Shark
Attack ~ Swimming
In Brazil ~ by Robin Sparks - Stefano, who once tooled around Miami
in a long yellow Cadillac, played professional tennis in France, frequented
the international party circuit between Uruguay, Marabella, and Paris,
and now hides out in Buzios from who knows who, is a victim of Argentina's
recent economic crisis. But he is also my angelfish. Stefano shows me where
the ATM machine is, he drops me off at the Casa de Paz Meditation Center
(and tells me I'll find him meditating on a bar stool), he introduces me
to his Argentine friends at a private party, and he changes my flat tire
three times!
An
Accountant In Argentina ~ An
Interview With Joel Graham ~ by Mark McMahon - We have military intelligence,
jumbo shrimp, and my pal Joel, an adventurous accountant. You may remember
him from my visits to Buenos Aires, (Living Large, Nov. 4, 2003 ). Joel
is a C.P.A. from California, who took his job with him 3,000 miles south
to Argentina. Having traveled to 87 countries, he has never let his desk
job prevent him from indulging in his passion. In this interview Joel talks
about how, and why, he made his dream a reality.
Japanese
Drinking Culture ~ A
Night On the Town With Japanese Businessmen ~ by Anna Miller - A few
weeks ago, I experienced something I had studied about in university and
heard much about during my stay in Japan - the company after-work party.
Of all the things that make Japan different from western countries, the
after-work party always seemed to me to be the one experience that would
not be open to me. Japan has a very strict corporate environment. Following
World War II, Japan`s push to rebuild its economy left no room for non-comformity.
Business men (and recently, businesswomen) habitually worked longer than
the western standard of 8 hours, sometimes staying over at the office when
they missed the last train home. |

Retire
In The Caribbean On $800 A Month? ~ Isla
Margarita ~ by Karl Ike - Do you know the average life span in the
United States is 76.9 years? That’s 28,068 days and I have already lived
21,900 of them, which means that I have only 6168 days left and I really
want to make the most of them. That is unless I get T-boned at an intersection
going to a job that I don’t like and get to work with a bunch of people
that I do not socialize with away from work, but I get to do the same thing
every weekend except for two weeks a year on my paid vacation. Then I get
to clean out the garage and sleep late. I really don’t think I will ever
see 76.9 cause if I don’t get T-boned going to work, a cancer will probably
rot a part of my body away.
Renovating
A Home In Mexico ~ Expats
In Mexico ~ by Sandy Caputo - So you think you’d like to own a home
in your newly adopted Mexico. You’ve overcome your fear of all those
horror stories of years past that the government could somehow reclaim
the property. You’ve found a city that meets all your climate, cultural,
cost-of-living and required services criteria. Now you’re faced with another
major decision: build or renovate?.

Brazil
Or Bust ~ Making
A Change ~ by Andy Neill - The story really starts back in 1999, when
I moved to San Diego, California to marry a lady I had met who lived there.
We both thought it would be forever. It wasn’t. Having already moved 2000
miles, at least, from family and friends, when the separation occurred
it was not too much of a stretch to think “outside the box”.
Tango-ing
Down Under ~ Tango
In New Zealand ~ by Candy Green - On the #28 bus from Christchurch
to my home in Lyttelton I sat next to an attractive “older woman.” Her
long white hair was piled up on her head. Her complexion was clear, her
eyes bright. Her figure was trim. She carried a back pack. She might
have been in her 60s, but she looked great. For some providential reason,
I’m sure, we ended up sitting next to each other.
A
Few More Reflections From Colima ~ Notes
From Mexico ~ by Jurgen Klemann - In the course of time the list of
my favourite restaurants in Colima has been gradually expanding. Because
I tend to be a little “fresa y chocante” (Spanish slang for arrogant and
difficult), to enjoy the privilege of joining that list these restaurants
must have something that makes them stand out of the crowd. The first restaurant
in Colima that fit the bill was "Los Naranjos Campestre”. The second restaurant
that made it onto my list was “Los Olivos”. The dining rooms in both restaurants
are surrounded by tropical plants and trees. Both restaurants manage to
create a relaxed ambience by having classical music – where it belongs
– in the background.
