerly breeze ruffles the palm leaves in the front yard. It’s
another day in paradise.
Chapter
7 - New Zealand ~ So
What's The Big Deal ~ by Rick Adams - A lot of people in the United
States write to me asking about the differences between living in New Zealand
and say, New York. For one thing, there are four times as many people living
in the city of New York as in the entire country of New Zealand! That makes
downtown anywhere here much less crowded than most street corners there.
Teaching
English In Chile ~ English
As A Second Language ~ by Emily Tell - Without a doubt English is the
international language. Although other languages such as French,
Spanish, and even Chinese represent a large population and may be diplomatic
in nature, business and diplomacy are carried out in English.
Some
Thoughts On Africa And Latin America ~ Speaking
From Experience ~ by Jurgen Klemann.-
It started to dawn on me about five years ago in Auckland that I wanted
to get out of business and law. At around that time it also dawned on me
that I wanted to get into college teaching in the less developed world.
There was initially no doubt for me where I wanted to do this sort of thing.
I wanted to bless students in South Africa with my enormous insight and
wisdom gained over the years and in various continents. My humble self
unfortunately couldn’t manage to land a teaching position at a university
there.
Winter
In Canada ~ Survival
~
by Thelma O’ Connor - Some parts of Canada don't get much snow and ice
in winter but many Canadians battle tough weather conditions and slippery
roads for almost six months each year. The ‘white stuff‘ generally starts
to arrive in late October and can often stay around until March or later.
Although winter weather can be harsh, we are fortunate that the truly ‘deep
freeze’ cold snaps tend not to last more than a few weeks at a time and
in many parts of Canada the sun shines all winter long, which is a great
lift for the spirit.
Risky
Business ~ A
Story Phuket, Thailand ~ by Steve Rosse - Saul retired to Phuket from
New York City in 1991. At the age of 40 he already had under his belt a
Master's Degree in Business Administration from New York University, three
years of therapy with a strict Freudian psychiatrist, an amicable divorce
from his wife Amy and a small fortune from the sale of his father's business.

The
Ugly American ~ American
Apathy ~ by Peter O’Dowd - American apathy for foreign culture began
six hundred years ago when the first “Americans” infiltrated tribes of
indigenous people in New England. I can almost hear the voices of those
pioneering pilgrims lamenting the inefficiency of the bow and arrow while
slaughtering helpless natives with high-powered musketry. These sad stereotypes
are proof enough for me that Americans have been cultural imperialists
since the moment they laid claim to the New World. Though the newest trend
of national snobbery is ultimately less violent, it’s certainly not more
acceptable. In a recent effort to remain hip and bi-continental, thousands
of juniors in college will play hooky from their home campuses to traipse
across Europe, photograph the Great Wall of China, or toss boomerangs Down
Under.

Profit Hunter ~ Why
Now’s The Time To Invest In Europe’s Forgotten Tax Haven ~ by Sven
Lorenz - While Liechtenstein retains a culture of
privacy, and bank secrecy laws remain on the books, it now has the same
know-your-customer rules in effect almost everywhere else in the world.
However, Liechtenstein still does not cooperate in foreign tax investigations.
Any foreign tax official inquiring about an account in Liechtenstein is
politely shown the door.
American
Escapee Uses Computer To Make A Living In Paradise ~ Living
In Costa Rica ~ by Rex Freeman - left the USA probably for many of
the same reasons most do; the erosion of rights, the lawlessness of the
courts, the intrusions of privacy, the omnipresence of big brother and
the general mental decay of society. What once made America great,
is now gone, or at best is quickly disappearing and I’d had enough. It
was time to go.
How
To Buy Into One Of Europe’s Most Expensive Tax Havens ~ The
Back-door Route To Owning In Monaco ~ by Sven Lorenz - Thanks to a
glamorous casino and a personal income tax rate of 0%, Monaco has become
one of the world’s most expensive property markets. Apartments in prime
locations cost $1,869 to $2,243 per square foot, and even at these prices
supply is scarce. But even if you have only a few thousand dollars to invest,
there is a way to claim a stake in this thriving city-state, to invest
in its real estate marketat prices last seen decades ago.