How
To Live And Work In Paris ~ One
American Shares The Secrets Of Navigating la vie Française ~
by Adrian Leeds - Thousands of Americans of all ages come here every year
in the hopes of a job, career, new friends -- in short, a new life. Paris
is very séduisant (seductive), so if you come here on vacation once
or twice, it's easy to get hooked. Beauty, culture, cuisine, language,
style, art, literature, history, romance, architecture...it's all here
for the asking, as long as you're willing to pay the price.

An
Amazon Christmas Story ~ In
The Colombian Amazon ~ by El Vagabundo - I stare out of the front of
the boat at an unbroken plain of green. This vast prairie of water lilies
is home to a myriad of birds with exotic names (tuci-tuci, garza, urututu,
tijerilla), spiders and dragonflies of varying colors and the occasional
caiman. Over the river and through the woods.
Feeding
The Ancestors ~ The
Cambodian Pchum Ben Festival ~ by Antonio Graceffo - The fifteenth
day, of the tenth month, of the Khmer calendar marks the Pchum Ben festival.
This is a time when the spirits of the dead ancestors walk the Earth. And
the living can ease their suffering by offering them food to eat. At four
in the morning, nearly all of the residents of Phnom Penh gather at the
temple with offerings of rice, which they toss on the ground, feeding the
dead ancestors.
New
Zealand ~ Some
Not-So Important Answers To Some Important Questions! ~ by Rick Adams
- Happy New Year! There are no poisonous snakes or Wal-Marts in New Zealand.
To some people that may be a redundant sentence (and when I say “some people”
I mean my wife Sandy and I). But as far as we’re concerned those
are two great reasons to move here. That also answers two of the thoughtful
and important questions that I have received about becoming expatriates
living in New Zealand.
Good
Medical Tips When Living Abroad ~ Staying
Healthy ~ by Jon Steele - The reality is no matter how healthy you
are, you will end up seeing some type of doctor for something. Now generally
speaking this is no big deal but if you happen to live in another country,
and if by chance it's a country with another language that's not English
then this could very easily become a big deal. I will give you some easy
tips that should make any hospital or doctors visit go smoothly. Although,
I can't fix your ailment, I can show you how to organize yourself to make
the necessary medical visit, almost pain free. Sorry, I couldn't resist
that one.
The
Edge Of Town Brazil ~ A
Fronteira da Cidade ~ by Shane Jackson - Now on line here at Montreal...we
are probably the only people with internet in the bairro. I think
I have found highway free access to the local big ridge, I'm guessing it's
at least 4000’ with knobs higher. The new bike cost $80 but is a piece
of junk, the inner tubes are lumpy and that causes a rub in the rear, maybe
a new tube will fix it...wish I had the bike I bought in China. The bags
finally caught up with me after the TSA gave them the once over, strange
times up there.

A
Little More On Living In San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina ~ Escaping
To Patagonia ~ by Douglas Harris - What is the square area of
Paradise? In so many of the world’s beauty spots there is an annoying city
or freeway that degrades the view. There are a few still pristine places,
but the crush of people is so heavy, you are always surrounded. There is
noise. There is car exhaust. There is...Patagonia to escape to. San Carlos
de Bariloche is perched above the lovely Nahuel Huapi Lake with brazos(arms)
stretching off as far as the imagination can wander. El Bolson a couple
of hours south doesn’t have the downtown lake but just turn to the west
and the massive wall of rock rises thousands of feet above you.
Low
Cost Recording In Mexico ~ Recording
Grooves South Of The Border ~ by Mexicojerry - At a recent gathering
of friends, it came up that there are so many aspiring “wanna be” artists
who always wanted to be recorded but could not afford the costs of today’s
stateside recording studios. I spoke to some members of a touring
show that graced our small village here in Ajijic, Mexico, who related
to me, just how expensive it is in the States to get recorded. Later at
another party it came up again, but this time it was mentioned that there
was a recording studio somewhere in our area. I set out to find it and
find it I did. I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.
10
Years On Margarita Island, Venezuela ~ Making
A Business And Living In The Caribbean ~ by Peter van der Hoek - After
living some ten years on Margarita Island I can truly give an honest opinion
about life here. First of all let me tell you that life on an island, especially
a tropical one, is incomparable to life anywhere else! The daily routine
is slow paced no matter how important the stuff you have to do. There is
after all, always tomorrow. Because of the always shining sun people are
chronically in a good mood and laid back. Everybody’s willing to help you
with about everything as long as you aren’t in a hurry to do so.
Uzbekistan
~ Independence
Day ~ by Hafez Ismail - Independence Day. No, not the familiar July
4. This was the day that Uzbekistan became independent from the Soviet
Union. I was looking forward to this day for a while, to see the tanks
and planes on display for the public to see, a manifestation of the power
of the state. Yet, as fate would have it, I was on a bus headed for Tashkent.
Dining
Out In Rome ~ Discovering
Rome's Restaurants ~ by Mauri Artz - This is not your typical guide
to dining in Rome. Two years ago, my family and I spent a year living in
Rome’s historical center. Prior to living in Rome, we had visited there
several times. We often followed the restaurant recommendations of travel
books, magazines, and hotel concierge desks. Some of our eating experiences
were wonderful, albeit expensive. Other recommendations weren’t so spectacular.

The
Slovak Tiger ~ Buy
a Castle for Three Cents…Live Well for US$1,500/month ~ by Mark Nestmann
- Like buying gold at US$35/ounce before it soared
in the 1970s…getting in on the Microsoft IPO at US$21/share (and picking
up a cool 27,800% profit after all splits)…or investing in property in
Miami Beach in the 1980s when you could pick up a beachfront condo for
US$30,000? (You can’t touch one much bigger than a closet for under US$300,000
today.) Of course, that’s the trouble with those opportunities. They only
seem obvious in hindsight, while it takes a special kind of foresight to
recognize them.

Notes
From The Egyptian Desert ~ Adventure
In The Desert ~ by David Lavoie - About two hours out of Cairo
on the road to Bahariya Oasis, we turn east into the desert. At first it’s
what is called “black desert”. Billions of tiny pebbles and ancient shells
have worked their way to the surface and cover the sand in a dark blanket.
This is treacherous to drive on and our two Bedouin guides, Mohamed and
Salah, prefer sand runs which are solider and more dependable. It’s a fast
exciting bumpy ride until we come to the edge of the escarpment. The first
level of the valley floor is about 100 meters below us; the drivers skirt
the edge of the drop coming heart-stopping close to the edge at times,
and driving over slopes that tilt the Toyota Land-Cruisers at scary angles
toward the drop.
Cancun
~ The
Daylife ~ by Dawnelle Salant - Cancun has a certain
reputation for being a manufactured part of Mexico where tourists do nothing
more than lie on the white sand beaches all day and hop from one glamorous
club to the next at night. This is, for the most part, an accurate picture
of the city itself. But what many tourists don’t know is that the area
surrounding Mexico’s jewel of the Caribbean is chock full of nature, history,
breathtaking scenery and adventure filled day trips that will surprise
and delight travelers of all ages.
Via
Francigena ~ Trekking
The Pathway To Paradise ~ by Brandon Wilson - In the entire
world, reportedly, there were three roads to Paradise in early Christendom.
The first is the Camino de Santiago that meanders 500 miles across northern
Spain. This has been trekked by millions of faithful for centuries on their
way to pay homage to the remains of the apostle St. James in Santiago de
Compostela. Of course, the path from Rome, center of the Holy See, to Jerusalem
must appear in this sacred trinity. But in second position and gaining
in popularity is the Via Francigena (The Frankish Route). Only recently
has this important trail, whose origins date back at least as far as the
seventh century, received the recognition it so richly deserves.