Rio
In The Rain ~ In
Brazil ~ by Elienne M. W. Lawson - Rio de Janeiro, long before it was
Rio de Janeiro, first saw a tourist in the form of Amerigo Vespucci in
1502. After much letter writing between Vespucci and his patrons,
the great Medici family of Florence, Rio was already a legend in European
literature and folklore. It certainly did not take any considerable time
for it to gain a reputation that has lasted to this day: a tropical oasis
with beautiful beaches, gorgeous women and hedonistic fashion.
One
Day In Albania ~ Europe's
Unknown Country ~ by Richard Robinson - The deck
of the Antonios K rattled and shook beneath my feet as the dark land mass
loomed larger through a summer sea haze. Against a bluish mountain backdrop
the outlines of buildings sharpened slowly as we drew nearer Europe’s most
mysterious country. For long Albania had been a totalitarian state and,
before that, the fiefdom of the shadowy King Zog. Few would choose it for
a sun-and-fun holiday, but things are slowly changing.
Trials
And Treasures In Patagonia ~ Adventures
In The South Of Chile ~ by Kyle Hammons - Rivers in Patagonia run wild.
Few bridges cross the glacier-fed streams and our group was having difficulty
locating a safe crossing spot. The Nadis River had only grown deeper and
wider as our expedition journeyed further into the secluded valley in southern
Chile. Now twenty people were faced with the daunting task of crossing
a rapid-moving river. Numerous attempts were made the previous day, but
all scouting parties were forced back by impassable waters.
Orinoco
River ~ In
The South Of Venezuela ~ by John Spampinato - It’s sarcastically referred
to as a ‘milk run’, a throwback to the days when dairy products were delivered
door to door, requiring the milkman to make uncountable stops. Only in
our case it was on a somewhat grander scale, starting in LA with stopovers
in Mexico - where the plane got a flat tire; Guatemala - where our first
landing attempt was aborted a disconcerting fifty feet shy of touching
down, and on to Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia and
at long last, Venezuela, by which time we had pretty much joined the ranks
of the living dead and had probably logged more take offs and landings
than the Blue Angels.
Budget
Baja ~ Busing
To Three Walking Towns ~ by Dorothy Aksamit - Baja by bus? Everyone,
Snowbirds, Mexicans and Americans, were shocked that we were touring central
Baja by bus. To Susan and me it seemed the only thing to do. We wanted
to flee to a hassle-free Mexico where towns were small enough for us to
wander unhindered by time-share pitches, wet T-shirt contests and strolling
cameramen with photogenic iguanas. In hotels we wanted not bare bones,
but casual comfort with an eye on the budget.
China
~ My
Other World ~ by Sam Meiguoren - What if there was another distant
planet in another galaxy that had humans just like us. What if they came
into being the same time we did. Would there technologically have evolved
the same as ours? Would they live the same way we do? Would they comunicate
in the same way? Maybe they would never have invented the automobile or
the light bulb. Maybe they would have found a different way to travel or
to light their world in the dark. It would seem that nothing could be exactly
the same from one world to another but how then would it be different?
I've never thought about these questions until after I visited China for
the first time.
Jaipur:
A Land Of Color, Culture And Bonhomie ~ Travel
To India ~ by Manju Dubey - When I was a child India was nothing but
a land of fairy tales, of Kings & Queens, palaces and intrigues. Well
often times when you travel across India you tend to come across remnants
of diversity in culture. But once you move across from Delhi towards Rajasthan
you can see the majesty of the Rajas who ruled this desert kingdom. Rajasthan
- the first thought that comes to mind is the splash of color and vivacity
of the people who live there. Can you ever begin to imagine a desert, which
is alive? I could not … until my nieces came over to India to visit us.
Traveling
To Constantinople ~ A
Greek Tourist’s Impressions Visiting Istanbul ~ by Marialena Lioulia
- t was Wednesday December the 15th, 2004, when my friend Yiota called
me up in the office. “What are you doing for New Year’s Eve?” she asked,
me and my mind just thought about another social engagement for the Season.
“Nothing much” I replied, since my boyfriend had just left to spend the
Holidays with his family in the States, I was telling myself that no matter
what, I would go with the flow and confront the usual Holiday blues with
a sense of positivism… “Well, how about us going to Constantinople”, Yiota
said, with hesitation coloring her voice. “Constantinople ??? When are
we going, dear?”, I said, with a sense of excitement in my voice now. “Well,
from December the 28th till January the 2nd…” “OK, let’s do it! I have
a Holiday leave during those exact same days, so it’s a deal!!!”
The
Other Franz Ferdinand ~ Experiences
In Bensov And Konopiste Castle ~ by Matthew Gregory - When I visited
the small Central Bohemian city of Benesov (the 's' makes a 'sh' sound),
and the adjoining Konopiste Castle for the first time, it was my first
trip outside of Prague. On the journey there I noticed that the clouds
hung low in the sky and merged with the tops of the hills that dominate
Central Bohemia's landscape, which gave the countryside a gloomy, eery
feel. Most of the leaves had left the trees so the landscape was very skeletal.
Running
Through Battlefields ~ On
Being The Son Of A Vet In Vietnam ~ by Peter O'Dowd - On the outdoor
veranda of our hotel, a 9 year-old Vietnamese girl wanted desperately to
unload her supply of Tiger Balm into our hands. She was playful and cute,
calling us diarrhea and then laughing girlishly into her balled up fists.
The slang she had picked up on the balconies of these hotels added flare
to her sales routine, but in the last week we had seen a hundred other
charming children trying to pawn their commodities. On this hot summer
evening near the Gulf of Tonkin, our beers provided all the entertainment
we needed.
Kuala
Lumpur’s Chinatown ~In
Malaysia ~ by David Lavoie - Nestled among the newer buidings
are many reminders of the ethnic distinctiveness of this vibrant part of
Kuala Lumpur. Buddhist temples resplendent in the red and yellow so loved
by Chinese people everywhere face trendy, very up-scale stores like “Peter
Hoe’s” where everything sold is subtle and elegant, not a trace of red
or yellow in sight. On the streets, traditional stands sell fried seafood,
spicy tofu, bean curd, fish garnished with chilis, and, of course, noodles
everywhere. At one stall Miriam, my wife, stopped to consider the purchase
of a (genuine, I swear) Rolex for only $20 US. At another I considered
the bright red t-shirts with a Canadian Tire logo reading "Cannabis Tire"
and featuring the familiar green five-leafed plant.
China:
A Nation In Motion: Traveling
Beijing, Wuxi, and Shanghai As A Tourist And Potential Investor ~ by
Vinnie Apicella - Ten days in China is not nearly enough time either as
a tourist or value investor. Bearing in mind the flight, which is nearly
a day long, or nearly two after whizzing by the International Date Line,
unless your point of departure is, say, Vancouver, you’re already behind
schedule before even touching down! Ideally, it is best to locate
a reputable tour agency that can escort you city by city to cover the necessary
highlights, then return again on your own to explore your preferred destination.