Finnish
Lapland ~ In
The Artic Circle ~ by Richard Robinson - They
say that the Finns, equally comfortable in both Finnish and Swedish idioms,
tend to employ neither if they can help it. “Silent in two languages” is
how the playwright, Bertold Brecht, described them. He should know,
having spent some time here, but my brief sortie into the Arctic Circle
of Finnish Lapland revealed a rather more garrulous side to the Finnish
nature. Take Hannun Ajokhaat, for example.
Indonesia
~ Adventure
~ by John Spampinato - Almost everyone in economy class looked out their
window trying, I’m sure, to envision the infamous assault from the perpetrator’s
point of view. We did too. Things looked pretty quiet down there now. And
then, while pondering this contrast, we suddenly hit the mother of all
air pockets and for a few heart-stopping moments it felt exactly like it
must have to Yamamoto’s raiders fifty years ago to the hour.
Nicaragua
~ Exploring
The Undiscovered ~ by Vinnie Apicella - “Nicaragua? Why Nicaragua?”
The question’s been asked over and over by everyone I’ve come in contact
with since I returned from vacationing and investigating investment opportunities
at a new development called Rancho Santana in this economically down-trodden
Central American country. A year earlier, I’d have asked myself the same
question. Now, my response would read something like this: “Because I see
a good opportunity there, and a country abundant with untapped natural
resources and beautiful coastline that’s been compared to the likes of
California in its infancy or more recently, an up and coming Costa Rica.”
Europe’s
Next Big Bargain Holiday Destination ~ “You
Can’t Spend Money Here No Matter How Hard You Try” ~ by Steenie Harvey
- With its history of hard-core Eastern Bloc communism, Bulgaria may sound
an unlikely vacation spot. But with soaring prices in Europe’s traditional
sunshine resorts, the country’s Black Sea Riviera has become this year’s
destination of desire. For the sun-starved and cost-conscious, it’s far
cheaper to vacation here than Spain.
A
Child’s Tale ~ In
Peru ~ by Kyle Hammons - Shorty usually staked a claim on the street
in front of an Italian restaurant and market. As we neared, he would emerge
from the shadows shuffling towards us with chocolate in hand calling out,
"amigos, amigos!" We were easy money for Shorty. We always emptied
our pockets for him and rarely asked for chocolate in return. Our change
barely seemed sufficient compared to the joy that Shorty brought us with
each encounter.
Mustique:
The Caribbean's Best Kept Secret ~ A
Private Hideaway In The Caribbean ~ by Heather Prince - Gazing out
the twin propeller plane window the jagged emerald island seemed to float
in the tri-colored turquoise Caribbean waters. This is the first site of
the illustrious private island of Mustique: The upper crust’s best kept
secret. Tommy Hilfiger, Mick Jagger , Princess Margaret and Viscount David
Linley, just to name a few, all have enjoyed the splendor of the small
1,400 acre island located in the Caribbean Grenadines. Luckily for me,
this was the location of my best friend’s wedding, so I became one of the
few who have been able to sneek-a-peek into the secret life of the rich
and famous.
A
Journey In The Gold Coast ~In
Ghana ~ by Junfil N. Olarte - It was breezy late afternoon as I descended
– boarding EK 781 – in the fertile soil of Ghana, a country in Western
Africa. Indeed, it was my first visit to an entirely Black African nation
with hospitable people. The uniqueness of humidity caught my attention
next as we steered through traffic. Accompanied by my Ghanaian lawyer from
the airport going to the place I was to stay.
Travels
And Good Times In Portugal ~ First
Time In Iberia ~ by Matthew Atlee - There is a new direct flight from
Panama City to Madrid. The name of the airline is Air Madrid: the flights
leaves every Monday and Friday; the flight takes 10 hours and 20 minutes:
you fly up the Caribbean, over the Dominican Republic and then north past
Florida, when you are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean you turn east
and fly straight over Portugal and Spain. When the trip was planned I thought
we were just going to Spain and then realized we were also going to visit
Portugal, which I really wanted to see because I had heard that Lisbon
was a great city. It was!
